I felt terrible after this lesson today. I can honestly say that this is the first time I was glad to see the kids go. It really wasn’t a bad lesson, but I just could not get the kids to STOP TALKING. It was so rude and distracting. I actually had to have the worst offenders come up and sit by me like kindergartners. Horrible. I even cried after they…

Yesterday I backtracked and did 2 Samuel 7 and 9. I had accidentally swapped Bathsheba/David/Uriah thing with today’s reading when I spoke with the class about the reading, and so I went back to do this section of scripture. It turned out to be a really good lesson. In fact, it seemed to go so well I might do it this way again if I ever teach this material again….

Couldn’t sleep last night. I’m not sure if it was because I was anxious about this lesson (which I was) or the fact that my husband sleeps at about 2000 Fahrenheit, but either way, it was rough. I got up and went downstairs to do my lesson prep before the students got to class. I had already picked out the song (Choose the Right) beforehand, so that was easy. And…

Today I taught the beginnings of 2 Samuel. We started out class by having some of the kids who either didn’t have time or who didn’t follow the instructions complete their work on the scroll. Some of them forgot their names. Some didn’t write power phrases. One was absent, and I had two visitors, so they had to start from scratch. While those kids were working on the scroll, I…

I promised a friend that I’d blog about what I’m doing in Seminary for 1 Samuel, but I’ve been so busy….. Today I’m catching up, as usual. Report cards and catching up to 1 Samuel 16 This day I had a lot of material to cover because of getting back from the holiday after so many missed days. It was also report card day. Joy. I had the kids working…

Quarter Two has ended for us, and so I’m doing report cards. I hate them. I hate report cards, and I do them in the easiest way possible (with the exception of just making up a grade or giving everyone an A, which is probably what many teachers do, and maybe I should adopt it…..). I grade based on the reading percentage. This time I decided that I’ve been a…

I promised to write about this lesson some time ago, but hadn’t gotten around to it. The weekend before I taught this lesson was inservice meeting. For me, the actual lesson material is easy. I don’t have any trouble reading a passage and picking out something awesome to share or have the kids discuss. What I need is “techniques”. Now I know that you’re probably reading “gimmicks” here. I don’t…

This week is a weird one. The kids are off Wednesday and Thursday for exams. The other teacher is having a surgical procedure this week, too, and so his class isn’t meeting Friday, which means mine isn’t either. Next Monday is a school holiday (which I forgot). And yesterday, the federal government called a 2-hour delay because of ice, which meant the schools did as well, and so Seminary was…

This was an easy week of lessons. I think I mentioned earlier that I am treating this section in Judges and Ruth like a biographical examination of some of the heroes (and losers) found in these passages of scripture. I am hoping these kids will see characteristics they want to emulate and avoid by studying these stories from people’s lives. Judges 2-3 We started out by looking at the maps…

We had a regional inservice training the first weekend in January. In this area, Seminary and Institute teachers are invited to a Saturday training that lasts for several hours. This one went from 9 AM to 3 PM, and included lunch. Lunch was the best part :) Our meetings start off with a kind of a keynote address and then we get to choose courses from two sessions in the…

What a fantastic lesson we had in Seminary today! I’m not sure what happened to make things go so well, but wow, this was really a great lesson (from my point of view, anyway). Class started off very silly — like Monday silly — and we even got started a little late with our opening song. We started so late that I only had them sing one verse of Praise…
