Sharing Time Ideas From the 2015 Outline

ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING: Before sharing time, place a picture of Jesus Christ on the board and cover the picture with pictures of the following prophets: Isaiah, John the Baptist, Nephi, and Joseph Smith. Assign one of the following scriptures to each class: Isaiah 9:6; Mark 1:6–8; 2 Nephi 25:26; Doctrine and Covenants 76:20–24. Have the children read the scripture with their class and identify which prophet is testifying and what he testifies about Jesus Christ. Have one class point to the picture of the prophet they read about and share with the Primary what they learned. Take the picture of the prophet off the board. Repeat with the other three prophets. Point to the picture of Christ and tell the children that all prophets testify of Jesus Christ.

To introduce this topic, I thought that it might be kind of neat to have a man from the ward/branch come in and talk to the children. Have him come dressed as one of the prophets from the Old Testament, New Testament, or Book of Mormon.
This is what I was thinking of, but this is just an example:

Have your prophet come in at the beginning of Sharing Time.

Hi, I am King Benjamin (or any prophet you choose). I am a prophet from the Book of Mormon. Throughout history Heavenly Father has called courageous and honorable men to be His prophets. They are special witnesses of the Savior Jesus Christ. The prophets are called to testify of the Savior, to teach all of us that He died so that we might repent and return to live with our Father in Heaven. Prophets tell us of Christ’s great love for us. Many of the prophet’s testimonies are found in the scriptures. I too have a testimony of Jesus Christ. An angel of the Lord came to me, and told me many important things about our Savior. Have him read from the Book of Mormon, Mosiah 3:5-8.

After he has read from the Book of Mormon, have him testify of Jesus Christ.

After the prophet has talked to the children and testified of Christ you can talk to the children about the prophet and about Testifying of Christ. Explain to the children what ‘Testifying of Christ’ means, and why it is so important. Tell the children that today they are going to be learning about a few more prophets.

At the end of the Sharing Time, show the children a picture of President Monson. Our prophet today, President Thomas S. Monson, also testifies of Jesus Christ. He said, “He is the literal Savior of the World, the Son of God, the Prince of Peace, the Holy One of Israel, even the risen Lord. … As His witness I testify to you that He lives. (Ensign, May 1988, page 56.)

All prophets, whether they lived during Book of Mormon Times or they live today, testify of Jesus Christ. When we listen to the prophets, we can learn about our Savior, Jesus Christ, and gain a testimony for ourselves. Bear Testimony to the children.

{Sharing Time} Prophets Are Called by God

Sharing Time Idea from the 2015 Primary Outline

INTRODUCE THE DOCTRINE: Write each of the following words on separate strips of paper: Prophets, are, called, by, God. Give the strips of paper to five children. Arrange the children in front of the Primary so the words are out of order. Invite other children to arrange the words in the correct order. Repeat the sentence together.

ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING: Prepare clues about how Moses, Lehi, and Joseph Smith were called by God. For example, the clues about Moses could be: “I was called by God as He spoke to me from a burning bush”; “God called me to write the first five books of the Bible”; and “God called me to lead His people out of Egypt.” Choose three children to represent these prophets, and invite them to give the clues to the Primary. Invite the children to raise their hand when they think they know who the prophet is. Have the children say the answer together. After they have identified each prophet, read a scripture about that prophet (Moses: Exodus 3:4–5; Lehi: 1 Nephi 1:5–6; Joseph Smith: Joseph Smith—History 1:16–17). Point out that Moses was called by God, Lehi was called by God, and Joseph Smith was called by God. Tell the children that all prophets are called by God.

ENCOURAGE APPLICATION: Ask the children, “Who is our prophet today?” Show a picture of the current President of the Church. Explain that he was called by God. Have the children discuss in class groups how they can follow the current prophet. Invite a child from each class to come to the front and act out one thing they discussed in their group. Invite the other children to guess what the action is. Ask the child to share how following the prophet in this way will bless his or her life.

For this week’s Sharing Time I thought it would be fun to invite some men to Primary and play a ‘Who Am I’ game.

 

For this Sharing Time you will need to ask 3 men to dress up like one of the prophets listed in the outline (Moses, Lehi, Joseph Smith). Explain that they will be reading clues to the children about that particular prophet. The children will then be guessing who they are.

Other Items you will need:

-‘Prophet‘ typed or written onto a piece of paper, big enough for the children to see.

-‘Prophets are called by God.’ typed or written on a piece of paper, big enough for children to see.

-GAK Picture 107: Moses

-GAK Picture 300: Lehi

-GAK Picture 400: Joseph Smith

-A Picture of President Monson

To Begin: 

Post the ‘Prophet’ sign on the board and ask the children what the word says. Then ask, “What do you think of when you hear that word?”

Perhaps you think of a prophet from Old Testament times, wearing a long robe. Or a Book of Mormon prophet holding the Liahona. Perhaps your prophet is old, like Moses, or did you imagine a young boy prophet like Josiah? Maybe you thought of today’s prophet, who wears a suit and tie?

But it doesn’t matter what the prophets look like or how old they are, the most important thing is that the Prophets are called by God and they are called to be messengers for our Heavenly Father. {From The Friend}

Underneath the word Prophet, post the sign ‘Prophets are called by God.’

What does that mean, Prophets are called by God?

Who chooses the Prophets? Do we all vote? Does your Dad get to choose who he thinks should be the Prophet? NO! Prophets are called by God!

Throughout the History of the church, the Prophets have always been called by God.


Who Am I?

Today we have some visitors coming in to Primary. They are going to share some clues/information and you are going to have to guess who they are.

Are you ready to meet them?

Invite the men in one at a time or all at once…up to you.

You can also choose to post the pictures of each of the prophets on the chalkboard to help give the children a little hint or wait to show the picture until after they have guessed who it is.

Invite the first ‘helper’ up to the front and have him read his clues aloud (I have provided some clues below). Have the children listen to the clues and when they think they know who it is have them raise their hand.

 Another Way to Play:
{You could also post the pictures in different areas of the room and have the children go stand by the picture of who they think it is.}

After the prophet has been guessed correctly invite the next helper up and have him read his clues aloud. Continue until all clues have been read and each prophet has been guessed.

Clues:

Moses:

– I was called by God as He spoke to me from a burning bush.

– I led my people out of bondage in Egypt.

– The Lord revealed the Ten Commandments to me.

– Exodus 3: 4-5

Lehi:

– I warned the people in Jerusalem to repent or they would be destroyed.

– The Lord told me to take my family and flee into the wilderness.

– One night the Lord told me that we must continue our journey into the wilderness. The

   next morning I went to the door of my tent, and found the Liahona.

– 1 Nephi 2: 1-2

Joseph Smith

– I went to the woods and prayed to know which church I should join.

– Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appeared to me and told me to to join none of the churches that existed

   then.

– I was obedient to God and helped restore the true Church of Jesus Christ to the earth.

– Joseph Smith History 1:16-17

To close, tell the children that you have one more Prophet that they need to guess {President Monson}. Read the clues (below) aloud and have the children raise their hand when they know who it is.

Clues:

– This Prophet is the sixteenth prophet of our church.

– This Prophet was born in Salt Lake City, UT

– And this prophet was called by God to be our Prophet today.

Bear testimony that Prophets are called by God.

You could have President Monson’s picture on a bulletin/chalkboard. Cover the picture with a piece of paper and draw a big question mark on the front. Then reveal the picture after you have read the clues.

{Sharing Time} Forgiveness Brings Peace

Identify the doctrine(seeing an object lesson): Ask the children how they might feel if someone pushed or hit them. Hold up a big rock and tell the children that it represents those hurt feelings. Place the rock in a long sock. Invite a child to come to the front of the room, and tie the sock to his or her ankle. Ask the child to walk around. Discuss how hanging on to bad feelings will drag us down. Explain that when we forgive people who hurt us, we let those bad feelings go. Let the child untie the sock. Ask the children to say, “Forgiveness brings peace.”

Encourage understanding(hearing scripture stories): Several days in advance, ask leaders or teachers to be prepared to share one of the following scripture stories about forgiveness:

1. Jesus forgives on the cross (see Luke 23:13–34).

2. Nephi forgives his brothers (see 1 Nephi 7:6–21).

3. Joseph forgives his brothers (see Genesis 37; 41–45).

Divide the children into three groups. Send each group to a different part of the room (see “Stations,” TNGC, 179), where a leader or teacher will briefly discuss the scripture story he or she prepared to share. After each group has visited each station, sing the first verse of “Help Me, Dear Father” (CS, 99).

Today I am sharing a Thanksgiving themed idea, hope you don’t mind.

{Sharing Time} Forgiveness Brings Peace
For this sharing time idea you will be using my ‘Tom the Turkey’ printable.

First you will need to Print out a ‘Tom‘ (printable found HERE) and cut out some feathers. I just used some scrapbook paper and cut out some feathers.

On each of Tom’s feathers write one of the scripture stories from the scripture references given in the outline. If you have more than 3 feathers you could write down different scripture references that talk about forgiveness and/or scenarios that the children can answer what they would do in that situation:

“Your brother called you a name and it really hurt your feelings.”

“Your friend said that she didn’t like you anymore.”

Something like that.

I LOVE the ‘Identify the Doctrine’ activity found in the outline, so I would use that as your opening. After you have done the activity and discussed forgiveness…show the children ‘Tom’ and tell them that today Tom is going to help during Sharing Time.

Tell the children that on the back of Tom’s feathers are different scripture stories, scriptures, scenarios, etc. They are going to take turns ‘plucking’ a feather from Tom and discussing whatever is on the back of each feather.

A Different Way to Play:

Who Am I:For this idea you will need to come up with 3-4 clues for each scripture story. Have the clues written/typed on separate pieces of paper.

 The child that ‘plucks’ a feather will be giving the remaining primary children clues to get them to guess who the person is.

On the back of each feather have one of the names from the scripture stories in the outline (Nephi, Joseph, Jesus Christ). Have the child show you which name they picked and then have them read the clues one at a time. Have the children raise their hand when they think they know who the person is.

After the children have guessed correctly discuss the scripture story.

And that’s it! Two easy ideas for you to pick from for your Sharing Time this Sunday.

{Sharing Time} Successful Families Work Together

Sharing Time Ideas from the 2014 Outline

IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE(participating in an object lesson): Invite four children to come to the front of the room. Have each child hold the end of one piece of string while you hold the other ends of all four strings. Ask the children to work together to twist the strings into a rope. Point out that just as twisting the strings together made a strong rope, working together can make a strong family. Put each of the following words on separate word strips: Successful, families, work, together. Attach the word strips to the rope. Invite the children to read the sentence together.

ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING(role-playing): Show a picture of Noah, and briefly tell the story of how Noah built an ark and gathered animals to prepare for the flood (see Genesis 6–7; Moses 8). Divide the children into groups, and ask each group to role-play one way Noah’s family may have worked together (such as gathering wood for the ark, building the ark, and herding the animals). Invite the other children to guess what they are doing. Explain that Noah’s family was successful as they worked together.

ENCOURAGE APPLICATION(drawing pictures): Explain that just as Noah’s family worked together, it is important for us to work  together in our own families. Give each child a piece of paper and crayons, and invite them to draw pictures of their families  working together. Invite several children to share their pictures and explain how doing what they have drawn will help their families be successful.

Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

For this week’s Sharing Time I thought a great way to wrap it up would be to play a fun game of charades. You have discussed that working together can make families strong…you talked about Noah and his family…so I created a ‘Family Charades’ game for you to close with.

 {Sharing Time} Successful Families Work Together
On each of the charades cards are different ‘jobs’ that a family might have (i.e. Vacuum, Take out the Garbage, etc). I also included blank cards as well.

Split the Primary into teams or play as one team, you could even include the teachers for a children Vs. Teachers!

Invite a child up to the front and have them pick a card. Have the child read the card and then give them 30 seconds or 1 minute to act it out. Have the children try to guess what he/she is doing.

After the children have guessed what job it is, invite another child up to the front to pick another card.

Play until all cards have been picked or until time runs out.

Remind the children that as we work together as a family our family can be strong.

Encourage understanding(hearing and telling a story): Tell the story of Adam being the first man on the earth. Have a child read Genesis 2:18 as the children listen for what Heavenly Father said (“It is not good that the man should be alone”). Explain that He created Eve, who would marry Adam. Have a child read Genesis 3:20 as the children listen for what Adam called his wife (Eve). Next have a child read Genesis 1:28 as they listen for what Heavenly Father commanded Adam and Eve to do (“multiply,” or have a family). Explain that without Adam and Eve’s marriage, God’s plan for His children to come to earth would not have happened. Invite a few children to retell the story.

Retelling stories: When children retell a story they have just heard, they will remember it better.

Encourage application (seeing pictures): Explain that Heavenly Father’s commandment for a man and a woman to be married and have a family is just as important today as it was when Adam and Eve were on the earth. Show pictures of families and let the children point out the man, the woman, and the children.

At first I was having a hard time thinking of something for this week. But then I had an idea that I thought might be fun. I am excited to share my idea for this week, and think it will be alot of fun for the children. 

For this week’s Sharing Time I thought it would be fun to invite a few of the children’s parents to come in and share about how they met and their wedding day…but I’ve added a fun twist! Read below for 2 great ideas!

To Tell the Truth

Is the Wedding Story True?

Begin your Sharing Time telling the children about Adam & Eve and explain to them that marriage between a man & a woman is essential to God’s plan. Once you have discussed that explain to the children that today you have invited several couples to come in and share their very own story of their wedding day BUT some of the stories that they will hear might be FALSE! They are going to have to decide which couples are ‘Telling the Truth’.
First, you will need a table for a panel of ‘judges’ on one side of the Primary room. On the opposite side of the room have 2 chairs (for the lovely couple). Have 3-4 or as many couples as you would like.
If you really want to get into the whole game show theme you could make a ‘To Tell The Truth’ sign, a microphone, etc.

Begin by picking 4-5 judges (children) to come up and sit at the judge’s table. Explain that they are about to meet a wonderful couple that are going to come in and share their story of how they met and their wedding. Tell them they will need to listen carefully to their story because at the end you will be asking them whether the story was True or False.
Hand each ‘judge’ a True or False paddle (I have included a printable for this, below).

Invite the first couple in and have them share their story. Be sure to tell each couple to only share a 2-3 minute (or less) story.

After they are done and the children have guessed if it is true or false have the children sit down and invite some new judges up to the table and then invite the new couple in.

Once the judges have guessed you could have the couples share their testimony or why they feel that marriage between a man and woman is important to them.


Continue until all the couples have shared their stories or until time runs out.

Try to mix it up a little. Younger children might be surprised to hear that an older couple has only been married a few years or invite a family that wasn’t sealed in the temple until later or find someone with a very funny story of how they met.



Another Way to Play!

Here’s another idea that you could use also.


Begin your Sharing Time telling the children about Adam & Eve and explain to them that marriage between a man & a woman is essential to God’s plan. Once you have discussed that explain to the children that today you have invited several couples to come in and share their very own story of their wedding day BUT they will not be able to see them. Show the pictures to the children and explain that they are going to have to guess who is who.

Before Primary invite 4-5 couples to come in and share about their wedding day with the Primary. Have the adults bring a large picture of them on their wedding day.

Set-Up:
You will need a table for a panel of ‘judges’ on one side of the Primary room. You will also need one of those large rolling chalkboards or create a large divider that the adults can stand behind.
On the front of the chalkboard or on a bulletin board attach each of the pictures and label each one with a number (1-4 or depending on how many couples help). 

To Begin!

Invite 4 children up to the front to be your ‘judges’.

Explain that they are about to meet a wonderful couple that are going to come in and share their story of how they met and their wedding. Tell them they will need to listen carefully to their story because at the end you will be asking them who they think they are.
Hand each ‘judge’ a Number Paddle (I have included a printable for this, below).

 Invite the first couple to come in and share their story.  After they have finished ask the judges who they think the lovely couple is. Have the ‘judges’ look at the pictures and then pick the coordinating number on their paddle to guess.
Once all the judges have guess a number and have their paddles raised, have the couple ‘reveal’ themselves.
Have them share their testimony or why they feel that marriage between a man and woman is important to them.

To Create Your Paddles

To create your very own ‘True or False’ OR number paddles click on the link and download the file.
Then…print them out and cut each circle out. 
You can have a paddle for each circle (One True & One False) or create a front and back by gluing the backs of each circle together.

I added a popsicle stick to the bottom of my paddles so that they children could hold up their paddle. 
Grab your ‘True’ circle and glue or tape a popsicle stick to the bottom. Then on the back, using glue, glue around the edge. Grab your ‘False’ circle and place the back of the ‘False’ circle on top of the ‘True’ circle.
Let it dry and there you go…your very own True or False paddle!
