Arg!!! I don’t know how I missed this post! I have sitting on my desk at this very second, a copy of the text from a book about LDS hymns that has 6 additional verses to As Sisters In Zion that were omitted from the hymn book! Our Chorister handed it out a few weeks ago, and we sang some of the extra verses for the 5 minute music period. It’s been in my pile of “stuff to put on the website” and I haven’t gotten to it yet. I’ll set it out and get it in the Relief Society section this afternoon (I hope!).

Hmmmm… I haven’t seen anything that says “I love Seminary” before — it would be pretty unusual to find something like that since most LDS product manufacturers are out of Utah, and they cater to the Utah Mormon population where Seminary teacher is a paid full-time professional teaching position, and it’s extremely unlikely those teachers would be buying gifts for their 150+ students.

You could try these keyring/zipper pulls – they have sayings like “return with honor” and “choose you this day” and “what would Jesus do” on them.

I’m not sure how your keychains look, but could you cut the back off of a tie tack and glue them to your keychains?

Or maybe these link charms would work. There is a link charm keyring down at the bottom of the page that’s pretty cool — the girls in your class would love these, but I’m not sure about the boys.

Sorry I’m not much help! Let me know if you find anything that will work for you!

Thanks for that link, Mandy! That was really interesting! Here’s the important part:

    Quote:

In July 1843 a visiting committee of four was appointed in each ward to assess needs, solicit contributions from Church members, and distribute necessities. Visiting teachers have remained part of the Relief Society’s basic organizational structure ever since (see Visiting Teaching)…. By 1880, the Relief Society had 300 local units, and each one cared for the suffering and needy within its ward boundaries, using an expanded corps of visiting teachers to collect and distribute donations…. The Relief Society’s own traditional relief efforts through the visiting teachers gradually phased out and finally terminated in 1944 when visiting teachers stopped collecting charity funds. Since 1921, ward presidents rather than visiting teachers have been assessing family needs and distributing relief to the needy, under the direction of their respective bishops.

I hunted around and just can’t find this music. I tried to check http://library.lds.org in case the music came from an old New Era, but couldn’t find it. If you think that the song may have been published in the New Era, go to the link above and try doing an advanced search for some of the lyrics.

Thanks for sharing what worked for you in teaching this lesson!

There are a variety of Object Lessons on leadership and dependability in my database, and any handouts submitted that deal with this lesson are here.

Do you mean are values assigned monthly by the YW General Board? Not to my knowledge. If values were assigned to a particular month, it’d be published in the New Era in the What’s In It For You section, and probably in the Resource Guide.

Many units do assign a particular value to help YW focus on their Personal Progress each month. During Opening Exercises, they sometimes include memorizing the scripture associated with that value, changing tablecloths to value colors, a short weekly presentation by a leader or young woman on a value, a challenge to complete a Value Experience for that value during the month, or many other things.

The Resource Guide (published in the Conference editions of the Liahona or Ensign) has Value Experiences suggested for many of the weekly YW lessons. You could use those to help you choose which value to focus on in a given month, so that your Personal Progress focus and lessons reinforce each other.

But as far as there being a church-wide assignment of values to each month — I don’t know of any.

Let me know if you find out differently!

    I’d go to

    library.lds.org

and search for each of these terms : “thanksgiving sharing time” and “gratitude sharing time”. Be sure to set the pull down menu that says “Search In….” to Friend. That will get you a list of all the thanksgiving sharing time ideas published in the Friend, and your next search will give you all the sharing times that deal with gratitude.

I found several fun activities by searching this way — many of them even had visual aids. Let us know what you decide to do!

    God Bless You!

I’ve been meaning to split those kids off separately from the text! Thanks for reminding me!

I went ahead and made several of these Primary Children groupings:

Here are some of the activities in the database that deal with Joseph Smith or Jesus Christ. You could pick some of the ideas and activities from each to use in your activity.

    A Night in Bethlehem
    The Racestoration – 2
Remembering the Birth of the Savior

One caution, the church has asked us not to have people pretend to be Jesus Christ in our activities or skits. (AFAIK, reading the story in period costume is okay, when no one pretends to be the Savior, like in the activity above.)

This is an interesting question, but I can’t find the answer for you. This article is as close as I got: Now Let us Rejoice that mentions when the first VT messages came out in the Church’s women’s magazine. Let me know if you find anything else!

And here’s a quote from YW manual 3 Lesson 39:

    Quote:

“My dear friends, you are a royal generation. You were preserved to come to the earth in this time for a special purpose. Not just a few of you, but all of you. There are things for each of you to do that no one else can do as well as you. If you do not prepare to do them, they will not be done. Your mission is unique and distinctive for you. Please don’t make another have to take your place. He or she can’t do it as well as you can. If you will let Him, I testify that our Father in Heaven will walk with you through the journey of life and inspire you to know your special purpose hereâ€

Gosh — I’ve never been in a unit that didn’t have a children’s class. I’ve seen it done several ways:

    1) Call couples to serve as children’s class teachers for 3 month terms. Since Enrichment night is about to go quarterly, you could ask couples or parents to watch children one Enrichment night. In the ward I was in that did this, we actually got a calling from the Bishop, but the RS could aks specialists to do the job.

    2) Call a sister to serve as children’s class leader. A pair of dads would make a great choice, too, so that all sisters can participate in Enrichment. I wouldn’t call a male alone for liability reasons.

    3) Invite the YW to teach the children’s class as part of their babysitting service for personal progress.

Be sure to include some type of lesson material — a 10-15 minute lesson is plenty. We usually take ours from the Nursery manuals or Friend. You can show a church video, too.

We hold our children’s classes in the Nursery. We also serve them refreshments from the Enrichment meeting since there are always plenty.

Good luck in your new calling!
