Blog post

This is the blog of Jenny Smith. I mostly blog about my calling in the LDS or Mormon Church.

My heart is racing….

Tomorow’s the big day — Seminary starts. My stomach is churning and I’ve not been able to sleep well this past week. We are having some trouble with DS, and when compounded with my anxiety about Seminary and the shoulder pains, it’s been a rough week. I’ve been practicing getting up on time. I forgot how much I like getting up early. This schedule will really help me get going…

DragonCon 2011

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy are 80 this year — EIGHTY — and I decided I better fulfill a lifelong wish of mine to see them in person. The big Star Trek convention in Las Vegas was coming up, but the timing was really awkward with some things going on in our family, and I wasn’t yet sold. A friend of Jared’s told him about another convention, Dragoncon. Dragon Con…

I Met with all My Students

Church met only the first hour Sunday due to the hurricane. Several people didn’t show and we didn’t have enough for Primary to operate, so I spent the rest of the day visiting my students and their families. It was a really good thing to do. I don’t think doing those visits is something that would have occurred to me on my own, so I’m grateful for the teachers who…

Seminary Materials

I’m a little less than four weeks out. Collecting and organizing materials has been the main emphasis this week. Today I spent a good bit of time adding some of the handouts I’ve been given to my manual. This experience has made me wish that my laser printer had a duplexer for two-sided printing…. It seems that the login issues I was having at http://si.lds.org/ were being caused by the…

Collecting Seminary Ideas

Well, I’m continuing my hunt for Seminary ideas and have greatly expanded the Seminary articles on the site. I’ve added the following: Seminary structure – for classroom organizational type stuff, how to assign a devotional, choose a prayer, integrate scripture mastery, etc. This is the part I had no clue about and about which I asked the most questions. Seminary teaching tips – Includes lots of random links and ideas…

Hooray for Seminary Teachers!

So today I feel better that I have in some time about Seminary. My good friend, Brent, taught Old Testament back in the day, and when he heard that I was teaching asked if he could help. We had arranged for our families to get together last night for a Family Home Evening where we’d do Old Testament things. They made a delicious Meditterranean style dinner, and also invited their…

Online Seminary Training

I wrote a little bit last week on the online resources for Seminary training, but my internet connection flipped out and the blog entry was lost before it could save. :( So I’m going to try to reconstruct was I was doing last week to prepare for Seminary. I didn’t spend a whole lot of time on Seminary toward the end of the week because I was trying to finish…

Starting to Plan …. Seminary

Well, now I finally have my materials to begin Seminary. In this area, the S&I rep has created a method whereby he hopes that the callings are issued, which was unfortunately ignored by our stake, and many of us are just now receiving our materials. It must really suck to be an S&I person. You’re in charge and accountable for overseeing Seminary in a given area, but you have no…

A new gig

Well, my tenure as YW secretary will be over when Girl’s Camp is done. Sunday I was called as early-morning seminary teacher for our unit. I’d be lying if I said I was thrilled at the prospect at first, but I’m getting more and more excited about the ideas I’m getting. I’ve never actually attended early morning seminary. We had home study seminary with once per week lessons at the…

Choosing a Base Theme

I have decided to choose a base theme for the sites and make my life easier. At first I thought that I would have to create modules for each of my custom content types to give each type custom theming. I tried to write a module, and it proved too difficult for me. I just can not wrap my head around hook_alter or preprocess or pretty much any of these…

12 Ways of Christmas with Hot Pink Pansy

Andi at the Hot Pink Pansy has invited me to participate in her annual guest design project, the Twelve Ways of Christmas! This year she’s doing something different, and she has created a 12 Ways of Christmas blog located at this URL: http://12waysofchristmas.blogspot.com/ Several other LDS designers will be participating in the project, which provides family home evening style ideas for 12 values to teach families during Christmas time. I’m…
