I have the Valiet 9 class and we have to do Sharing time the last Sun. of the mo. Mine will be about Jesus is the light of the world.
I am gathering up various items that give light, such as a lightbulb, match, candle, flashlight, a picture of the sun and the moon. I will give an item to each child from my class and have them bring them forward to show. The last child will be holding the scriptures. I will ask all senior primary,”What do these things have in common?” They give light. How does the scriptures give light? Answer. As we read them they light our path as to which direction to follow, which road to take, because Jesus Christ is the light of the world.
Next we will role play. 1. Have two children arguing, touching and nagging each other.
Ask Are these children following the light? after each skit.
    2. Have a child with a tithing envelope handing it to the Bishop.
    3. Show a homeless person walking by two children that are pointing and laughing.
    4. Now show the same two children giving money to that same homeless person.
    5. Show a child praying on their knees.
    6. Show a child brushing another childs hair.
    7. Show a child reading scriptures.
    8. Show a child drying the dishes.
    You get the idea.
Next read a couple scriptures or have your class read some about Jesus being the Light of the world. Hope it helps!

This is a great website! My family is set up on the Teams mode and I can track their reading also. It is fun! Is anyone done with the Book of Mormon yet for President Hinkley’s challenge? I understand the site will have the OT Sunday School reading schedule for 2006.

Hi. We are doing the following for the Activities this next year.
First we sent out a survey to see what the sisters need to “enrich” their lives. We then called 6 new specialists to head up an activity group. So far, our activities consist of :

Weekly Meet at the Park Playgroup
Book Club (which was already running, but will now report to the RS)
Walking Group (again, we already had it running)
Sewing Night to teach, or complete projects.
    Scrap Booking
    Canning / Food Storage
    Dinner Club
    Craft / Home Decoration

Each Activity Specialist will report to the HFPE Leader (we actually have enough HFPE Committee members that they will each be assigned one specialist and activity group to monitor). All RS Activites will be monitored for content and to be sure that no one is being excluded from the group. It will be up to each individual Activity Specialist and group to determine how often they want to meet. But we are requesting they meet at least once a quarter (if each group did that, we would have an activity going somewhere once every other week).

We are really excited about the new program. The sisters in the ward feel it will provide them with good avenues to get together and accomplish something.

I think that as you prepare your activites, keep a prayer in your heart and remember the objectives you have in mind. Remember, these activities are about individual people not programs!

    Good Luck!

We combine on the 1st and 3rd weeks, and on the 2nd and 4th weeks we give the music leader 15 minutes to teach the song of the month and review it. I will still give them time if they want to have the kids pick off a tree, or choose the way to sing it.

I think it helps a lot and keeps the kids attention better. I am no the 1st counselor, but used to be the Senior Primary Music Leader…It was such a BIG job. It was like preparing sharing time every week instead of once or twice a month.

    Jill,
When I was watching General Conference this year for seminary, there was one that was my favorite. It was by Jeffery R. Holland called “To Young Women” In the Conference issue in November 2005. I don’t not know of any Christmas talks at the moment though.
    Hope it’s useful,

  • in reply to: Manual 3 Lesson 41 Being Dependable HELP! #244960

I am sorry that no one replied to my request for help. However, I thought since I taught the lesson this past Sunday I could share my lessons learned for anyone else needing help with this lesson.

I used the parachute analogy from the manual and it went over very well. I tied 4 strings to a pencil and had four girls hold each string until the pencil was vertical. I then asked one girl to let go of the string and watched as the pencil fell. This helped demonstrate how if one person drops the ball (or string in this case!) it is hard to keep things straight and on the right path.

I also made cute fliers that had 4 driving signs with work, home, church and school next to them. I told them that they were in the Driver’s Seat and their destiny was in their hands. In order to have a good outcome they needed to be dependable in their responsibilities. I asked the girls to use the fliers as a planner for the upcoming week so that they might be able to be depended upon to complete their responsibilities. That went over well and the 2nd Counselor in the bishopric took extra sheets so that he could use them for his own FHE! :D

I hope this helps someone else who might be struggling with this lesson!

Thank you for your timely response! I did found later that day a small article about the history of Visiting Teaching for which I have included the web address below. I am looking forward to reading closely the article you sent and hope to share it with my sisters.

Hi. We’ve done a couple of Literacy projects in our ward RS. The first year (as the Education Counselor) we instituted a Scripture Tag program:
    1. On Sunday as part of the opening exercises, a scripture was read. The assignment was for each of the sisters to go home that week, reread the scripture and then contact me (via phone or email) with a new scripture that they felt corresponded with the Sunday scripture. The first person to contact me with a scripture got a “point” (there was a rewards system) and then that was the scripture to be read the following Sunday. It ran really well for at least 6 month before the sisters lost interest….so the next year:
    2. Currently we are reading the Scripture Mastery scriptures each Sunday. We called a specialist to head this up and she comes each week with an additional thought or reference from a Conference Talk that explains the scripture. Each sister was given a seminary bookmark that lists all of the scripture mastery verses and a schedule (on the back side of the lesson schedule) so that they would know what scripture was to be read that week. It has gone over REALLY well. We always have a bit of discussion about the scripture and it has provided the sisters to read these verses that hold alot of value and doctrine.
    Good luck!

This is a rather late reply but I have just found this website.

One thing that happens in our ward is that sisters are asked to choose a favourite hymn and explain why it is. Then we either all sing it, of have a musical presentation or favourite CD version.

The hymns chosen have been wide and varied and have certainly made some of the hymns more meaningful to me knowing the personal stories of some of the sisters and the effect the hymn has had on their life.

Just out of interest my favourite (one of many) was ‘ I Stand all Amazed’ – simply because I do!
