Blog post

This is the blog of Jenny Smith. I mostly blog about my calling in the LDS or Mormon Church.

Ask the Missionaries

After an extended vacation, I’m back! I’m still pretty jet-lagged from the trip, but at least getting up in the morning for Seminary isn’t a challenge. I’m waking up at midnight and trying to get back to sleep. Rome is 7 hours ahead and it’s taking a little time to get back into this time zone. This morning I woke up early and was so wide-awake that I just gave…

General Conference Jeopardy, Matthew 5

I am going to be unavailable for General Conference weekend, and I will not be uploading the General Conference Jeopardy game like I did last year. :-( I hope to be able to do it for April’s conference, but it definitely won’t happen for October 2012. If you make one, please share it here so that others can use it, too. Matthew 5 I showed the videos from http://biblevideos.lds.org/ on…

Matthew 4

Today we covered Matthew 4, the temptation of Christ. This has always been one of my favorite scripture stories. I’m not sure if it’s because Jesus owns Satan so soundly or if it’s that I feel like the temptations give an insight into the personality of the Savior… whatever it is, I always like this topic. There are a lot of JST footnotes in Matthew 4 that need to be…

Matthew 1-3

We’ve moved into our regular study of the scriptures. So far it seems to be going well. I am trying to focus my lessons on the expectation that the kids have read so that we get into some good habits of reading while they are still excited about Seminary. Matthew 1-2 I talked to the kids briefly about our very first lesson when I taught that there were two things…

Week One – Fin

Wow. That was over fast! It’s always amazing to me how fast Seminary seems to go. The Freshmen are settling in, and they all commented during class today. Having 16 isn’t much different than 12 so far, but I suspect I haven’t gotten their full blown craziness yet. My first absence was today. I think he skipped because he knew we were writing devotional talks. I will have to think…

My first sub….

I came down with a terrible sore throat and fever late yesterday afternoon, and so my husband subbed for me this morning in Seminary. The topic was the first of two sections of the plan of salvation. It was easy for him as a returned missionary to step in. I had already divided the board into three sections: premortal, mortal, and postmortal. I also stuck post it notes with words…

Scripture Study Helps for Seminary

Day two — successful completion! Today was scripture study helps. When I split our class into zones, I made sure each zone had at least one Freshman. Today we played scripture mastery jeopardy Mentor/Minion style. Upperclassmen were Mentors, and Freshmen were Minions. The Mentors were responsible to teach their Minions some valuable things about the scripture study helps in preparation to play Jeopardy. Before class I wrote some sample…

Regional Seminary Training

Saturday was our regional Seminary training. As usual, the presentations were of varying value and interest, but I was glad I went. This time I took notes on my tablet using Evernote. I am in love with Evernote, I have to say. I also use the Swype keyboard, which makes note taking using a device without a full keyboard totally do-able. I was sitting by a hardcore geek during one…

Rethinking devotional talks

Last year I didn’t include any kind of spiritual thought or talk in my devotional for Seminary. I didn’t feel that as a first year teacher I could confidently expect the students how to prepare a decent devotional. I am the kind of person who has students redo work that isn’t acceptable, and I’m not sure that beginning class with a “yeah, you’ll do THAT over tomorrow” is going to…

Scripture Mastery and Study Skills Tool Kit

I thought I’d post a few pictures of the items I created before class this year. Some of these are what I call Five Minute Fillers, while others are just tools for scripture mastery games: Here’s the collection. I made these new testament scripture mastery Classroom sized flash cards. They are printed on card stock and have the scripture reference on the back. Here are the Books of the New…
