Almost finished with Isaiah

After the lesson on Isaiah 29, suddenly the Isaiah lessons started going much more smoothly. I’m not sure why that lesson was so particularly hard, but it was. That’s the chapter with the scripture mastery in it. I think that I added that one to the reading list. Talk about difficult. But I guess I caught my stride, and the Isaiah lessons haven’t been the terrible slog I thought they’d…

Teaching Isaiah

I’m not going to lie. This Isaiah stuff is HARD to teach! I will occasionally hit a lesson that takes me longer to prepare — in the 1-2 hour range. Usually that’s because I make a handout or have to try to find some supplemental media. But wow. This Isaiah stuff takes so much cross-referencing for me even to *start* understanding it that I’m spending at least 3-4 hours per…

1 Samuel

I promised a friend that I’d blog about what I’m doing in Seminary for 1 Samuel, but I’ve been so busy….. Today I’m catching up, as usual. Report cards and catching up to 1 Samuel 16 This day I had a lot of material to cover because of getting back from the holiday after so many missed days. It was also report card day. Joy. I had the kids working…

Regional Seminary Inservice Report – Leading Discussions with Good Questions and Lesson Ideas

We had a regional inservice training the first weekend in January. In this area, Seminary and Institute teachers are invited to a Saturday training that lasts for several hours. This one went from 9 AM to 3 PM, and included lunch. Lunch was the best part :) Our meetings start off with a kind of a keynote address and then we get to choose courses from two sessions in the…

Quarter One is DONE

The quarter is over — report cards passed out, new reading charts distributed. I can’t believe it’s gone by so fast! I was talking about how much we’ve done so far, when Jared pointed out that I have only 3 quarters left. :-/ This week has been a short week because of Veteran’s day and Election Day. Both of those are school hoidays here, and so we only teach 3…

Is it really Monday?

My aunt went into the hospital on Friday, so I was with her until about 9 PM Friday night. On Saturday I spent most of the day making ear rings and other jewelry to sell at the craft fair for our Indian tribe this weekend. Sunday I goofed off in the morning and then went to Church, suddenly realizing I had a ton of stuff to do, including finishing up…

Plan of Salvation Part Deux and Education the Key to Opportunity

GREAT NEWS!!! The county transportation department was able to find transportation on a bus for our kids, and now the Seminary students will be able to ride the bus from my house to school each morning! Now all the mommies have to do is get the kids here, and the kids’ ride to school is taken care of. What a blessing for the families! Brother and Sister Dingess brought over…

I Met with all My Students

Church met only the first hour Sunday due to the hurricane. Several people didn’t show and we didn’t have enough for Primary to operate, so I spent the rest of the day visiting my students and their families. It was a really good thing to do. I don’t think doing those visits is something that would have occurred to me on my own, so I’m grateful for the teachers who…

Before Class Begins

If you’re a new Seminary Teacher, like me, you’re wondering how to begin planning for these daily lessons. While the gospel-teaching part of a Seminary lesson is probably familiar to you (since you’ve probably taught Primary, young women, priesthood, Sunday school, etc.), the structure of a Seminary class may be unfamiliar. Scroll or jump down using the following jump menu: Basic Class Structure Seminary Materials Planning a Lesson Calendar Other…
