Thoughts on the Armor of God

I’ve been collecting some links and other information regarding the Armor of God.  As usual, I start out with a very grandiose idea and whittle it down to something simpler.  At first I had planned to have each student make a full cardboard set of armor.  Cool, yes.  Physical reminder of a powerful lesson, yes.  Doable, yes, with difficulty. Cost, manageable but may not be able to be replicated by…

Romans 1, Ashamed by NONE: When in Rome… Be VALIANT!

Downloaded from: http://brosimonsays.wordpress.com/2013/02/21/romans-1-ashamed-by-none-valiant-in-the-testimony-of-jesus-2/ “We are followers of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Such conversion and confidence is the result of diligent and deliberate effort. It is individual. It is the process of a lifetime” (Ann M. Dibb, I Know It. I Live It. I Love It.)

Hypocrisy – What’s on the Inside Matters

Object Lesson

I used this object lesson to teach about hypocrisy to my Seminary class. First, I printed chewing gum inserts on card stock.  Each insert was 140mm x 18mm and fit inside a Juicy Fruit wrapper. On each was written the following references and words: “Thou Whited Wall” Acts 23:3 and  “Full of Dead Men’s Bones”  Matthew 23:27. After cutting them out, I put the “fake” gum in the center section…

Basic Doctrine Assessment Results Calculation Spreadsheet

If you use the Basic Doctrines Assessment on a local level, you will want an easy way to format and process the results. Here is the spreadsheet I used.  Section Two is the most valuable in my opinion. If you’d like to see what the results of this BDA form look like, see my blog entry Results of the Basic Doctrines Assessment. These spreadsheets were created in Libre Office, the…

Results of the Basic Doctrines Assessment

Well — that was interesting.  We took the Basic Doctrines Assessment and I have compiled the data.  I sent a copy of the results to the YW President, YM President, SS President, and bishop for their reference. You gotta know, the BDA is difficult.  Really difficult.  The font is difficult to read, especially when photocopied, and the *answers* are written to deceive.  Many answers are “possible” but you have to…

Nt Acts 8-9

Downloaded from: http://seminarymoments.blogspot.com/2013/02/nt-acts-8-9.html Handed out one of these to each one of them. After we discussed what happened in Acts 8-9, they then quietly picked out a verse or verses that meant something to them. Then they came up to the front of the class, read the verse, explained it, told why they chose it, and how to apply it to our lives. Then they handed their stick back to me….

Late Night Seminary?

Downloaded from: http://seminaryatsixam.blogspot.com/2013/02/late-night-seminary.html I got this from fellow Seminary Teacher, PamI am sure we have all asked this question at times. When I stop to think about it, there is so much wisdom in Seminary at 6am, even though I am dog-dead tired by Friday.

Nt Acts 6-7 Scripture Quilt

Downloaded from: http://seminarymoments.blogspot.com/2013/02/nt-acts-6-7-scripture-quilt.html Divided up the scripture block into four sections. (Our class was few in numbers today) We made a Scripture Quilt! I handed out 5×5 “quilt ” blocks (paper) and had them:1. read their scripture block2. pick out the most important point to them3. draw a picture on the quilt block4. share with the class their thoughts and add their quilt block to the quilt backing!

The Garden Of Gethsemane

Downloaded from: http://seminaryatsixam.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-garden-of-gethsemane.html I used this idea from a great blog, Being LDS.We started with a white flower and clear water.I dropped red food coloring in to the water to represent our sins that Christ would take upon himself. When we came to class the next morning, the white flower was red.It had taken on all the sins, pain, sorrow, hurts, of the world.Very effective visual to teach the Atonement. It was…

Heart Attack In The Making

Downloaded from: http://seminaryatsixam.blogspot.com/2013/02/heart-attack-in-making.html Studying John 13-17 during Valentines Week was perfectly timed. The Savior taught about love 34 times in those 5 chapters.I had the kids make Valentines to decorate the Bishops’ doors and the hallway near the main entrance. The Valentines were addressed to many people in the ward.I told them to think about those who may not be as obvious as the Bishop or Youth Leaders. Some of the kids gave…

Seminary Basic Doctrines Assessment

I didn’t realize there was a form for assessing student understanding of Seminary lessons until I accidentally found it last year on the Seminary and Institutes website.  I suppose that this file is mostly used by full time Seminary teachers, but I am going to try it in my class tomorrow to see where I can direct my lessons so that students understand the gospel better. Some of the questions…
