Life is a Journey- Not an Obstacle!

Object Lesson

This lesson is different than any ‘obstacle course’ object lesson, but it has a great point. Often times in life, we place obstacles in our way that really don’t need to be there. Such obstacles include our own weaknesses, sins, pride, grudges, drama, stress, envy- you name it! Other ‘obstacles’ might really not be obstacles at all, but we might choose to make them that way such as daily scripture study, going to church, following the commandments, ect…It’s all in our perspective. Sometimes we make life harder than it really needs to be, thus it’s important that we realize the “easiness of the way.” Just because we can’t see what lies ahead, does not mean we need to complain. Make life a journey- not an obstacle! Possible scriptures to go along with the lesson include: Alma 37:44-46 Story of Nephi’s family and how they ‘murmured’, yet Nephi was courageous- 1 Nephi 3 and 5, 2 Nephi 1 2 Nephi 25:4 (Words of Isaiah being plain unto those with the Spirit) Moroni 7 Ether 12 Set up an obstacle course using the string or yarn. Blind fold half of the group, while the other group acts as leaders through the obstacle course. Pair up each student so every student blindfolded has a leader, and tell them that they are to get through the course without touching the string. Then, once each pair is ready, cut the string so there is no obstacle course. Make sure the leaders are silent and ‘playing along’ with the lesson. You could even turn on some adventurous music so the blindfolded don’t get suspicious. Begin to have the leaders lead the blindfolded students through the ‘obstacle course.’ The point of this is to pretend that there is an obstacle course, when really there isn’t. The students blindfolded are very hesitant and careful to get through. Once they are at the end, take off the blindfold and show them that their isn’t an obstacle course at all!
