{Sharing Time} “If Ye Have Faith Ye Hope For Things Which Are Not Seen, Which Are True” (Alma 32:21)

Sharing Time Idea from 2014 Sharing Time Outline

IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE(memorizing a scripture): Write on the board “If ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.” Have the children read it aloud together several times, and then erase all but the first letter of each word. Ask the children to recite it again. Erase the letters one at a time until the children can repeat the scripture from memory.

ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING(hearing a scripture story): Ask the children to describe how they know when it is nighttime. Show a picture of Samuel the Lamanite and explain that he prophesied that on the night Jesus Christ would be born, the sun would go down but it would not get dark. Invite the children to retell the events from Helaman 16 and 3 Nephi 1:1–13 (you may want to ask a few children in advance to be prepared to share this story). Ask the children to recite the scripture they memorized, and ask them how the Nephite believers showed faith. Ask the children what they think happened to the believers. Invite a child to read 3 Nephi 1:15, 19. Testify of the importance of faith.

Sharing Time Idea from Little LDS Ideas

{Here is an idea I have shared before. Read through it and change it up to fit your needs. The beginning is a little long, but the activity would be a great one! Parts of this idea came from The Friend; Jan. 1999; Sharing Time: Faith in Jesus Christ }

{Sharing Time} “If Ye Have Faith Ye Hope For Things Which Are Not Seen, Which Are True” (Alma 32:21)

Idea

What does it mean to have faith? Alma says that “if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true” (Alma 32:21). We have faith when we believe and trust in something that is real and true even though we have not seen it for ourselves.

What does it mean to have faith in Jesus Christ? To have faith in Jesus Christ means that although we have not seen Him, we believe that He lives and loves us and that we trust Him. When we read the scriptures, we can learn about Him. When we listen to the prophets, we can understand what we can do to follow Him. When we pray in faith for help to choose the right, we can know that our prayers will be answered. When we listen to the whisperings of the Holy Ghost, we can feel Him close to us and know that He loves us.

Show the children some seeds. Ask the children if anyone knows what they are. Then ask them the 3 questions from the outline: “What can these seeds become?” “How do you know these seeds will grow?” “What must we do to make them grow?” Discuss the seeds and how they grow with the children. Then explain to the children that Faith is like a seed. You could ask the children how Faith is like a seed.

How does our faith in Jesus Christ grow? Alma tells us that the word of God is like a seed. We show our faith when we plant a seed in the earth. We then nurture it by keeping the weeds away, by giving it water and plant food, and by making sure that it has sunshine. If it is a good seed, it will begin to swell and grow.

When we believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ, we plant true words of God in our hearts. We nurture this kind of seed by praying, by listening to the prophets, by keeping the commandments, and by responding to the promptings of the Holy Ghost. As we do this, the seed of truth will grow within our hearts. Then we will know that Jesus Christ is happy with our efforts.

Alma says that if we continue to nourish the word of God by our faith, it will grow as large as a tree and bring forth fruit. This means that our faith in Jesus Christ will grow strong and bring blessings for us and for others. What joy that brings! We have faith in Jesus Christ when we believe Him, trust Him, obey Him, and follow Him.

Help the children memorize Alma 32:21: “If ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.”

After the children have memorized the scripture show a picture of Samuel the Lamanite and explain that he prophesied that on the night Jesus Christ would be born, the sun would go down but it would not get dark. Tell the story to the children and discuss it.

Activity

Assemble some gardening aids (small bag of fertilizer, trowel, watering can, picture of sun, etc.), and put them into a box or bag. Have children pick an item and tell one thing we can do to nurture the word of God by our faith in Jesus Christ (believe, keep the commandments, pray, etc.). Label each item with a word suggested by the child. Display pictures of trees in various stages. Help the children realize that this is an ongoing process.

**Another idea: you could attach pictures to each gardening tool for Jr. Primary and scripture references for Sr. Primary that talk about the different ways we can nurture/help our seed grow (Prayer, Scriptures, Baptism, etc.). Have the children tell you what the picture is and then discuss how that helps our seed to grow and have the older children find the scripture and read it and then tell you what it is.

{Sharing Time} Marriage between a man and a woman is essential to God’s plan.

Encourage understanding(hearing and telling a story): Tell the story of Adam being the first man on the earth. Have a child read Genesis 2:18 as the children listen for what Heavenly Father said (“It is not good that the man should be alone”). Explain that He created Eve, who would marry Adam. Have a child read Genesis 3:20 as the children listen for what Adam called his wife (Eve). Next have a child read Genesis 1:28 as they listen for what Heavenly Father commanded Adam and Eve to do (“multiply,” or have a family). Explain that without Adam and Eve’s marriage, God’s plan for His children to come to earth would not have happened. Invite a few children to retell the story.

Retelling stories: When children retell a story they have just heard, they will remember it better.

Encourage application (seeing pictures): Explain that Heavenly Father’s commandment for a man and a woman to be married and have a family is just as important today as it was when Adam and Eve were on the earth. Show pictures of families and let the children point out the man, the woman, and the children.

Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

At first I was having a hard time thinking of something for this week. But then I had an idea that I thought might be fun. I am excited to share my idea for this week, and think it will be alot of fun for the children.

For this week’s Sharing Time I thought it would be fun to invite a few of the children’s parents to come in and share about how they met and their wedding day…but I’ve added a fun twist! Read below for 2 great ideas!

To Tell the Truth

Is the Wedding Story True?

Begin your Sharing Time telling the children about Adam & Eve and explain to them that marriage between a man & a woman is essential to God’s plan. Once you have discussed that explain to the children that today you have invited several couples to come in and share their very own story of their wedding day BUT some of the stories that they will hear might be FALSE! They are going to have to decide which couples are ‘Telling the Truth’.

First, you will need a table for a panel of ‘judges’ on one side of the Primary room. On the opposite side of the room have 2 chairs (for the lovely couple). Have 3-4 or as many couples as you would like.

If you really want to get into the whole game show theme you could make a ‘To Tell The Truth’ sign, a microphone, etc.

Begin by picking 4-5 judges (children) to come up and sit at the judge’s table. Explain that they are about to meet a wonderful couple that are going to come in and share their story of how they met and their wedding. Tell them they will need to listen carefully to their story because at the end you will be asking them whether the story was True or False.

Hand each ‘judge’ a True or False paddle (I have included a printable for this, below).

Invite the first couple in and have them share their story. Be sure to tell each couple to only share a 2-3 minute (or less) story.

After they are done and the children have guessed if it is true or false have the children sit down and invite some new judges up to the table and then invite the new couple in.

Once the judges have guessed you could have the couples share their testimony or why they feel that marriage between a man and woman is important to them.

Continue until all the couples have shared their stories or until time runs out.

Try to mix it up a little. Younger children might be surprised to hear that an older couple has only been married a few years or invite a family that wasn’t sealed in the temple until later or find someone with a very funny story of how they met.

Another Way to Play!

Here’s another idea that you could use also.

Begin your Sharing Time telling the children about Adam & Eve and explain to them that marriage between a man & a woman is essential to God’s plan. Once you have discussed that explain to the children that today you have invited several couples to come in and share their very own story of their wedding day BUT they will not be able to see them. Show the pictures to the children and explain that they are going to have to guess who is who.

Before Primary invite 4-5 couples to come in and share about their wedding day with the Primary. Have the adults bring a large picture of them on their wedding day.

Set-Up:

You will need a table for a panel of ‘judges’ on one side of the Primary room. You will also need one of those large rolling chalkboards or create a large divider that the adults can stand behind.

On the front of the chalkboard or on a bulletin board attach each of the pictures and label each one with a number (1-4 or depending on how many couples help).

To Begin!

Invite 4 children up to the front to be your ‘judges’.

Explain that they are about to meet a wonderful couple that are going to come in and share their story of how they met and their wedding. Tell them they will need to listen carefully to their story because at the end you will be asking them who they think they are.

Hand each ‘judge’ a Number Paddle (I have included a printable for this, below).

Invite the first couple to come in and share their story. After they have finished ask the judges who they think the lovely couple is. Have the ‘judges’ look at the pictures and then pick the coordinating number on their paddle to guess.

Once all the judges have guess a number and have their paddles raised, have the couple ‘reveal’ themselves.

Have them share their testimony or why they feel that marriage between a man and woman is important to them.

To Create Your Paddles

To create your very own ‘True or False’ OR number paddles click on the link and download the file.

Then…print them out and cut each circle out.

You can have a paddle for each circle (One True & One False) or create a front and back by gluing the backs of each circle together.

I added a popsicle stick to the bottom of my paddles so that they children could hold up their paddle.

Grab your ‘True’ circle and glue or tape a popsicle stick to the bottom. Then on the back, using glue, glue around the edge. Grab your ‘False’ circle and place the back of the ‘False’ circle on top of the ‘True’ circle.

Let it dry and there you go…your very own True or False paddle!

{Sharing Time} By Living the Gospel I Set a Good Example For Others to Follow.

IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE(acting out a story): Tell the following story, and invite the children to act it out with you: “You were camping in the mountains with your family when a huge snowstorm hit (shiver). You couldn’t see the trail back to your campsite (hold hand over eyes, searching). Then your father came, wearing big, heavy boots (walk in place). He said, ‘I know the way! Follow me!’ Father made big footprints in the snow for you to follow.” Explain that just as we could follow the father’s footprints, others can see and follow the good example we set when we live the gospel. Ask the children to repeat after you, “By living the gospel I set a good example for others to follow.”

ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING AND APPLICATION (reading a scripture and discussing standards): Have the children read 1 Timothy 4:12. Write some statements from For the Strength of Youth that you feel are appropriate for the children on separate pieces of paper, and put them in a container. Invite a child to pick one statement and share a personal experience with that standard or tell how living that standard sets a good example for others to follow. Repeat with the other statements. Sing “I Want to Live the Gospel” (CS, 148).

Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

{Sharing Time} By Living the Gospel I Set a Good Example For Others to Follow.

When I read this week’s Sharing Time theme I quickly thought of ‘Bee’ and Example. I just didn’t know how I would incorporate bees into Sharing Time. Then I thought of the cute ‘fly swatter’ Singing Time idea I have seen all over the place….perfect!

For this week’s Sharing Time you will be ‘swatting’ bees and discussing how living certain standards sets a good example for others. You could play this activity several different ways, read below to find out how to play.

First, you will need to download and print my Bee cards (Found HERE) or create your own. The front of the cards says: “Bee an Example” and the back has different phrases from the ‘For the Strength of Youth’. Print them, cut them and then glue them together so that there is a front and a back.

Place your Bee cards onto a table at the front of the Primary Room. You will also need to place a large piece of packaging tape (roll it) onto the fly swatter.

Invite a child up to the front and tell them to ‘swat’ a bee. The tape should stick to one of the bee cards, they may have to swat a few times to get one to stick. Once they have chosen a card have them read the phrase on the back. Invite the child to share a personal experience with that standard or tell how living that standard sets a good example for others to follow.

Remove the bee and then invite another child up to the front to swat the next bee.

{You may need to replace the piece of tape a few times during the activity.}

Other Options:

Instead of having phrases (standards) on the back you could have different scenarios. Have the children take turns swatting at the bees and then ask them if that is a way to ‘Bee’ and example. You could then discuss why or why it isn’t.

For this optionyou will need 6 envelopes labeled 1-6. On the back of each ‘Bee’ card you will also write a number 1-6.

Inside of the envelopes have standards from the ‘For the Strength of Youth’ or different scenarios.

Take turns having a child swat a bee and then find the corresponding envelope. Have them read what is inside the envelope and discuss it as a primary.

One more option: For this you will also need 6 envelopes, but instead of numbering them write short phrases/standards on the front of the envelope (i.e. Honesty, Good Language, Modesty, etc.). Inside the envelope have an explanation of that specific standard found in the ‘For the Strength of Youth’.

On the bees write the beginning of a scenario

“You are at school when you hear your friend say a word that you are not allowed to say.”

Have the child look at each of the envelopes and decide which standard belongs to their scenario. Have them open the envelope and read what is inside. Then discuss what they could do to ‘Bee’ an Example.
