March 27, 2010 at 2:36 pm in reply to: Need HELP with ideas for reducing number of Church Meetings #244227
The problem in my unit is not really the *length* of meetings, but instead the *volume* of meetings…..
I recently compiled a list of our ward/stake activities by type and here’s how it broke down:
* Relief Society: 19
* Priesthood: 33 (mostly building cleaning)
* YSA: 56
* Primary: 57 (most are cubs/activity days)
* Family: 61 (49 of these are choir or Why I Believe Firesides)
* Youth-related Activities: 331 (170 are seminary, 42 are mutual)How I did it:
– exported the calendar at LDS.org as a CSV file; sorted by title, and categorized them (eliminating anything that I don’t think significantly affects families — like FHE or temple recommend interviews)What I took out:
– leadership meetings that affect fewer than 3 people
– Sunday meetings, excluding BYCWhat I added that wasn’t present on the calendar:
– SeminaryWhat is “Family”
– My “Family” category is a stretch. It’s a list of activities that you could potentially take your entire family to (excluding Sunday meetings, and including ward/stake temple trips). It is mostly made up of choir and Why I Believe Firesides, meaning there are fewer than 20 church-sponsored opportunities for families to be completely together based on this calendar. And yes, some 500 times a member of a family will be separated from his/her family due to a church activity. -

I haven’t listed any Spanish videos here, but you may be able to find Spanish videos on YouTube.

Sorry, but no, none of them said these words. It’s just someone’s idea of what these GAs might say if asked how they eat a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup based on their speaking styles in conference.
And yeah, J Golden was known for his — er — colorful language. :)

If you click on the image you’ll go to the YouTube page. From there you should be able to download the file to your computer. You can view this tutorial

Too many church meetings seems to be an almost universal complaint. We’re working on it here, too.
Our stake has designated one weekend per month as a “Family Weekend” during which no meetings besides the 3-hour block can be held. The family weekend lasts from Friday to Sunday and usually coincides with a holiday. Problem is, we haven’t reduced the number of meetings we hold, so we hold 48 weeks worth of meetings in what amounts to 36 weeks. :(
In one ward I attended in Utah, the Bishop determined we had too many youth activities going on, and so he declared we would have only one youth activity per week. If there was a dance, mutual was canceled. If we held a fireside, it was on a week with no dance and mutual was canceled. (I can’t remember how we handled class presidency meetings….) It was great!
Does anyone else have ideas?

February 19, 2010 at 1:19 pm in reply to: Alternate words to “Have I Done Any Good” for Visiting Teaching Skit #244240
Guzel, this page shows different words, or lyrics, that can be sung to the hymn “Have I done any Good” from the LDS hymnal. These other words could be sung with a visiting teaching skit.
Please let me know if that made sense! (Your English is very good, btw.)

There are several versions of Mormon Clue on our website. You can find them below:

I guess that you saw the huge list of VT stuff here, Becky: http://www.mormonshare.com/relief-society/visiting-teaching-workshop-ideas.php
I don’t have the Egg Workshop yet, but I hope to receive a copy!

Would you please email me a copy? [email protected]

There is an exception to the No Websites rule: singles activities/conferences. Certain regional singles activities can get permission to create websites to take registrations and make payments, something that is not currently available on an official site.

I’ve never given a Welcome to Primary talk, but I have done the Welcome to Relief Society talk a few times.
I always just tell the person how excited I am that they’ve made this important decision, that I know it’s a good one and that I haven’t regretted “getting wet” all those years ago.
If I were doing the Primary talk, I might mention how the lessons change from CTR A/B to Valiant — that now they teach scripture lessons because now we need to learn those lessons to be able to resist temptation. You could say that we have scriptures because people wrote down their experiences and encourage the child to write his/her experience today down so s/he can always remember it. I might also talk about Scouts or Activity Day girls.
Then I’d bear my testimony. The whole thing needn’t be more than 2-3 minutes.
It’s really not too bad — after you do it once, it’s easier than bearing testimony in Sacrament meeting.

Go to lds.org –> Stake and Ward websites (bottom right).
Login, then click on the “Membership Directory” link on the left. There’s a link at the top right of that page that says “with photos”. If you have uploaded any pictures, they will be included on that page.
You’ll need Administrator priveleges to upload pictures. Your ward clerk can give them to you upon approval of the Bishop
1. Go to lds.org –> Stake and Ward websites (bottom right).
2. Click on “Administrator Options” at the bottom left.
3. Click on “Membership Directory” at the left.
4. Click “Change” beside the member’s name you’d like to update. There’s a 50k limit per photo and photos must be 135 pixels high by 180 wide or smaller.If you know how to batch edit files, this won’t be a problem for you. Otherwise, it’s going to be a bit of a hassle to resize all your images. It’s unfortunate that lds.org fails to deliver basic functionality — AGAIN. :(
As far as the copy/paste idea, it will work easily, so you can edit the text as you need to.

This sounds like lots of fun, TMCGinnis! I am adding it to the activities section under your name (so you can edit it if you like), where it will be indexed better.

This is an interesting question, seeing that we have General Authories on record stating that they believe having “tangible reminder” like CTR rings, is a good thing for youth and adults. Many of the newer CTR rings do not use the (goofy) lettering found on the 10 cent rings, but some do. I expect the companies have permission to use it. I am only aware of two that do use the full on logo. I think that the implication that the Church disapproves of CTR rings is incorrect.
It’s possible the Intellectual Reserve Office doesn’t like it, however, and that’s a whole different beast. :)
In my experience, the Copyright Office is very active in protecting it’s copyright (which is why I expect Ringmasters and One Moment in Time have permission to use the CTR sheild with certain restrictions), but they are not very great about following up on questions. Their office is small, and they just don’t have time to follow up on all questions.

The Church’s website will create a photo directory listing of members automatically for you if you upload the pictures. It would not include the information about each sister like you’re looking for, but it’s possible you could generate the document, paste it into a wordprocesseor, and then edit it….
Not 100% sure about that tho….
