When the pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, U.S. coins and currency were scarce. To be able to buy and sell things, early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints started making their own coins. Brigham Young, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons) directed that a mint should be established, and in that mint, gold coins in $20, $10, $5, and $2.50 denominations were to be produced. Only a few of those gold coins are left, with $10.00 gold coins being the most prized, as only 46 were ever minted. A real $10 Mormon Gold Coin recently sold for over $700,000.00 USD. The 1860 $5 gold denomination was the last of the gold coins produced by the Mormons, then in the Utah Territory. The obverse shows the lion of Judah surrounded by a legend in the Mormon alphabet that reads: HOLINESS TO THE LORD.” The reverse shows an eagle with wings spread behind a beehive, the legend “DESERET ASSAY OFFICE PURE GOLD.” The reverse legend was a trfile misleading, as the gold for these coins came from Colorado, and it was less than 24 karat (100% pure).
The 1860 Mormon $5 had a reported mintage of only 472 pieces. This coin is a replica of those coins from Utah Mormon history. Collect all five.
