Brigham Young, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons) directed that a mint should be established, and in that mint, gold coins in $20, $10, $5, and $2.50 denominations were to be produced. The obverse abbreviation “G.S.L.C.P.G.” stands for “Great Salt Lake City Pure Gold”. Only a few of those gold coins are left, with $10.00 gold coins being the most prized, as only 46 were ever minted. A real $10 Mormon Gold Coin recently sold for over $700,000.00 USD.
