"Praise to the Man" Review

I’ve created this game for Senior Primary to review verses one, three, and/or the chorus of “Praise to the Man.”  It is a good way to get the kids to sing the song many times and to pay attention to the lyrics without realizing that they’re working.

To prepare the game:
1.  Download the appropriate PDF at the bottom of the page. (I have a separate document for each verse and the chorus, in both US and A4 paper sizes).
2.  Print the first two pages
3.  Print the last two pages on the back of the first two.
4.  Cut out the strips.

Now you should have a puzzle with the picture on one side and the lyrics to the song on the other.  (If you can’t get the lyrics to line up, just write them in marker.)  Cut a piece of clear shelf paper, or press-and-seal plastic, big enough to cover the entire puzzle.  Remove the backing and attach it to the blackboard, sticky-side-out, with magnets or tape.   Attach the puzzle pieces, lyrics-side-out, to the blackboard with magnets or clear tape.
Tell the children that they need to learn the song so well that they can recite it inside-out, backward and forward.  They’re going to see if they can sing the song from the end to the beginning.  Take the strip that reads “the hero again.” and place it at the bottom of the piece of shelf paper.  Explain that this is the last line of the verse.
Ask them to sing the song with you and listen for the line that occurs just BEFORE this one.  Sing through the song and ask the children which word strip belongs just above the one that you’ve already posted.  Have them find the word-strip and carefully attach it to the shelf paper above the first.
Continue the game until all the word strips are on the page in the correct order.  When the lyrics are complete, remove the magnets holding up the shelf paper and turn it around, showing the children the picture side of the puzzle.
The completed puzzles will look like this:

Verse 1

Verse 3

Chorus

{Sharing Time} May Week 2

With 5 weeks this month, I hope some of you might be able to use this! I forgot to publish before I went off for the weekend.

Encourage understanding: Gather pictures of events from the Restoration of the Church. Divide the sentence “Joseph Smith is the prophet of the Restoration” into as many sections as you have pictures, and prepare a wordstrip for each word or phrase (see example). Divide the children into groups, and give each group one of the wordstrips, a picture, and a scripture reference that describes what is happening in the picture. Ask the children to read the scriptures and discuss what is happening in the picture. Then have each group share their story with the rest of the Primary. Discuss Joseph Smith’s role in each event, and have the children think about how the event has affected or can affect their lives. Place each picture and wordstrip on the board in order. After all of the wordstrips are on the board, read the sentence together.

When Jesus Christ was on the earth He taught His gospel. He taught faith, repentance, baptism by immersion, and the gift of the Holy Ghost. He gave His Apostles His authority, which is the priesthood of God. The Church of Jesus Christ was on the earth. After Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, His Apostles went forth to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, but many people rejected them. The Church of Jesus Christ and the priesthood were taken from the earth for hundreds of years. In 1820, young Joseph Smith was reading in James in the New Testament. He read, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God” (James 1:5). Joseph wanted to know which church to join. He decided to do what the scripture said. Joseph went to a grove of trees one spring morning and knelt in prayer to ask of God. As he was praying, a bright light descended. In that light stood two glorious heavenly beings: Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. Joseph asked Them which church he should join.
Jesus Christ told Joseph to join none of the churches. Three years later, Joseph was visited by the angel Moroni, who taught him about the Book of Mormon and showed him where the golden plates were buried. John the Baptist and the Apostles Peter, James, and John came to earth to ordain Joseph Smith to the priesthood of God. The priesthood was once again on the earth. The true Church was restored—or brought back—to the earth. We are blessed to have the restored Church on the earth. (source)

The outline idea is a perfect way to engage the Senior Primary. Maybe add some sticky darts to make it a touch more engaging and you’re good to go. You could also do a matching game or a matching halves. You can download all the GAK pictures here.

But for the younger kiddos, I found this fun “Seek and Find” of Joseph Smith in the Friend and I thought it would be perfect so I blew it up for all the kids to see and have created a b/w version for cheaper printing.
As the kids find each item you can talk about each and how it attributed to the restoration of the Church and how Joseph Smith played a part.

You’ll be searching for:

Gold plates (the word of the Lord)
Kirtland Temple (temple work)
Sacrament tray (remembering Jesus Christ)
 Missionary name tag (missionary work)
Baptismal font (covenanting with the Lord)
Keys (the priesthood)
Dove (the Holy Ghost)

Engineering Print (18×24)

{Sharing Time} Joseph Smith Translated the Book of Mormon by the Power of God.

Sharing Time Idea from the 2015 Sharing Time Outline
ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING: Write power of God on the board using a code (for example, you could replace each letter with a symbol). Ask if anyone can read the message. Write a key on the board that shows which letters the symbols replaced, and have the children work in groups to decode the message. (Remind the children not to call out the answer.) Read the phrase together. Read D&C 1:29.
Explain that Joseph Smith could not read the writing on the gold plates without the help of the Lord. Invite the children to share what they know about how Joseph Smith was able to translate the Book of Mormon. Invite several children to share how they feel about the Book of Mormon.

Sharing Time Idea from Little LDS Ideas
In my Sharing Time idea, I have a game idea that you can use for Jr. and/or Sr. Primary. It’s called ‘Search for the Gold Plates’. This is an activity I shared years ago, but would be great for this week’s Sharing Time.

First, to begin the Sharing Time I thought it would be fun to show ‘The Book of Mormon’ written in several different languages.

Then ask if anyone can read any of the writings. You could go over each one, telling them what language it is written in. Then ask them, ‘Wouldn’t it be hard to read something in a different language?’

‘You would have to know the language wouldn’t you?’

Tell them that when Joseph Smith received the plates, they were written in a very weird language. The language was Reformed Egyptian.

Here is an example of Reformed Egyptian that you could show to the children.
After you have discussed how hard it would be to translate…you will explain to the children that they will be searching for the Gold Plates.

What you will Need:
You’ll need to print out a picture of a stone/rock (Here’s the image I used). You’ll also need a few file folders or boxes.

Print out your rock {just find a picture online} and cut it out. Attach the rock to the front of the file folder. That’s easy enough, right?

Then, inside place a picture of the Gold Plates. You’ll only need one picture of the Gold Plates. Underneath the other rocks you could put silly pictures. I.E- Snakes, bugs, a shoe, etc.

Here is my picture using a box instead of a file folder. You’ll want to cover the box with brown or green paper. Then attach the picture to the top of the box. You could use any type of box.

Inside, place the Gold Plates. If you are feeling very craftsy, you could always make some gold plates.

I know at our church, in the library, we have some gold plates that someone made using wood. They’re really neat, the children loved them. And the same as above, you’ll only need one set of Gold Plates, you could put other things in the other boxes.

And that’s it!

I share several different ways you could play. Just click the link below to read the whole Sharing Time Idea and to print it out.

Thanks so much for stopping by. I hope you have a wonderful day & a great Sharing Time!

Voice of Wilford Woodruff on Wax Recording bearing testimony of Joseph Smith

D&C 28 Satan imitates

D&C 28 Satan imitates
President James E. Faust of the First Presidency cautioned us to avoid activities that may invite Satan’s influence into our lives:

“Satan is not an enlightening subject. I consider him to be the great imitator. …

“It is not good practice to become intrigued by Satan and his mysteries. No good can come from getting close to evil. Like playing with fire, it is too easy to get burned. … The only safe course is to keep well distanced from him and any of his wicked activities or nefarious practices. The mischief of devil worship, sorcery, witchcraft, voodooism, casting spells, black magic, and all other forms of demonism should always be avoided” (“The Forces That Will Save Us,” Ensign, Jan. 2007, 5).

In 1830, the Prophet Joseph Smith encountered a challenge because Church members did not understand the order of revelation in the Church. Hiram Page claimed to receive revelations for the Church through the medium of a special stone, and some Church members, including Oliver Cowdery, believed him. Shortly before a Church conference that was held on September 26, 1830, the Lord revealed truths that helped Oliver Cowdery and others understand the order of revelation in the Church.

D&C 3, 10 116 pages Lost

I did this years ago and thought it would be fun to do again.

I took a file folder and wrote in white crayon on the inside front cover. They had to dip a q-tip in colored water and rub over to reveal the Top Secret case they were to solve.

D&C 3, 10 116 pages Lost

Each of them received a Detective Badge…and put them on

D&C 3, 10 116 pages Lost

Then went off to a quiet place in the building

D&C 3, 10 116 pages Lost

Where they worked to solve the mystery

D&C 3, 10 116 pages Lost

“Best part”, once again, they were looking in the scriptures to find answers.  A great principal they will need to use throughout their lives

Some of the Questions were:

1.  The Plot- D&C 10: 9-18

1.   The Motive- D&C 10:19

W.Who are the suspects? D&C 3:9, 12-13; 10: 7-8, section heading
1.  Satan’s reasoning-D&C 10:20-29

1.  According to D&C 10: 44-46 what was on the small plates of Nephi that was of greater worth than what was lost on the 116 pages of manuscript?
