{Sharing Time} I Can Repent

Sharing Time Ideas from the 2015 Outline
Encourage Understanding and Application: Explain that because of Jesus Christ, when we do something wrong we can repent, which means we stop sinning and turn to God. Explain that repentance includes feeling sorry, asking for forgiveness, righting the wrong, and not repeating the wrong. Briefly discuss these steps, emphasizing how the Savior can help us. Divide the children into groups and give each group a case study. Have them read the case study and discuss what they would do to repent. For example, someone gets angry and hits his brother or sister. What should he do? Express gratitude for the opportunity Jesus Christ has given us to repent.

Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

Back in 2010 I saw the idea (below) posted as a comment on the Sharing Time page on Sugardoodle. I thought it was such a cute idea.

Here is the comment that I read on Sugardoodle:

Scripture: D&C 59:9 – ‘And that thou mayest more fully keep thyself unspotted from the world, thou shat go to the house of prayer and offer up they sacraments upon my holy day.

“In primary, I had to try to teach the kids this scripture and the meaning of it during sharing time. Here’s how I did it and yes, it was a HUGE success in both Junior and Senior sharing time.  First at home, I cut out about 30 circles good sized but not too big. (maybe 4 x size of quarter)  Then I wrote things on them that would be considered a ‘spot’ or a ‘sin’ as the scripture refers to.
 Some of them included: stole money from mom’s purse, told a lie to my teacher, cheated on a test at school, hit my brother, etc.  That Sunday morning, before church, I put on a long skirt and top.  I then proceeded to pin each of these circles to my skirt, shirt, hair, shoes etc.  For the ones in my hair I had pulled my hair into a ponytail and wedged one or two in my hair.  Then I went to church with all these spots on me.  Make sure that the blank side is what everyone sees, not the written side)  I got quite a few looks from others as I walked around but pretended to not see. This of course piqued all of the kid’s curiosity all through sacrament.  If any of them asked what the circles were, I pretended not to see them and told them they were crazy!  This of course would get giggles.  By the time sharing time came around I read the scripture to them and we discussed what the scripture means when it talks about ‘spots’ and how they are really talking about our sins.  Then the kids started to raise their hands and say that I had spots all over me and since I couldn’t see them I had them point one out and suddenly I could see that one (but only that one).  So I removed the pin and read silently what it said.  Acted surprised and horrified and said lets move on. The kids would never let me move on because they would HAVE TO KNOW what was on the other side of that spot and so after some reluctance I would read it out loud.  All the kids were shocked that I had lied to my parents or stole money from my mom’s purse etc.  Then someone else would point out another spot and another spot until slowly we read them all.  Then we finished by discussing the scripture one more time and talking about repentance and how we can be forgiven of our sins and our spots can be removed if we repent.  It was a BIG HIT.  Then between the sharing times I would re pin all of them back to me to do it again with the next group. It was a memorable sharing time that really drove the message home.”

I thought that this idea would be great for this week’s Sharing Time. I’m not going to wear my spots to church, but I am planning on going down to the primary room about 10-15 minutes before Primary and begin pinning all of my ‘spots’ on me. As the children come in I will be sure to stand by the door to welcome them to Primary, hoping that they’ll notice the dots and question what they are. I will do as the sister did in the idea above.

To begin the Sharing Time you could read a scripture or discuss sin and compare it to spots.
Just like the idea above, discuss each of your ‘sin spots’. Explain that because of Jesus Christ, when we do something wrong we can repent, which means we stop sinning and turn to God. Explain that repentance includes feeling sorry, asking for forgiveness, righting the wrong, and not repeating the wrong. Briefly discuss these steps, emphasizing how the Savior can help us.

Since you will have spots all over, I thought this Mormonad would be great to show the primary children as you discuss the steps of repentance:

 I also created a little handout to help the children remember the steps of repentance. They aren’t worded exactly like the steps in the outline, but the same idea. My husband actually used these steps while on his mission.

Mother’s Day Questionnaire & Gift Idea

Today I wanted to share a fun little Mother’s Day treat & gift idea that we have decided to do for Primary this week.

We had decided that we were going to use ‘Riesens’ as the treat and that we would have a little tag or something that said:

“A few riesens why I love you.”

I had been thinking about what to do and thought about a questionnaire. I LOVE the questionnaires that have been floating around the internet. They are always so cute and funny.

I decided I wanted to do the same thing, so I looked online and found a
I used the idea, but made just a few minor changes.

Here is what they look like:

{There’s 2 to a page}

 I decided to ask my ‘soon-to-be’ 4 year old the questions. As always, they were so cute and funny.

Some of her answers:
I know my Mom cares because she…gets mad sometimes & happy sometimes. {guilty}
I love my Mom because she helps me…cut my hair when I get gum in my hair. {sigh…yes, yes I do}
I love my Mom when she makes me laugh by…acting like a chicken {not sure about this one} haha
I am sharing my questionnaires as a free printable! Just keep on reading and click the link at the bottom of this post to print yours out. If you don’t want to print in color just select on your printer options to print in Black and White. I tried it and it still prints out great.

Treat Idea
I happened to have some French fry boxes that I picked up from Pick Your Plum. I thought it would be really cute for the treat.

I got some clear treat baggies (leftover from birthday bags) and put a few Riesens, Hershey Hugs and Kisses inside. I decided to throw in some Hugs & Kisses…thought that would be cute.

Then I folded the bag and placed it inside the fry box upside down.

Next, I created and printed out some Happy Mother’s Day tags. I got some twine and wrapped it around the box a few times and then attached the tag.

On Sunday we’ll have the children fill out their questionnaire. They can fold it and place it inside the box or just hand it to their Mom when they give her the box of treats.

10 ‘Riesens’ I Love My Mom plus chocolate…I couldn’t ask for a better gift.
If you don’t have a box to put the candy in, no worries. Just get some clear plastic baggies and tie it off with some twine or curly ribbon. Then attach the tag and you’re good to go!

If you would like to print out your own questionnaire and tag click the links below.

 Thanks so much for stopping by. I would love to hear if you use my idea this week and how it goes.
Have a wonderful day & a fabulous Mother’s Day!

AMAZING (SERVICE) RACE MUTUAL ACTIVITY

“AMAZING (SERVICE) RACE” MUTUAL ACTIVITY
Super fun Mutual activity! We did this as an all-girls activity. I mixed up the teams so that there were multiple ages on each team. The girls had a great time!

We did a series of 5 challenges. The rules were “no law-breaking” (no speeding, must wear seat belts, etc), “be courteous at any home you visit,” and “no cheating or sabotaging other teams”. The winning team would be the first team to have every team member cross the finish line (tape on the floor). Our mutual ends at 8:30, so I asked that even if they weren’t done with all of the challenges, they return to the church no later than 8:20. Any team arriving at the finish line after 8:25 would be disqualified.

Each team had an adult leader/parent driver who took them from site to site in their vehicle handed out the next challenge envelopes as challenges were completed. After each challenge, they got a new challenge envelope with a new location & assignment. I used plain envelopes marked with the challenge numbers in their team color. Each team leader (adult) got a clipboard with the envelopes attached. Each team also had a laundry basket of supplies that they carried with them. We asked them to take group photos as each challenge was completed.

We had a ward boundary change last year, so since some of the services that we would be doing we would be to families in our ward area, I tried to include a good mix of people from throughout the ward (some people they might not know, some people they do know, people who serve in leadership positions, less-active or part-member families, etc). I asked around the ward for volunteers with weeds in their yards (not a problem finding those!) and asked specific families who I knew didn’t have food allergy issues if they would let us bring them a meal for the meal-delivery challenge.

BASKET SUPPLIES: 2 pairs of work gloves, 2 garden tools, a trash bag, a roll of scotch tape, a bucket
CHALLENGE 1- “WEEDS”: went to a nearby home (pre-arranged) and pulled a bucket full of weeds. They had to share tools & gloves & use the bucket we provided. We had each team go to a different home so they couldn’t tell which team was “ahead”.
CHALLENGE 2- “CHANGE”: they got an index card (with 4 quarters taped to it) inside their envelope for the challenge (the cards said “please enjoy this random act of free $”). The assignment was to go to a nearby grocery store and tape the card (using the tape in the basket) to a vending machine.
CHALLENGE 3- “WRITE”: went back to the church and found a greeting card taped to the wall of the overflow room. Pens were provided on site, and each team member had to write or draw something on the card (we did ours for a YW who is out of town for a while, but could do a card for a missionary). Next team to arrive at this challenge site could not start until the previous team was finished.
CHALLENGE 4- “BITE”: went to church kitchen, found a bag in the fridge (marked with their team color). Followed the instructions to assemble a freezer meal using the provided gallon freezer zip-lock bag and ingredients (they did teriyaki chicken: frozen chicken breasts, a bottle of teriyaki sauce, 1/2 chopped onion, 1 bag frozen broccoli/cauliflower). Then they delivered their meal (and cooking instructions) to a (pre-arranged) family in the ward (again, we had each team go to a different home so that one family didn’t get over-run by teriyaki chicken).

CHALLENGE 5- “TRASHY”: go out in the church parking lot and have each team member pick up 2 pieces of trash and put them in the trash bag before racing to the final finish line (ours was at the family history center). I knew this would be a tough one, since there is never any trash in our parking lot, so in tiny letters at the bottom of the challenge, I wrote “If you have followed directions and read this entire challenge before starting to pick up trash, you can skip the trash pick-up and head straight to the finish line” – All of our teams started to head out to pick up the trash, but caught themselves in time!

They were hamming it up a bit! In the corner you can see the coveted prize – a giant tub of cheese balls!
I had actually planned on doing several more challenges, but I panicked and decided to cut some of them at the last minute because I was worried that the girls wouldn’t be done in time. Boy, was I wrong. Our first team came back after only 25 minutes! The next teams were around 30 minutes and 35 minutes. I was shocked how quickly they finished.
So if you want your activity to run longer, you probably want to add a few more challenges. One of the challenges I “cut” was making little gift baskets – mustache themed “stash” of snacks for the bishop (my idea was that one team would make a drink basket (bottled water, juice), one would make a sweets basket (candy), and the other would make a savory snack basket (jerky, chips). And then they would deliver their baskets wearing mustaches, of course. I got the idea for this here and adapted it.
You could also do “road blocks” and “detours” like on the Amazing Race tv show (also got cut at the last minute in our version!) but that would add some time to the activity as well.
BONUS: The girls didn’t know this (because they were having too much fun) but in addition to doing service, they also learned some valuable skills (weed-pulling, meal preparation, etc). I hope that it also helped build unity in the ward because the YW got to meet new people in the ward and the ward members saw the YW out serving in the community.
