I’m responsible for planning our Stake Family Temple day, scheduled for September 19th, 2009. We’ll be visiting the Washington DC temple. The stake primary (me) will be keeping the kids busy for four hours while parents attend the temple. I have a professional photographer (from my ward) coming to take family pictures in front of the temple. I would also like to take individual pictures of the Primary children in front of the temple. I’ve been trying to find some inexpensive, unfinished wood frames that the children could decorate. I’ve found some paper mache frames from Oriental Trading. Any suggestions on where else I should look? Or if there is an inexpensive frame already in existence that says “My Eternal Family” on it? We’re hoping for 100 kids, and I have about $3 per child, but that will have to cover snacks and other materials too.

What a fun idea! This sounds like it will be a great activity!

Dollar Tree routinely has wooden frames for $1.00 each you can use. I see you’re in VA like me, so you should have a Dollar Tree near you. They have a website you can use for bulk purchases, too, and that is http://www.dollartree.com/ . I have also seen very inexpensive unfinished frames at Michael’s Craft store, too.

If you go with a larger frame, say 5×7 or 8 x 10, you could have the children decorate the paper inside like a mat and they could put their own writing on it.

You are definitely not going to find a frame that already has “My Eternal Family” on it in your price range. I’d suggest that you have the words added to the picture itself, maybe with the date, too, when you print the pictures. Remember to include the cost of photo printing in your estimate, which could be as high as 30 cents for a 4 x 6. If you can do 2 pix per 4×6, you can cut that cost in half. Printing on your ink jet printer will end up costing far more than having them printed at Target or CVS or wherever: trust me.

When I visited a church with about 20 kids in England, they took the kids around the grounds to do a “scavenger hunt” looking for different religious iconography in the building. That might be something you could work into your schedule, but reverence and logistics (especially manpower) could be an issue.

I hope you’ll post information and pictures about what you decide to do! This sounds like a great activity!!!!

We give our children a framed picture of the Nauvoo Temple (that is our temple district) for their birthdays. We bought frames from Ikea for about 40 cents each. They are wooden and I wrote in calligraphy on the frame – My Eternal Family at the top and 2009 at the bottom.

We are also having a family day at the temple on Oct. 10th and I liked your idea of having the children’s photo taken in front of the temple. We are going to have someone speak to the children about the historic nature of the Nauvoo Temple. We are looking forward to the day and the children are very excited.

I know when we lived in VA I found unfinished and inexpensive frames at IKEA–the one up by Potomac Mills. Good luck with that.

I almost put IKEA down, too. I know who you are, Sister Gingerich, but you don’t know me — I live in Rock Hill. You left a legacy!

Hi Jenny–I know our paths haven’t crossed, but I have only heard wonderful things about you, too. We miss Rock HIll ward, it is such a wonderful ward. Thank you for all you do with your website and helping all of us that need some “creative” guidance. Maybe when I come back to VA for a visit, I’ll get to see you. Take care.
