Blog post

This is the blog of Jenny Smith. I mostly blog about my calling in the LDS or Mormon Church.

Holocaust victim baptism

We put in the last 100 daffodil bulbs plus the 50 “blue” bulbs I ordered. I cleaned out three of the raised beds. The fourth is covered with junk and the middle one has strawberries in it that I want moved. I may wait until spring to transplant them, since that’s when I’ll be cutting back the roses that are also there. I got the grass cut. It looks a…

Gym Dandy

I went to the gym today, and weighed in like I planned. I wasn’t expecting to have lost anything yet, but I’m down 1.5 lbs to 136.5! That’s exactly where I want to be: 1-2 lbs/week. I lost even though I could only go to the gym 3x last week! On Tuesday I voted and hung out with the kids (who were out of school) and Thursday I went to…

400 bulbs and counting

Between the kids and I working yesterday, and Paige’s help on Wednesday, we’ve planted 400 daffodil bulbs! I can not wait until next spring to see how they look. I’ve planted some by the gate, on our side of the fence, and some in drifts by the road. the last 100 will probably go along the sidewalk or in large bunches by the front and back steps. I still have…

Politics of Survivor

I have decided that presidential elections are like that TV show Survivor. The best candidate never wins, because the other contestants attack them and beat them down early in the game. The worst candidates get ignored. So what you’re left with is the mediocre middling candidates without any major flaws: not _too_ good looking, not _too_ articulate, not _too_ conservative (too liberal isn’t a flaw, apparently), careful not to make…

Will we Miss the Mouse?

Good grief. I booked a great price on RT tickets to Orlando during the slowest week of the year on AirTran so our family could use up the rest of the un-expiring DisneyWorld tickets we bought back in 2005. So far our entire itinerary has changed 3 times (by the Automated System “that we don’t have any control over”). Today I called up and got them to move our flights…

“Dream” Relief Provided in Louisiana

“Dream” Relief Provided in Louisiana – More than 1,400 Mormons from six surrounding states converged on southern Louisiana September 27 to help Houma residents dig out from the aftermath of two September hurricanes. Hailing from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, they joined volunteers from the Realizing the Dream Foundation, the AFL-CIO, and local churches and groups. [News from around the Church] My brother, from the MS Jackson Stake,…

Terrified of Isaiah

I bought a copy of the Old Testament Institute Manual to help me with my study of the OT. It’s been really helpful! Sometimes the commentary is not terribly useful (like the section on is it appropriate for a prophet to use the phrase “piss against the wall” in the Bible–???), but most of the time it’s great. This morning I finished the introduction on Isaiah. The tone made me…

Trip to Shenandoah

We’re back from our now traditional trip to Shenandoah National Park to see the Autumn colors. It’s always so nice to be up there, especially for DS. While on our long hike, he said: “I love the narrow steep parts. I feel ALIVE, Daddy!” It’s good for him to understand there’s more to living than Legos and Line Rider. :) DD is always crazy about the animals. The first night…

Be Grease, Not Grit

I called the school office today — forgot to send in a note with the kids to say they were riding the car home instead of the bus. (I am usually very responsible that way, btw.) I called over an hour before school was to let out, and the office staff was all “we can’t guarantee….. field day….” blah, blah, blah. They should have said, “this is late notice, but…
