The Legend of the Christmas Stocking
Many years ago there lived a merchant who was very poor. He had several daughters of marriageable age. It was the custom in those days to provide a dowry for each daughter so she could find a suitable mate.
The merchant was most distressed because he could not provide his lovely daughters with a dowry. St. Nicholas, hearing about his plight, dropped gold coins down the chimney of the good merchant. Some of the coins were caught in the stockings his daughters had left by the hearth to dry. And thus began the custom of the Christmas stocking.
