I have been asked by our Enrichment board to be on the food committe for a “Wedding Feast”. To make a long story short, we need to come up with a menu of foods that would have been served at a Wedding Feast in Jesus’ time. I would like to keep the recipes simple as the cooking skills in our group are diverse. I have searched all over the Internet (Biblical recipes, Jewish recipes, Middle Eastern recipes, etc) and have come up with very little. I was wondering if anyone else out there has done anything like this…maybe even including what your menu was for “A Night in Bethlehem”. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! -
The only thing I know that was served is wine :)
You could try doing it like a passover feast — there’s lots of information about passover foods online.

Some search terms to try
“Seder”
“Seder menu”
“Jewish food”
“History of Jewish food”Here are some URLs that might help:
History of Jewish/Mediterranean foodUltimate Jewish Cuisine – recipes
Jewish Wedding Customs – references a book that may be helpful
Jewish History – more detailed description about Jewish wedding traditions
Jewish/Southern Wedding Menu – from the Food network — has the menu served at the wedding of a Jewish/Southern couple. Modern, but useful.
I’d think lamb would be served for sure. Bread. Eggs and bitter herbs are part of the passover meal.

and one more
Jewish Cuisine from the wiki (will be pretty useful for you)
Would you mind posting your menu when you create it so others can use it?

Jenny –
Thanks for your suggestions. I had no trouble finding information about Passover meals, but I was specifically looking for food that might have been served at a Wedding Feast in Jesus’ time. So the Passover meal and the modern day Jewish Wedding meals, are not exactly what I was looking for. I know that they would definitely have had meat (either lamb or beef). They probably also would have had bread, rice, vegetables, fruit and wine. I was just hoping to find some tastey and hopefully easy, recipes for those things
Thanks again for your suggestions.

This request is four years old now but is still relevant so here are my ideas. We did an evening of music and the spoken word where it was all set in the time of Christ. The food that was served were dates, figs, grapes, olives, pita bread shards, hummus dips and grape juice. It was very ynmmy :) The other one was an actual wedding feast as it was part of a 3 hour “fill your lamp” Stake RS activity based around, and concluded with “the ten virgins” musical fireside by Emily Freeman. We had the sisters enter the hall after their wedding preperation workshops (each carrying the small lamp they had made). The hall was set up with 3 beautifully decorated tables running along the back. The big centrepiece held 5 white wedding cakes (representing the 5 wise). Yhen we had baskets of dried and fresh fruits, nuts and a drink. Other ideas are to have subway type wraps with cream cheese, ham and salad cut up on a platter and a grape juice fountain. Depends on your budget.
