Up Skit for New Beginnings by Catherine W

Catherine W shared this great idea for New Beginnings! “This is a skit for New Beginnings that uses the Disney movie “UP” as a motif. The skit explains the Young Women’s program and shows how each of the YW values correlate with phrases from the “Press Forward” 2016 youth theme: 2 Nephi 31:20. “The skit is set in a “Wilderness Explorer” meeting, so most of the YW would wear simple…

President Faust’s Prophetic Prediction About Personal Progress in 2016

Back as a beehive, I remember having a mutual Personal Progress night where we’d been asked to find a talk on womanhood to discuss together. We all came excited to discuss and share, and when it came time to read, it turns out we all had the same talk (thanks to the fact that it ranked #1 of LDS.org’s search). It was President Faust’s “Womanhood; The Highest Place of Honor” from the year 2000. And so we discussed it really in depth and had a great experience. The brownies didn’t hurt either.

I don’t think I’ve read the talk since I read it six years ago with my Beehive class, but I recently felt inspired to take a glimpse at it again. I was reminded of being a beehive, brand new to Personal Progress. I was strolling through memory lane, when something really cool stood out to me. President Faust totally predicted what it would be like in 2016! Specifically, how Personal Progress would’ve changed by 2016.

We wonder what the Young Women requirements for Personal Progress awards will be like in the year 2016. Hopefully the values and standards of Young Women will be increasingly focused on spirituality and service to others.

Personal Progress has changed significantly since the year 2000. Back then, young women were still using the program started in 1985. This program included the seven YW values, each with a selection of experiences. There was a set number of experiences you needed to complete each year as a Beehive and a Mia Maid, and then as a Laurel you were supposed to complete two 20-30 hours projects centered around a Young Women value.

In 2002, they changed the structure of the program around quite a bit. They kept the seven values, and the experiences and projects, but now instead of pacing out the experiences and projects based on age, you could go at your own pace. The other significant change was that you now needed to complete a project for each value, following six experiences per value.

Most recently in 2009, they changed the program again. They kept the structure the same (though changing a few experiences and minor guidelines) but added the value of Virtue. This value is unique because it has fewer experiences, and has a required project of reading the Book of Mormon.

Now that we’ve had that brief history lesson, what does it have to do with President Faust’s statement?

He mentions two specific things which he hoped Young Women would be increasingly focused on: spirituality and service to others.

SPIRITUALITY

A huge element of spirituality is self-reliance, and the way the program has changed is definitely designed for increasing self-reliance. The program restructure in 2002 enabled Young Women to work at their own pace without the pressure of deadlines every birthday. It also gave them more freedom in selecting the experiences and projects which would help them grow the most.

Another significant change which has definitely encouraged a spiritual increase is making reading The Book of Mormon mandatory. With the 2002 program, reading one of the Standard Works was a suggestion for a Faith value project. Now that it’s required, and especially under the value of Virtue, it has prompted Young Women around the world to actively increase their testimony of The Book of Mormon.
Just this past April 2016 Conference, Elder Rasband shared

What did we learn [from the Youth]? We learned that our youth love the Lord, sustain their leaders, and desire to have their questions answered! Questions are an indication of a further desire to learn, to add to those truths already in place in our testimonies, and to be better prepared to “press forward with a steadfastness in Christ.”

This newly-called Apostle has noted this spiritual growth among youth in the church, and the fact that they’re actively seeking further knowledge of this Gospel.

SERVICE TO OTHERS

Personal Progress has always heavily emphasized service. The way Personal Progress enables service hasn’t changed much–but the opportunities for youth to serve have never been so plentiful. Youth are getting involved in their communities more and more. Studies have shown that millennials are more compassionate and charitable than previous generations, and chances are good that that trend will continue to grow.

Another huge and unprecedented way young women and finding service opportunities is through the growth of missionary and family history work on the internet. Young women are blogging, Snapchatting, Tweeting, Instagramming, and everything-elsing about the way the gospel (and Personal Progress) is blessing their lives. There are Missionaries who are required to use Facebook for missionary work!

And family history and temple work are moving forward in ways nobody could imagine 16 years ago. Research has never been easier, and temples are being built at an excelerated rate. Indexing millions of records takes only 5 minutes at a time. Elder Bednar shared:

Your fingers have been trained to text and tweet to accelerate and advance the work of the Lord—not just to communicate quickly with your friends. The skills and aptitude evident among many young people today are a preparation to contribute to the work of salvation.

Personal Progress is the greatest tool available to young women in 2016 to help them increase their spirituality and service to others. Not because it’s a great to-do list, or because it keeps you perfectly on track, but because it’s designed to help you with YOUR personal progress. It helps you to stay focused on what is spiritually important, while going at your own pace and focusing on your interests.

President Faust was certainly following inspiration when he made that statement. If he were alive today, he would certainly be impressed with the virtuous young women of 2016. So let’s keep going!

Photo Scavenger Hunt – upgrade!

THIS WEEK WE HAD A COMBINED YM/YW ACTIVITY THAT I PLANNED BECAUSE WE ARE BETWEEN CLASS PRESIDENCIES RIGHT NOW. THIS IS AN EASY ONE TO THROW TOGETHER AT THE LAST-MINUTE BECAUSE THERE ISN’T MUCH PREP, ITS NO-COST, AND IF YOU HAVE THE FLU (LIKE I DO) YOU WON’T HAVE TO DO MUCH :)

WE DID A PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT (WE HAVE DONE SOMETHING SIMILAR IN THE PAST, BUT I UPGRADED US TO A LONGER & MORE DIFFICULT LIST, AND ALSO PROVIDED A LIST OF QUESTIONS THAT COULD BE ANSWERED FOR BONUS POINTS. THIS MADE THE ACTIVITY LAST ABOUT AN HOUR)

I ASSIGNED OUT THE TEAMS AFTER EVERYONE ARRIVED. I TRIED TO MAKE EACH TEAM HAVE NO MORE THAN 4 OR 5 PEOPLE (HARDER TO GET 10 PEOPLE IN A SELFIE). I ALSO MADE SURE EACH TEAM HAD AT LEAST ONE YW AND ONE YM (THIS IS HELPFUL FOR SOME OF THE BONUS QUESTIONS). FINALLY, I MADE SURE THAT EACH TEAM HAD A PHONE THAT THEY COULD USE TO TAKE PHOTOS. YOU ONLY NEED 1 PHONE PER TEAM.

THE ONLY PREP WORK YOU MIGHT NEED TO DO IS TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING ON THE LIST IS AVAILABLE AT YOUR CHURCH BUILDING. WE HAVE A FAKE PLANT WITH PINK ROSES IN OUR FOYER, BUT MOST BUILDINGS PROBABLY WON’T. AND SOME THINGS AREN’T TOTALLY PREDICTABLE (LIKE, OUR KIDS COULDN’T FIND A POLITICAL BUMPER STICKER, THOUGH THERE IS USUALLY SOMEONE WITH AT LEAST 1 OF THEM IN THE PARKING LOT).

HERE IS THE PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT (I GAVE EACH TEAM A COPY):

PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT

AS A TEAM, LOCATE AND PHOTOGRAPH AS MANY OF THESE ITEMS AS YOU CAN. ALL TEAM MEMBERS MUST BE IN EVERY PHOTO. THE WINNING TEAM IS THE TEAM WHO GETS THE MOST OVERALL POINTS, NOT THE TEAM WHO FINISHES FIRST.
YOU CAN TAKE PHOTOS IN ANY ORDER.
SORRY, BUT ANY PHOTOS THAT DO NOT FOLLOW THE RULES WILL NOT COUNT!

RULES:
#1- EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF YOUR TEAM MUST BE IN EVERY SINGLE PHOTO.

#2- EACH ITEM MUST HAVE ITS OWN PHOTO (IE, A PHOTO WITH A PINK ROSE & A LION DOESN’T COUNT 2X)

#3- PLEASE DON’T DISTURB ANY CLASS, MEETING, OR ACTIVITY- THIS INCLUDES KNOCKING ON THE BISHOP’S DOOR, WHICH IS A “NO-NO”!  :)

#4- USING PICTURES OR PAINTINGS OF THINGS THAT ARE ALREADY HANGING IN THE CHURCH FOR YOUR PHOTOS IS OK. USING PHOTOS FROM THE INTERNET OR SAVED TO YOUR PHONE DO NOT COUNT (IE, USING A PHOTO OF A MISSIONARY FROM FACEBOOK DOES NOT COUNT)

TAKE A PHOTO OF YOUR ENTIRE TEAM WITH:

  • SOMETHING WITH WHEELS
  • A HUMAN PYRAMID (AT LEAST 3 PEOPLE FROM YOUR TEAM IN THE PYRAMID)
  • PAINTING OF SOMEONE BEING BAPTIZED
  • SOMETHING GLITTERY
  • THE DOORS THAT SEEM TO SAY TO ME, “SHHH….BE STILL”
  • A LION
  • PAINTING OF BABY JESUS
  • A PINK ROSE
  • A FULL-TIME MISSIONARY
  • THE WARD LIBRARY DOOR
  • A NECKLACE (DOUBLE POINTS IF IT IS A YW MEDALLION NECKLACE)
  • THOMAS S. MONSON
  • A MEMBER OF THE BISHOPRIC (THE BISHOP OR ONE OF HIS 2 COUNSELORS ONLY, CLERKS & SECRETARIES ARE NOT OFFICIAL BISHOPRIC MEMBERS) – (DON’T DISTURB BISHOP IF DOOR IS CLOSED)
  • A TEMPLE
  • THE SIGN OUTSIDE WITH THE NAME OF THE CHURCH
  • A MEMBER OF OUR YOUNG MEN PRESIDENCY OR WARD SCOUT LEADER
  • FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY DOOR
  • A WEDDING RING
  • OUR WARD “DUTY TO GOD” PLAQUE
  • SOMEONE DOING A HEAD-STAND OR HAND-STAND
  • A POLITICAL BUMPER STICKER
  • OUR WARD’S YOUTH BULLETIN BOARD
  • THE MOTHERS LOUNGE DOOR
  • EVERY MEMBER OF YOUR TEAM DOING A HULA DANCE
  • SOMETHING WHITE
  •  A MEMBER OF OUR YOUNG-WOMEN PRESIDENCY
  • EVERY MEMBER OF YOUR TEAM ACTING LIKE A ROBOT IN THE CHURCH PARKING LOT
  • YOUR TEAM MEMBERS SPELLING OUT Y M C A (WITH THEIR BODIES) IN AN EMPTY CLASSROOM

IN ADDITION TO THE PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT, THE TEAMS COULD ALSO OPT TO EARN BONUS POINTS BY ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS AS A TEAM (ON A SHEET THAT I HANDED THEM IF THEY WANTED IT):

BONUS POINT QUIZ – EACH QUESTION WORTH 1 BONUS POINT

NO PICTURES NEEDED – JUST ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.  1 POINT PER QUESTION. ENTIRE TEAM MUST STAY TOGETHER WHILE ANSWERING QUESTIONS – NO SPLITTING UP

BONUS QUESTIONS:

1. FIND A PERSON OVER AGE 20 WHO EARNED A “LETTER” IN HIGH SCHOOL, WRITE

Personal Progress for General Conference

I think it’s pretty evident that Personal Progress and General Conference go together better than Peanut Butter & Chocolate! Personal Progress is designed to help us draw closer to Christ and become like Him, and General Conference offers us specific revelation to help us do that!

Of course we know that General Conference serves as a great value project, but I went through the value experiences and found quite a few that include studying the teaching found in General Conference.

Faith #1

The first principle of the gospel is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Learn about faith from the scriptures and living prophets. Read Hebrews 11; Alma 32:17–43; Ether 12:6–22; and Joseph Smith—History 1:11–20. Read two general conference talks on faith. Exercise your own faith by establishing a habit of prayer in your life. Begin by regularly saying your morning and evening prayers. After three weeks of following this pattern, discuss with a parent or leader what you have learned about faith and how daily personal prayer has strengthened your faith. In your journal express your feelings about faith and prayer.

Divine Nature #2

As a young woman you are blessed with divine feminine qualities. Increase your understanding of and appreciation for womanhood. Read Proverbs 31:10–31 and two talks on womanhood from a conference issue of the Church magazines. Review what “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” says about being a wife and a mother. Then ask your mother or another mother you admire what she thinks are important attributes for being a mother. List the attributes in your journal. Then choose one of those attributes and strive to develop it. After two weeks report your success to a parent or leader.

Individual Worth #2

Learn about the importance of patriarchal blessings by studying about them in True to the Faith and recent conference talks. Find out why they are given and who can give them. Discuss with a parent or Church leader how to prepare to receive a patriarchal blessing and how it can teach you of your worth and identity and be a guide throughout your life. If you have not received your blessing, prepare to receive it.

Knowledge #4

Select a gospel principle you would like to understand better (for example, faith, repentance, charity, eternal families, or baptismal covenants). Read scriptures and the words of latter-day prophets that relate to the principle. Prepare a five-minute talk on the subject and give the talk in a sacrament meeting, in a Young Women meeting, to your family, or to your class. Record in your journal how you can apply this gospel principle in your life.

ANY Choice and Accountability Experience

In my opinion, it seems like the majority of conference talks touch on the topics covered in these experiences, so it should be easy to find one to correlate with the experience of your choice!

Good Works #4

Teach a lesson about service in family home evening or in another setting. Use pictures, music, examples [from General Conference], or demonstrations in your lesson. You may want to use the manual Teaching, No Greater Call as a resource.

Integrity #7

List the issues, trends, and problems that weaken the family. Read the First Presidency message, “The Family: A Proclamation to the World”, and the section on family in For the Strength of Youth. Then research in the Church magazines the counsel of those whom we sustain as prophets, seers, and revelators. Write in your journal your plan to strengthen your present family and the values and traditions you want to establish with your future family.

ANY Virtue Experience

As with Choice and Accountability, so many talks touch on the topics discussed in the value of Virtue, so there should be no problem finding one that fits!

Diamonds in the Rough

With the 2014 mutual theme being, “Come Unto Christ and be Perfected in Him…” I have had overwhelming email requests and comments on this particular post. Most of you are requesting a copy of the talk. Just so you know… I have made a request for the talk that was used, but not sure if she still has a copy. This particular New Beginnings was held a few years ago, back in 2010. I will let you know if and when it becomes available.
*
Original 2010 post:

AMBIANCE/DECOR
*
The Relief Society room was transformed into our Young Women’s Diamond Boutique

Décor included: black and white table coverings and drapes, black tulle, topiaries, lighting, large acrylic crystals, and a simple vase filled with faux beautiful soft pink roses (which were given to our new and incoming Beehives during the program).

The Young Women Medallion was displayed on a black velvet neck display. And the new Personal Progress booklet, Strength of Youth pamphlet and Guidebook for Parents and Leaders of Youth, each received a “bling, bling makeover”, using clear rhinestone stickers. the YW values were also displayed.

My daughter’s dress form was transformed into our daughter of a king, complete with a few of the large acrylic crystals around the neck and a sparkly “Diamonds in the Rough” sash, which I made using a piece of black scrap material and felt letters stickers I found at a local fabric store (simple, yet adorable!).

Along with the bling was a large piece of coal, a simple rock we found at the lake recently, spray painted black.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
*
I do not have an exact program outline. But our program included Personal Progress updates, Spotlights on our newest Beehives, a couple musical numbers, and talks from our Young Women’s President (Amy) and our Bishop. They each tied in the theme nicely. Amy started out her talk with the cutest object lesson… “How to make a diamond”.

*
OBJECT LESSON IDEAS
*
1) I recall Amy standing in front of the group in a darling apron. Holding a recipe card. She took a piece of coal (could be a simple rock painted black) and placed it in a frying pan. She asked the young women how long it would take her to turn that piece of coal into a diamond. I believe this is when she pulled out the blow torch. She didn’t use it of course. Just a visual aid. :) After some discussion, she bridged over to what it takes to be perfected in Him.

*
2) Another idea would be to use a tarnished piece of silver and polish it while explaining how our Savior helps refine us – in the end the silver will shine.

RESOURCES FOR TALK PREPARATION
*
The process to create diamonds is completely natural. The diamonds start out as a simple piece of coal, until a molten rock heats pure carbon under tremendous pressure. This causes the diamond crystals to be formed. Volcanic activity will, over time, push the diamonds to the earth’s surface, where they can be found buried in the earth. The diamonds still have to get cleaned and polished before they shine.
*
The  Lord’s Pattern for Peace, Elder Christoffel Golden Jr., Ensign April 2008
“Then, as I looked at his almost transparent countenance, I recalled many of the small and great deeds he had done. It was in the small deeds that I discovered the greater joy. Through his renewed life of submission and service, this noble servant of the Lord had received the approval of heaven. He was no longer a rough diamond but rather a refined, polished shaft.
*
Opposition in Order to Strengthen Us, Eldred G. Smith, General Conference October 1973
“We all have our trials of life to strengthen us. Each thinks he has the hardest or most severe trials. It may be that they are the most difficult only because they are the hardest or most difficult for you. The diamond is enhanced and made more valuable with polishing. Steel is made harder and more valuable through tempering. So also opposition builds the character of man.”
*
James E Faust uses the story of a man’s search for diamonds to teach a few different lessons:
Happiness and Our Search For Happiness, James E. Faust, Liahona October 2000
“How many times do we look for our happiness at a distance in space or time rather than right now, in our own homes, with our own families and friends?”
The Truth Shall Make You Free, James E. Faust, Liahona September 1998
“Where can truth be found?”

How Diamonds are Formed, National Geographic
As I watched this I was intrigued with the idea that once a diamond is formed beneath the earth’s surface, it still needs to be transported. Just as we need our Savior.

MUSICAL NUMBER SUGGESTIONS

Brie sang her first solo in public. She and one of our beehives sang “Daughter of a King“, by Jenny Phillips. They each sang a verse on their own and sang the chorus together. Brie was so nervous, but she did wonderful.

After the program, the Young Women were directed to the back of the room. There they found two tables which were set-up with supplies for each of them to make their own “Be Strong and of Good Courage” tiles – because that was the mutual theme for 2010. (supplies: 4×4 tiles, prepared vinyl lettering, and Pampered Chef scrapers)

Come Unto Christ New Beginnings

Downloaded from: http://inkablinka.com/2014/01/come-unto-christ-new-beginnings.html Our New Beginnings theme this year is, “Come Unto Christ: A Walk with the Savior through Personal Progress”. The evening’s inspiration comes from the article found in the January 2014 issue of the New Era. We’ve invited the Young Women and their families to attend, dressed in biblical attire, and to bring blankets to sit on. Our invitations have footprints crossing from the cover to the inside, marking…
