Youth devotionals — they can put the most patient of teachers over the edge.  The forgetting, the faking, the false doctrine, the too-familiar gospel cliches all combine in a slow-moving train wreck that can make opening exercises in your class a miserable experience. Students forget or ignore assignments, and we teachers act like it’s okay to share spiritual things with no preparation or thought. I have experienced a fair amount…

Hello, friends.  It’s been a long time :).  I’m sure you can appreciate why, what with three holidays in a month, plus new pages for all the 2013 stuff, plus 4 family birthdays, plus teaching Seminary, plus two funerals, plus trying to keep my marriage intact during the culmination of an eight month web site upgrade during the past 5 weeks — I’ve been busy.  We have recently begun using…

Luke 15 While we were watching this fantastic movie this morning: all of the students were commenting on how talented this sand story artist, Joe Castillo is. Then, one of my least introspective students asked himself aloud: “I wonder what I’ll be good at?” Another Freshman turned to him and said, “I know man! Me, too!” I didn’t know what to say to him that wouldn’t sound like a platitude,…

Well, another week has come and is nearly gone. I’m finally getting better at weeding out things to cover during class, but wow. It’s still difficult. With Old Testament, the problem was finding something to teach. With New Testament, it’s choosing which of many things to teach. If I ever teach New Testament in Seminary again, I will teach Mark first, then Luke and Matthew in harmony, and then John….

Youth and Sunday School lesson curricula are changing for 2013! Long awaited changes to the Young Women manual are (finally) being implemented! The new lesson curriculum, Come Follow Me, will require more thoughtful preparation by teachers, but I think it will result in stronger testimonies in our youth. Teachers will become less like lecturers, and more like guides, helping students gain testimony of gospel truths through discovery. Youth will learn…

Matthew 28 We wrapped up Matthew with a short summary and activity. I had the kids read the first 8 verses of this chapter silently and had 6 volunteers — 2 had to be female — come up to the front when they had finished reading. I had these kids act out the story in mime (silently). The boys ended up asking to be the women, so I let them,…

Tomorrow we are wrapping up Matthew. It seems like it took a long time to get through this book, and I was gone for nearly half of it. :) I’m feeling better about my lessons now. I don’t know if it was my jet lag or the kids getting used to me again or a lack of lesson preparation or getting back into the habit of teaching or what, but…

Well, it’s obvious that I’ve been away from teaching for a while. I’m feeling like I’m not quite on my A-game yet. I don’t know if the kids have gotten out of the habit of discussing with the other teacher or if I’m not asking the right questions. Either way, my lesson today could have had some improvement. Matthew 21 Yesterday’s was a fun and easy lesson to prepare. I…
