Young Women Value Posters

At the Ohio lesson

In December 1830 the Saints were commanded to move to Ohio(see D&C 37:3), and in January 1831 they were 

promised that they would be “endowed with power from on high” if they would obey (D&C 38:32).

Those who gathered in Ohio were greatly blessed. Continuous revelations led the Saints to deeper understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ. In addition, they received the blessings that came from building a temple and preaching the gospel. While the Church grew in numbers and spiritual strength in Ohio, severe opposition also increased against the Church and its leaders. 

The Prophet Joseph Smith lived in Kirtland from January 1831 to January 1838.

Explain that in January 1831, the Prophet Joseph Smith and his wife,Emma, as well as Sidney Rigdon and Edward Partridge, left New York for Ohio. Most of the New York Saints followed during the next five months.

The Law of the Church

Sir Isaac Newton is well known for his three laws of motion. The first law of motion, the law of inertia, states that objects at rest will remain at rest, and objects in motion will remain in motion, unless acted on by an outside force. Inertia, a resistance to change, depends on both mass and friction. In this activity you will observe the inertia of a penny at rest.
I found this activity online…they had to put the index card on the cup with a penny on top of the card. Then flip the 
card out having the penny fall into the cup. 
Using their scriptures and journals answer some questions about the Law of the Church (D&C 42)

D&C 38:32 and 88: 119 the promised to endow the saints with power from on high and gave them commandments.
I had a Kirkland Ohio Temple fact sheet for them to read and questions for them to answer
They were to then build a edible temple out of marshmallows, graham crackers and frosting

D&C 42: 6-7 the Lord gave them commandments about missionary work
Once the Kirtland Temple had been dedicated and the keys for the gathering of Israel had been restored, members of the 

Church began to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in more places.

Using their scriptures: Map 3 in the Church History Maps section (“The New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio Area of the USA”).
 they found that:
Kirtland was an ideal location to begin to send missionaries throughout the world. Kirtland was near several main routes of transportation in the United States. From Kirtland, missionaries only had to travel short distances to access steamboats on

America’s major rivers and Lake Erie. They also had access to a national road system to the south and a canal system to the north. Because of this,Kirtland was the point of departure for missions to Canada, other parts of the United States, and Great Britain.

Because of missionary work during this time, the membership of the Church throughout the world increased by thousands.In 1837, 
Elders Heber C. Kimball and Orson Hyde were called along with five others on a mission to Great Britain, where they baptized around 2,000 people. By 1838, when the Saints left Kirtland because of persecution, there were about 2,000 members of the Church living in
Kirtland and nearly 18,000 worldwide

Joseph Smith arrived in Ohio, the Lord told him that he would “receive revelation upon revelation” if he would ask God.

-Turn to the chronological order of contents of the Doctrine and Covenants (located after the introduction).

Determine the location where most of the revelations recorded in the Doctrine and Covenants were received. 

Locate D&C 76; 89; 107; 137. Read the section introduction and skim the section summary located before the first verse.

In your journal write why each of these sections is significant.

 I brought in my son’s mission calls and passed them around. Most of them in the class had never seen one before. They loved looking through them.

I made small suitcases and gave one to each of them…caution, the girls LOVED them, the boys not so much :)
They were to copy down in their suitcases what to pack and what to leave behind.

I asked the question, “What is a missionary supposed to pack?”

Then I asked “What should a missionary leave behind”
I was looking for “sin”
To help students understand why it is important for prospective missionaries to repent of their sins,  we read aloud the following statements by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

“In this battle between good and evil, you cannot play for the adversary whenever temptation comes along and then expect to suit up for the Savior at temple and mission time as if nothing has happened. … God will not be mocked. …

“… The Lord has drawn lines of worthiness for those called to labor with Him in this work. No missionary can be unrepentant of sexual transgression or profane language or pornographic indulgence and then expect to challenge others to repent of those very things! … The Spirit will not be with you, and the words will choke in your throat as you speak them. You cannot travel down what Lehi called ‘forbidden paths’ [1 Nephi 8:28] and expect to guide others to the ‘strait and narrow’ [2 Nephi 31:18] one—it can’t be done” (“We Are All Enlisted,” Ensign orLiahona, Nov. 2011, 45).

Elder Holland:

“Whoever you are and whatever you have done, you can be forgiven. Every one of you … can leave behind any transgression with which you may struggle. It is the miracle of forgiveness; it is the miracle of the Atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ. But you cannot do it without an active commitment to the gospel, and you cannot do it without repentance where it is needed. I am asking you … to be active and be clean. If required, I am asking you to get active and get clean” (“We Are All Enlisted,” 45).

As people all over the world make New Years Resolutions, you might want to make some with your Primary.   Make and draw strips with the following resolutions and/or others you might think of.  As the children draw a strip from the hat, read the resolution and see if they can think of one or more songs that relate.  My suggestions are written below.  At the end of Singing Time, ask the children to choose two or three of these resolutions to adopt as a group for 2015.

Missionary Family Feud Questions and Responses

Responses needed – I want to play family feud to cover a couple of subjects and encourage discussion for section 68. If all who can would comment on 3 questions, we can all use survey results. Question #1 – what worries you most about serving a mission? Question #2 What makes you the most nervous about sharing the gospel? Question #3 What are the 3 most important things you can teach your children? #dandc68#
1. That I don’t know enough about the gospel. 2. That my friends will be offended. 3. To love, to serve The Lord and obey the commandments, to work hard.
1. Knocking on doors 2. Rejection 3. Trust the Lord and His prophets

Answers from my teenagers 1. Not picking up on language, Criticism from others, being rejected, blisters :) 2. people will think i’m weird, criticsm, won’t know how to answer their questions 3. Atonement is real, kindness/respect, that Heavenly Father really is there
From my 19 year old daughter who is about to submit her papers: 1) Being able to actually teach a lesson and finding the strength to do everything for 18 months straight without breaks 2) I don’t want to cry in front of people, I talk to fast, and usually what I say doesn’t make sense
3) know how to listen to the spirit to know right how wrong, how to stand up for yourself, and how to not judge others
#1 strange Food, #2 how they receive it, #3 charity, atonement, selfworth
Dave says 1) Getting yelled at 2) Damaging a relationship 3) follow Christ, be loving and kind to others, work hard

I just tallied up what’s here so I can use it tomorrow. I came up with: Top 10 answers for questions 1 & 2 are 1.Rejection, 2. not knowing what to say/ how to answer/explain clearly, 3. missing family & friends 4. Don’t know enough about gospel/scriptures 5.being laughed at/judged/yelled at. 6.lack of confidence, 7 offending others 8 learning a foreign language & culture 9 speaking – especially to those I don’t know 10- knocking on doors & getting kidnapped. I guess some of these could be combined, but it will work for my one question family feud for section 84.
