Activity: "The Family: A Proclamation to the World"

The Sharing Time theme for the first week of October is “‘The Family: A Proclamation to the World’ came from God to help my family.”  Because of General Conference and other scheduling considerations, your primary may or may not be covering this lesson.  The Outline for Sharing Time suggests giving a sentence from the Proclamation to each class and asking them to think of a song which relates to that sentence.  If your Primary Presidency is teaching this lesson, consider working with them.  If the lesson is being skipped, you can use the activity on your own for Singing Time.

Variations:
-If your primary is familiar with the pictures in the Matching Game, you might print a picture to go with each of the chosen songs.  Post them all on the board at the front of the room.  As you read each quote, ask the children to decide which song they feel fits.

-In larger Primaries, or those which are split between Junior and Senior, this activity might be too difficult for the younger kids.  Along with the quote from “The Proclamation,” you might give the children three song suggestions and ask which they believe fits best.

Below, find my suggestions for quotes and songs.

“We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children.”

Latter-Day Prophets – 134

“All human beings -male and female-are created in the image of God.  Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny.”

IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE(acting out a story): Tell the following story, and invite the children to act it out with you: “You were camping in the mountains with your family when a huge snowstorm hit (shiver). You couldn’t see the trail back to your campsite (hold hand over eyes, searching). Then your father came, wearing big, heavy boots (walk in place). He said, ‘I know the way! Follow me!’ Father made big footprints in the snow for you to follow.” Explain that just as we could follow the father’s footprints, others can see and follow the good example we set when we live the gospel.  Ask the children to repeat after you, “By living the gospel I set a good example for others to follow.”

ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING AND APPLICATION (reading a scripture and discussing standards): Have the children read 1 Timothy 4:12. Write some statements from For the Strength of Youth that you feel are appropriate for the children on separate pieces of paper, and put them in a container. Invite a child to pick one statement and share a personal experience with that standard or tell how living that standard sets a good example for others to follow. Repeat with the other statements. Sing “I Want to Live the Gospel” (CS, 148).

{Sharing Time} By Living the Gospel I Set a Good Example For Others to Follow.

When I read this week’s Sharing Time theme I quickly thought of ‘Bee’ and Example. I just didn’t know how I would incorporate bees into Sharing Time. Then I thought of the cute ‘fly swatter’ Singing Time idea I have seen all over the place….perfect!
For this week’s Sharing Time you will be ‘swatting’ bees and discussing how living certain standards sets a good example for others. You could play this activity several different ways, read below to find out how to play.

First, you will need to download and print my Bee cards (Found HERE) or create your own. The front of the cards says: “Bee an Example” and the back has different phrases from the ‘For the Strength of Youth’. Print them, cut them and then glue them together so that there is a front and a back.

Place your Bee cards onto a table at the front of the Primary Room. You will also need to place a large piece of packaging tape (roll it) onto the fly swatter.

Invite a child up to the front and tell them to ‘swat’ a bee. The tape should stick to one of the bee cards, they may have to swat a few times to get one to stick. Once they have chosen a card have them read the phrase on the back. Invite the child to share a personal experience with that standard or tell how living that standard sets a good example for others to follow.

Remove the bee and then invite another child up to the front to swat the next bee.

{You may need to replace the piece of tape a few times during the activity.}

Other Options:

Instead of having phrases (standards) on the back you could have different scenarios. Have the children take turns swatting at the bees and then ask them if that is a way to ‘Bee’ and example. You could then discuss why or why it isn’t.

For this optionyou will need 6 envelopes labeled 1-6. On the back of each ‘Bee’ card you will also write a number 1-6.

Inside of the envelopes have standards from the ‘For the Strength of Youth’ or different scenarios.

Take turns having a child swat a bee and then find the corresponding envelope. Have them read what is inside the envelope and discuss it as a primary.

One more option: For this you will also need 6 envelopes, but instead of numbering them write short phrases/standards on the front of the envelope (i.e. Honesty, Good Language, Modesty, etc.). Inside the envelope have an explanation of that specific standard found in the ‘For the Strength of Youth’.

On the bees write the beginning of a scenario

“You are at school when you hear your friend say a word that you are not allowed to say.”

Have the child look at each of the envelopes and decide which standard belongs to their scenario. Have them open the envelope and read what is inside. Then discuss what they could do to ‘Bee’ an Example.

“Bee” an Example Cards

Here are what my ‘Bee’ cards look like. There are 2 pages: One page of the front {Bee an Example} & one page of the back {Standards}.

Song: I Believe in Being Honest

By Erin Isenberg I love this song because it’s quick and easy to teach and it’s catchy enough to get stuck in the kids’ heads. If I were chorister, I’d be using it for the third week of September, 2014 to go with the theme of “We believe in being honest,” and as a break from practicing program songs. Because I don’t want to overwhelm the kids with learning a…

IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE(hearing a story and reciting a scripture): Tell a story about a child who tells another child about his fishing trip and greatly exaggerates the size of the fish he caught. Ask the children what the child did wrong and what he should have done. Invite the children to think of one of the Articles of Faith that would help them remember to tell the truth. Repeat together the beginning of the thirteenth article of faith (“We believe in being honest”).

ENCOURAGE APPLICATION(responding to situations): Present a situation in which the children may be tempted to be dishonest, such as when a parent asks who left toys on the floor. Invite the children to stand when they know what they could do to be honest. Have a few children share their answers. Repeat with different situations as time allows. Encourage the children to think, “We believe in being honest” when they are tempted to do otherwise.

Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

I really liked the idea of the fishing story in this week’s ‘Identify the Doctrine’. I decided to

use the story for a fun ‘fishing’ activity for the ‘Encourage Application’ part. Hope you like it!

For this idea you will need a fishing pole: a dowel, string, and a magnet.

Tie your string to the end of your dowel and then attach the magnet to the end of the string (this will be used as the hook).

Next, you will need to cut-out fish. You can cut some out of construction paper or find some fish clip art online and print and cut.

To follow the outline, have several different situations written on the back of each fish in which the children may be tempted to be dishonest.

Take turns inviting a child up to the front to go fishing. Once they have caught a fish have them read the situation on the back and have them tell you what they could do to be honest.

Continue fishing until all the fish have been caught or until time runs out.

Another Way to Play!

Split the Primary into 2 teams (children vs. teachers would be fun). Have your fish on the ground, but for this version you will have scenarios {good & bad} on the back of each fish. You will also have a certain amount of points. Good fish will receive points, but dishonest fish will get points taken away.

Have the children take turns fishing for fish. Have them read the scenarios on the back of the fish. If they catch a good fish award them the points on the fish. If they catch a dishonest fish then they will have that number of points taken away.

Continue playing until all the fish have been caught or time runs out.

One Last Way to Play!

For this idea the whole primary will be a team trying to reach a certain amount of points. The children always seem to love a good challenge. :)

Have scenarios or situations on the back of each fish as well as a certain amount of points (2 points, 5 points, 10 points, etc.).

You will also need to have 3-4 ‘dishonest’ fish that have a short phrase like:

{Sharing Time} We Believe in Being Honest.

{You got ‘Caught’ being dishonest!}

When these fish are caught they must throw them back into the pile and lose a certain amount of points (10 points, 15 points, etc.). You could also share a short little scenario ‘how’ they were caught being dishonest and then have them share how they could right the wrong.

Have the children fish until they have reached their goal or until time runs out.

Do you like my ‘You Got Caught’ tags (shown above)? I created a printable that you could use to attach to your ‘dishonest’ fish.
A Few Ideas from The Friend

Here are a few more ideas that I found from previous ‘Friend’ magazines.

Place two large paper strips on the blackboard or wall. On one, print True; and on the other, Not True. Prepare one set of statements that are true and another set of statements that are not true. Example(s): Snow is white. Rain is wet. People need water to live. Salt is sweet. The sun is dark. Ice cream is hot. Arrange the chairs in the middle of the room with one less chair than there are children. Have the children march around the chairs as they sing “I Believe in Being Honest” (Children’s Songbook, page 149). When the music stops, have the child who does not have a chair choose one of the statements and place it under the True or Not True sign. Ask the children what truth is and what it means to be honest. Remind them that we believe in being honest (see A of F 1:13).

Prepare a list of situations such as: (a) David found a dollar bill on the floor at school. What should he do? (b) Mary was riding her sister’s bike and ran into a tree. Now the bike is broken. What should she do? (c) Anne wrote on the wall with a crayon. Her mother asked who did it? What should Anne say? (d) Jimmy ate all the cookies mother made for dinner. Mother asked who did it? What should Jimmy do? (e) Susan sees some girls teasing a younger child. What should she do? Clear a space in the middle of the room. Have the children sit on the floor. Pass a beanbag around while singing “I Believe in Being Honest” (Children’s Songbook, p. 149). When the music stops, have the child holding the beanbag suggest an honest way of dealing with one of the situations. Make a list of the situations for each child, and suggest that they play this game with their family.

I hope you enjoy my Sharing Time Ideas that I have shared today and are able to use them for your Primary. I would love to hear how your Sharing Time goes and any changes that you made.

Thanks so much for stopping by. Have an amazing day & a great Sharing Time!
