In the Aug. 1997 Ensign, in an article called "The Temple Garment: An Outward Expression of an Inward Committment," Carlos E. Asay (an emeritus member of the First Quorum of the Seventy) stated:
"And in a letter to priesthood leaders dated 10 October 1988, the First Presidency made the following important statements regarding how the garment should be worn: “Church members who have been clothed with the garment in the temple have made a covenant to wear it throughout their lives. This has been interpreted to mean that it is worn as underclothing both day and night. This sacred covenant is between the member and the Lord. Members should seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to answer for themselves any personal questions about the wearing of the garment. … The promise of protection and blessings is conditioned upon worthiness and faithfulness in keeping the covenant.
“The fundamental principle ought to be to wear the garment and not to find occasions to remove it. Thus, members should not remove either all or part of the garment to work in the yard or to lounge around the home in swimwear or immodest clothing. Nor should they remove it to participate in recreational activities that can reasonably be done with the garment worn properly beneath regular clothing. When the garment must be removed, such as for swimming, it should be restored as soon as possible.
“The principles of modesty and keeping the body appropriately covered are implicit in the covenant and should govern the nature of all clothing worn. Endowed members of the Church wear the garment as a reminder of the sacred covenants they have made with the Lord and also as a protection against temptation and evil. How it is worn is an outward expression of an inward commitment to follow the Savior.” 6
It's a great quote. I've bolded the important part for anyone who is interested in finding the letter. I was wondering if there was somewhere we could read the rest of the letter. It says it was specifically to priesthood leaders (and so I guess it was not one that was read ward-wide over pulpits, per se). Anyone know where I can find the text to this particular letter?

What program was used to create/design the RS SubArt? I am in need of a program that will help me do bookmarks with subart. I'm not having much luck. Looking forward to finishing the RS project for our annual celebration!

I am working harder to like these new lessons. I teach SS 12-13 and it seems that they don't really know alot about the subject at hand, so it's hard for them to teach their friends. I am now starting the 1st lesson of the month with a short section on the principle, ie, Atonement, then moving to the topic of the lesson-what the prophets say. Next week I am planning on talking about Gethsemane and the scriptures that go with that, then having the kids find other scriptures in other books about it.

The outlines in the Sunday School manual are just guidelines for teachers. I teach the principle along with the guidelines. When we were talking about the Plan of Salvation and how to use scriptures and teach our friends I made sure we talked about and learned more about the Plan of Salvation before I asked them how we can help our friends learn. I always make sure the understand and learn the principle first. One class we talked the whole time about the Plan of Salvation and any questions they had about how it all works. One Sunday another teacher in my ward taught all about understanding the Articles of Faith because the students asked him how to teach their friends what they believe if they don't understand the Articles of Faith themselves. He tied it into how teaching the gospel is important in the plan of salvation.
All classes are different which is why this new concept is great. The students should lead where you go in the class discussion and use the outlines as points to keep the discussion going. We spent 15 minutes on class time on how to approach friends with the gospel.

try and change things up…
what do I mean? Well, set the class room up differently – semi-circle one day – 2 rows of chairs the next – sometimes I do it with a purpose (maybe I'm dividing them into different groups) other days I do it just for the heck of it. That way they are never sure. But it makes them curious and hopefully that makes them a little more awake.
I bought cheap (from Dollar Tree) small dry erase boards. I use these quite a bit. If I ask a question and one person answers – that allows everyone else off the hook. By giving them all a board – I might ask the same question – then ask them to write on their board and then show me. This allows kids that are quieter to express themselves – plus it allows all to participate. I use them in scripture mastery – in stead of shouting out the answer – they must write it down – this allows everyone to think – I don't worry if they end up looking off their neighbor – at least they are writing it down and hopefully that helps them to learn a little better.
Instead of just sitting and reading – ask them to stand when it's their turn. I have a bean bag – if they answer a question – they get the beanbag and they get to toss it to someone else – that person then gets the next question or the next scripture to read – after they've read or answered the next question they toss it again – that person is next up… I've used hangman… I've put an object in a bag and handed it around the room and have them feel the bag and tried to have them figure out what the object was… I've even brought cereal and milk – and let them pour themselves a bowl of cereal and eat while I taught – they all stayed awake that day – and were in a good mood. (of course I only have about 12-15 students so I can do that occasionally)
short video clips – I love all the video's on "mormon youtube" (I even downloaded the clip of Linus reading Luke chapter 2 from the Peanuts Christmas special- they loved it)
basically – I use a lot of stuff from my days teaching music in primary. It's hard early in the morning. I just keep praising them for their efforts and know that if they happen to fall asleep occasionally – it might be because I'm not that interesting or it may be because they are truly exhausted. There are days when I leave and feel good about my lesson and there are days I leave and feel like things didn't go like I had hoped. If they get nothing from my lesson I know they will be blessed for being obedient and sometimes that's good enough.

I'm looking for photos, free of course, for a missionary bulletin board. I am thinking that a lighthouse could be the centerpiece with wording such as "Be the Light – Share the Light – the Light of the Gospel. I can find clip art, but am more interested in photos. Any ideas?

For my knowledge project I took notes on all 4 sessions of General Conference, and then afterwards I combined it all into a cute scrapbook organized by talk. I thought it was really cool, and it's really neat to look back on now that it's finished.

I felt so blessed to have the calling of TFOT teacher for several years in my ward. I truly enjoyed it and learned so much.
In my ward, the TFOT teachers were instructed to use almost exclusively the most current conference addresses to base our lessons on. In fact, the stake presidency and the bishopric decided on which talks would be the basis for each month's lesson. So the main part of the talk was based on one current talk and I often brought in other parts from talks also from the most current general conference.
You might try to look up families in the topic index of the most current conference and prayerfully select some thoughts to share. As I evolved in this calling I went from lecturing and reading my lessons almost word for word to being able to really draw the sisters into the lesson by stating a thought and following it with a question and then another thought following by a question/discussion. This way I spoke minimally and got wonderful input from the sisters as guided by the Spirit.
As to your topic of families–wow, that is a very broad topic. I would suggest that you prayerfully select an aspect of families that Heavenly Father knows the sisters in your ward need to learn about. And then rely on the most current conference talks to teach about this aspect.

As a Sunday School teacher it has been hard to teach that topic on how to teach their friends about the Godhead, the plan of Salvation, when we are not even teaching them about the Godhead or the Plan of Salvation. That is taught in YM/YW. It's very confusing to the youth, my child feels like doctrine should be taught in Sunday School and the how we teach/share should be in YM/YW. The lesson on music for the plan of Salvation for Sunday School would probably work better in YM/YW where there is a piano or an opening exercises or a Wednesday night to expound on the idea. Forget about showing a video, unless you bring your own TV/device for the kids to all huddle around, the TV's are taken.

I have just been called as Compassionate Service Leader in my ward, and would LOVE to learn more by way of forms to be filled out to help in emergencies, and relevant clip art, and ideas of when to help and how to best help. I have been looking online all day, and have gleaned a few ideas, but there MUST be a site that specializes in this area. I have yet to find it, and would love assistance.
