Scripture Mastery Ideas-Part 1

Downloaded from: http://seminaryatsixam.blogspot.com/2013/09/scripture-mastery-ideas-part-1.html “To memorize a scripture is to forge a new friendship. It is like discovering a new individual who can help in time of need, give inspiration and comfort and a source of motivation for a needed change.”-Elder Richard G Scott-This quote by Elder Scott is one I use when teaching my students the importance of Scripture Mastery. Last year as an end of year gift, I printed this quote…

Downloaded from: http://brosimonsays.wordpress.com/2013/09/18/50-years-of-scripture-mastery-a-behind-the-scenes-look-at-the-new-scripture-mastery/ This article is a repost from si.lds.org, but since a lot of the people that follow this blog and may be interested in this topic will never see it there I have decided to repost it here. Enjoy! Scripture Mastery was first introduced to the seminary program in 1963 as “scriptures to be memorized or […]

1 Nephi 2-5, For Obedience Strive!

Downloaded from: http://brosimonsays.wordpress.com/2013/09/11/1-nephi-2-5-for-obedience-strive/ I began by asking the students what the Nike slogan was. “JUST DO IT!” of course was the response. I pointed out to those who hadn’t noticed yet that the Nike swooshes on the board created a face. I asked them, “Who do you think would be the ‘Just Do It!’ person in the Book […]

Moroni 10:4-5 Activity

Downloaded from: http://seminaryatsixam.blogspot.com/2013/09/moroni-104-5-activity.html Post-it notes are this teacher’s best friend. Every word, comma, semi-colon, period, and number is on a separate post-it note. I bought the 3×5 size at the dollar store over the summer so that large words would not be crowded on a square post-it. For smaller words and punctuation, I cut them in half.I place the Post-it notes with all over the wall in random order and they…

Downloaded from: http://brosimonsays.wordpress.com/2013/04/30/james-1-5-disciples-with-gusto-live-life-in-crescendo/ To understand more about how this lesson you will need to read the excerpts that I have included at the end of the post from Grant C. Anderson, “Living a Life in Crescendo” (Religious Educator 5, no. 2 (2004): 19–27). I have edited his talk to include those parts that I felt are relevant to the students […]

James 1-2, “Doers” Just Do!

Downloaded from: http://brosimonsays.wordpress.com/2013/04/30/james-1-2-doers-just-do/ This lesson goes really well this April’s Come Follow Me curriculum on the Restoration. We started off with some background on who James was (see Bible Dictionary, third entry under James and James, Epistle of) so that we could establish some “street cred” and determine the importance his writings may have. How does knowing that he was Christ’s brother (half-brother) […]

Hebrews 1-13, 7 Little Words And 1 Big God

Downloaded from: http://brosimonsays.wordpress.com/2013/04/28/hebrews-1-13-7-little-words-and-1-big-god/ I want to start out by giving credit to Back On The Floor Again for the idea for this lesson. I was able to do what I hope other’s do with my posts. That is, I was able to see what was done in their seminary class and tweak it to fit the needs of my students. I […]

2 Timothy 1-4, Perilous Problems And Scripture Solutions

Downloaded from: http://brosimonsays.wordpress.com/2013/04/22/2-timothy-1-4-perilous-problems-and-scripture-solutions/ In small groups, students began by creating a list of common sins in our society. We listed a few on the board and compared our list to Paul’s list in 2 Timothy 3:1-5. Just as President Packer illustrated in a talk he gave, we were able to see that Paul’s list is a perfect “checklist” […]
