We lift our scriptures in Primary when we sing “Scripture Power”. Maybe it was stopped because the kids were dropping their scriptures and they are sacred books?

How sad that people are so uptight that they would discourage kids from lifting scriptures in the air as a simple gesture that can help them better understand the importance of the power of the scriptures in our lives.

I am in my ward primary presidency and have not heard anything from church headquarters on this matter. Our primary is still lifting scriptures:)

In order to understand the reasoning for this (or any) decision of this type — by that I mean non-doctrinal — all you need to do is ask up the food chain. You should follow the directive of leaders in your area, but you certainly can ask for more information on why a decision was made so that you can understand and follow it wholeheartedly, especially if you have concerns.

I agree with Jenny. Ask your primary president to check with your Bishop and/or Stake Primary President about this new policy. If it’s an official church directive, they can provide you with a written copy of it. If it’s not, then they can provide you with their reasons for making this decision. Most importantly, use this new policy as a teaching opportunity in your primary. Explain it to your primary children. Bear your testimony about following our church leaders. Finally, ask them to help you come up with an acceptable alternative motion if possible. I feel your primary children will still sing Scripture Power with enthusiasm if they understand the decision and have had some input about what they can do in place of lifting their scriptures.

We lift ours. I have been Primary Music Director for 3 years and I have not heard of not lifting the scriptures while we sing the song.

About 5 years ago a was in attendance at a general board meeting for stake leaders when then asked that we not raise our scriptures while singing scripture power. But this last spring I attended the spring general board meeting in SLC on temple square and the General Primary Board sang Scripture and Power and raised their scriptures high, letting us know that go ahead, get excited about reading the scriptures again. Every leadership has their own signatures. Have Fun!
