Explain that when we are free from sin we feel good, uplifted, free…like this balloon. However, when we make mistakes or choose poorly we are weighed down by our sin. As you discuss sin, place the rocks or blocks in a line in order on top of the balloon’s ribbon so that they are holding the balloon down with the label side down. Discuss the repentance process by lifting the…

Put all the rocks in the bowl. Ask two people to fill the bowl with the apples. They will see that they can only fill the bowl with the apples if they first take the rocks out of the bowl. Follow with one or both of these lessons: 1. Read and mark Alma 22:15 together. It says: And it came to pass that after Aaron had expounded these things unto…

Start by holding up a relatively crisp bill. Ask how much this bill is worth. Then crumble it up into a ball, stomp on it, punch it down, do whatever you want to make it yucky. Finally, unfold the bill and hold it up again. Ask how much it is worth now. Is there anyone who wouldn’t want it now that is has been tarnished? Point out that this is…

Explain that the feather represents ourselves and place it on the kitchen scale. Add a pile of rocks on top of the feather. As you discuss each step towards repentance, take off a rock and label it as that step. When you have gone through all the steps, the “burden” should have been lifted from the feather, making it free again.

It probably took about 3 minutes. Then I washed off the cleaner in the bowl of water. After that I dried it off and let the class look at how it was restored to…

This is not for the faint hearted! It is a little expensive, but well worth the cost for the lesson that is learned. Arrange the mixer and the ingredients on the table in a way so that everyone knows you are making chocolate chip cookies (or whatever your family favorite is). You’ve already got them thinking, “Cookies! Cookies!” from the time they walk in the door and look at the…

Begin by having some water in the pie pan. Sprinkle pepper into the pan as you talk about how sinning can make us feel sad and unclean. Hold up the bar of soap and ask what the purpose of soap is. (Answer: to clean). Explain that repentance is like this bar of soap. When we repent (place tip of the soap into the peppered water), all of our sins are…

Ask the girls who wants this? They’ll all raise their hands. Then wrinkle the bill up, and ask them again “Who wants it now?”. When they all say, “I don’t care, I still want it!”. Throw it on the floor and rub it with your shoe. When they still want it, ask them if they’d want it if you put it in the toilet. Well, you get the idea. I’ve…

After discussion on Repentance, have the students put a small pebble in their shoe and stand up until they feel it’s sharpness on their foot. Tell them that sins are like this pebble, it is constantly bringing us irritation and pain until we remove it. Tell them that if they have any unresolved sins, they should keep the pebble in their shoe until they have resolved the sin. Then they…

Explain that sin burdens our souls. Then have someone put on the backpack. Place several large rocks in the backpack, talking about the burden of sin, or small sins that one might commit. Have the person in the backpack describe the weight of the backpack. Then say that repentance removes the load, and one by one take the rocks back out and have the person in the backpack describe how…
