Hello-
I’ve been asked to teach a lesson on “when to call RS President”. I know it’s a common occurance; however, I know that having people ‘always’ calling the president can be disruptive to her life and that of her family. Several years ago, we had a president teach a lesson in our ward that was basically along the same lines and I was wondering if anyone knew of any talks about proper channels, or quotes, or what the exact protocal is…any and all help, suggestions, feelings, ideas would be appreciated.

LOL! As a Relief Society president myself, this question made me laugh! I’ve had phone calls for everything from “who sews in our ward” to “where can i find a Spanish class for my kids” to “I have some junk I want to give away” and phone numbers.
AFAIK, there is no “protocall” on when people should call a RS president. They call me because they hope I will be able to point them in the right direction. When I can’t, I say so, and let it go. When I can, I pass them to the next person — I don’t call the school district to check on Spanish classes for them.
If a president feels calls are becoming disruptive, she should bring it up with her priesthood leaders. They can give her direction or they may choose to state a local policy from the pulpit. This topic needs to be handled with care. You certainly don’t want people to feel uncomfortable calling a RS president with a need or concern. It’s important to remember, though, that people call the RS president because she is a non-threatening source of help or information and because they respect her office.
