Jenny,
I have researched the web, and I’m wondering if the church has copyrighted this saying. I’ve seen several sites that are distributing products with this slogan, and curious if someone wanted to make some stationary ect. who would you contact???
Do you also know if you can use any of the “Together Forever” slogans also??? or are these copyrighted too??
I see you sell rings ect, thought maybe you would know.
Thanks Cami

I don’t actually sell CTR Rings myself — I just link to other websites that do, so I’m no expert. I’d just call the Church Office Building to see if they can direct you to the right office.

The church is very clear that the “CTR” in the shield in the exact font as on the rings in the distribution center, is copyrighted and yet everyone makes them and uses it. As Jenny mentioned the Church has an Intellectual Property Rights/ Copyrights office and they can answer any questions you may have. Legal Department – ext. 6301
I have contacted them before and this is what they said:
“We have no objection to the use of the words, quotes, phrases and scripture references you have listed in your e-mail dated 16 July 2007 to be reproduced for commercial distribution with the exceptions listed below.
Beehive, Liahona, Laurel, Mia Maid, Choose the Right (may use English only, no other languages), CTR letters, Be statements, President Hinckley’s quotes, Standing for Something.
We request you do not make any references of the sources of your words, quotes, etc. (except scripture verses) or any endorsement by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the printing, packaging, or promotion of your product.”Please understand – that you should without a doubt contact them with your exact question and possibly an image – to be sure there is no miscommunication.
Hope that helps! – kerry (tkme63)

This is an interesting question, seeing that we have General Authories on record stating that they believe having “tangible reminder” like CTR rings, is a good thing for youth and adults. Many of the newer CTR rings do not use the (goofy) lettering found on the 10 cent rings, but some do. I expect the companies have permission to use it. I am only aware of two that do use the full on logo. I think that the implication that the Church disapproves of CTR rings is incorrect.
It’s possible the Intellectual Reserve Office doesn’t like it, however, and that’s a whole different beast. :)
In my experience, the Copyright Office is very active in protecting it’s copyright (which is why I expect Ringmasters and One Moment in Time have permission to use the CTR sheild with certain restrictions), but they are not very great about following up on questions. Their office is small, and they just don’t have time to follow up on all questions.
