Last week I downloaded the Kindle App for my iPhone and downloaded a couple of free classic books to read. I was trying to encourage my DS to expand his reading beyond these serial magic/dragon/elf/fantasy type books into some of the classics. I specifically wanted him to read Bob, Son of Battle, a “dog book” I liked better than White Fang. I recently listened to The Importance of Being Earnest…

Today I called Susan to ask her where she got the ribbons for a music festival because I was trying to get some custom ribbons made as awards for and upcoming ward activity. Somehow the conversation turned to various problems we were having. My temple recommend is only half-way signed. I went to the Bishop at the beginning of December to get it done, but with the snowfall and visitors…

Last year I printed out a planting calendar developed by Virginia Master Gardeners to know when I should plant stuff in out garden. I have been curious about succession planting and wondered if I could do it in out little garden plot. We have a garden that produces well even though it’s only about 12 x 15 feet. Last year I had Jared dig me out a hole about 18-24…

DS is now 11, and I find myself falling into bad habits as a mother. When I was a young mother, I prided myself on having obedient children. I read every reputable book on parenting I could choke down and applied what I thought was the best information. I remember the most helpful things I learned about were timeout, never ask a question to which the answer might be unacceptable,…

I’ve been down in the dumps, on top of a cold thing and coupled with being snowed in with no sun – it’s been a completely wasted week. I feel useless but I’m still unmotivated. The winter here has been unusually rough. We got snowed in with about 20 inches in December and again this weekend with 20+ inches falling in 24 hours. The kids went to school for a…

Well, it’s been forever since I blogged. Naturally. Lemme sum up what’s been going on: pulled off the ward Christmas party, got snowed in for 3 days in the biggest December snowfall on record in the DC area while Jared was stranded out of town, survived Christmas after my family decided to come up last minute, made it through the holiday rush on the new product orders (barely keeping ahead…

Elder Cannon has a tip on how to light up your tree like they do on Temple Square. Follow the link below, and then click on the “audio” tab: http://newsroom.lds.org/ldsnewsroom/eng/news-releases-stories/temple-squ… The Church is going more environmentally friendly on the lights with new LED bulbs.

I’ve been reading pages (and pages and pages) of histories that my parents are working. Momma is helping her mom write a history, and Daddy — a PROLIFIC writer — is finally compiling his thoughts and experiences. He’s barely out of college and is well over 157 pages. Today I read a segment Daddy wrote about the murder of the music teacher when I was in first grade. It reminded…

Sold well over 1000 Be Strong cards *today*. Whoa. I’m not sure what happened, but I am now down to just about 400 left. That means I’ve nearly sold out in just 4 days. Guess I better reorder — again — even though I said this was the last reorder. I hope these cards are going to be useful for leaders! I so hope they inspire kids to learn those…

It’s not about Big Love — it’s about TOUGH LOVE. Hehehehe. http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/popwrap/first_look_tlc_family_armor_PeN5BO… More Mormons on TV! We’re just quirky enough to be “reality” TV, but wholesome enough for Prime Time. Honestly, the show sounds boring to me. But so did Dirty Jobs, and that has turned out to be a gem. Mike Rowe is my boy. Wonder if he’s a Mormon??? :) Had a big party yesterday for our friends…

I was sitting in Church on Sunday listening to a great talk — seems like it was LaRene’s — and it occurred to me that a weak testimony could be founded on ideas and understanding of the relationship they have with God on His tender mercies, instead of the gospel plan. When we first moved in, I noticed that people in this ward seemed to talk about the “tender mercies”…
