Diamonds in the Rough

With the 2014 mutual theme being, “Come Unto Christ and be Perfected in Him…” I have had overwhelming email requests and comments on this particular post. Most of you are requesting a copy of the talk. Just so you know… I have made a request for the talk that was used, but not sure if she still has a copy. This particular New Beginnings was held a few years ago, back in 2010. I will let you know if and when it becomes available.
*
Original 2010 post:
*
This year our ward’s New Beginnings theme was, “Diamonds in the rough: Come unto Christ and be perfected in Him” .

Square Bracket Cards

I saw these cute Square Bracket Cards and thought they might be a bit more “girlie” than the straight edge we used on our invites.

AMBIANCE/DECOR
*
The Relief Society room was transformed into our Young Women’s Diamond Boutique

Décor included: black and white table coverings and drapes, black tulle, topiaries, lighting, large acrylic crystals, and a simple vase filled with faux beautiful soft pink roses (which were given to our new and incoming Beehives during the program).

The Young Women Medallion was displayed on a black velvet neck display. And the new Personal Progress booklet, Strength of Youth pamphlet and Guidebook for Parents and Leaders of Youth, each received a “bling, bling makeover”, using clear rhinestone stickers. the YW values were also displayed.

My daughter’s dress form was transformed into our daughter of a king, complete with a few of the large acrylic crystals around the neck and a sparkly “Diamonds in the Rough” sash, which I made using a piece of black scrap material and felt letters stickers I found at a local fabric store (simple, yet adorable!).

Along with the bling was a large piece of coal, a simple rock we found at the lake recently, spray painted black.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
*
I do not have an exact program outline. But our program included Personal Progress updates, Spotlights on our newest Beehives, a couple musical numbers, and talks from our Young Women’s President (Amy) and our Bishop. They each tied in the theme nicely. Amy started out her talk with the cutest object lesson… “How to make a diamond”.
*

*
OBJECT LESSON IDEAS
*
1) I recall Amy standing in front of the group in a darling apron. Holding a recipe card. She took a piece of coal (could be a simple rock painted black) and placed it in a frying pan. She asked the young women how long it would take her to turn that piece of coal into a diamond. I believe this is when she pulled out the blow torch. She didn’t use it of course. Just a visual aid. :) After some discussion, she bridged over to what it takes to be perfected in Him.
*

*
2) Another idea would be to use a tarnished piece of silver and polish it while explaining how our Savior helps refine us – in the end the silver will shine.

RESOURCES FOR TALK PREPARATION
*
The process to create diamonds is completely natural. The diamonds start out as a simple piece of coal, until a molten rock heats pure carbon under tremendous pressure. This causes the diamond crystals to be formed. Volcanic activity will, over time, push the diamonds to the earth’s surface, where they can be found buried in the earth. The diamonds still have to get cleaned and polished before they shine.
*
The  Lord’s Pattern for Peace, Elder Christoffel Golden Jr., Ensign April 2008
“Then, as I looked at his almost transparent countenance, I recalled many of the small and great deeds he had done. It was in the small deeds that I discovered the greater joy. Through his renewed life of submission and service, this noble servant of the Lord had received the approval of heaven. He was no longer a rough diamond but rather a refined, polished shaft.
*
Opposition in Order to Strengthen Us, Eldred G. Smith, General Conference October 1973
“We all have our trials of life to strengthen us. Each thinks he has the hardest or most severe trials. It may be that they are the most difficult only because they are the hardest or most difficult for you. The diamond is enhanced and made more valuable with polishing. Steel is made harder and more valuable through tempering. So also opposition builds the character of man.”
*
James E Faust uses the story of a man’s search for diamonds to teach a few different lessons:
Happiness and Our Search For Happiness, James E. Faust, Liahona October 2000
“How many times do we look for our happiness at a distance in space or time rather than right now, in our own homes, with our own families and friends?”
The Truth Shall Make You Free, James E. Faust, Liahona September 1998
“Where can truth be found?”

*
How Diamonds are Formed, National Geographic
As I watched this I was intrigued with the idea that once a diamond is formed beneath the earth’s surface, it still needs to be transported. Just as we need our Savior.
*
MUSICAL NUMBER SUGGESTIONS
*
Brie sang her first solo in public. She and one of our beehives sang “Daughter of a King“, by Jenny Phillips. They each sang a verse on their own and sang the chorus together. Brie was so nervous, but she did wonderful.
*
TAKE-A-WAY/GIFTS
*
After the program, the Young Women were directed to the back of the room. There they found two tables which were set-up with supplies for each of them to make their own “Be Strong and of Good Courage” tiles – because that was the mutual theme for 2010. (supplies: 4×4 tiles, prepared vinyl lettering, and Pampered Chef scrapers)

Girls Camp Treats

Downloaded from: http://ldsywideasandactivities.blogspot.com/2013/07/girls-camp-treats.html Our yw have girls camp this week and I wasn’t able to go :( , but I wanted to let the girls know I was thinking about them. My husband is going up for Bishopric night tonight, so I made some treats for the young women. Last year I made cookies, but this year we have one girl with a serious gluten allergy. So, while I could…

Your Once Upon A Time Is Now

Our 2013 Stake Young Women Camp Theme was: “Your Once Upon A Time Is Now”

*
INSPIRED BY

Your Happily Ever After, President Dieter F Uchtdorf
*

Your Once Upon A Time Is Now

*
“In most languages there exists a phrase as magical and full of promise as perhaps any in the world. That phrase is ‘Once upon a time.’ Aren’t those wonderful words to begin a story? ‘Once upon a time’ promises something: a story of adventure and romance, a story of princesses and princes. It may include tales of courage, hope, and everlasting love. In many of these stories, nice overcomes mean and good overcomes evil. But perhaps most of all, I love it when we turn to the last page and our eyes reach the final lines and we see the enchanting words ‘And they lived happily ever after.’ Isn’t that what we all desire: to be the heroes and heroines of our own stories, to triumph over adversity, to experience life in all its beauty, in the end, to live happily ever after?… Sisters, we love you. We pray for you. Be strong and of good courage. You are truly royal spirit daughters of Almighty God. You are princesses, destined to become queens. Your own wondrous story has already begun. Your ‘once upon a time’ is now.”

MONDAY
On the first night of camp we, as a Stake Young Women Presidency, shared a special experience (FHE) for the seniors. Our presentation was drawn from Disney’s “Snow White”. Note: I am not going to give all the details, just a simple synopsis. :)
*
Your Once Upon A Time Is Now
*
Fireside Introduction
Each girl received a booklet (mini composition book from DollarTree 3/1.00, the pages below were glued into the books beforehand) and a twig pencil to answer the questions at each “stop” along their journey with Snow White.

Your Once Upon A Time Is Now

*
It was explained that they were about to go on a journey with Snow White. A lantern (the light of Christ and/or the Holy Ghost) was provided for the group to follow as they traveled from one “stop” to the next. We lead them to 6 different locations set-up within camp. At each “stop” a question was presented. Next, there was a brief discussion/mini lesson lead by a member of the Stake YW Presidency. Then the question was presented again. The girls were given a few minutes to write their answers/thoughts in their booklets before traveling to their next destination. Here is a brief look at each “stop” along their journey with Snow White:

**
1. Mirror/Mirror – Self Esteem/Comparison

*

Your Once Upon A Time Is Now

*
The Queen looked to the Magic Mirror often asking the question, “Magic mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” She did not know of her own worth and needed to hear it from someone else.
*
Possible ResourcesFor Strength of Youth, Personal Progress: Individual Worth*

*
2. Wishing Well – Modesty/Dating/Sexual Purity
*

Your Once Upon A Time Is Now

*
Snow White stood at the wishing well, wishing and hoping for love. The Prince hears her and answers with “I have but one song,. One song, only for you. One heart tenderly beating, ever entreating, constant and true. One love that has possessed me. One love thrilling me through. One song my heart keeps singing. Of one love. Only for you.”
*
Possible Resources – For Strength of Youth: Dress and Appearance/Dating/Sexual Purity, Personal Progress: Virtue, Fishing for Piranhas

*
3. Dwarfs Cottage – Service/Work
*

Your Once Upon A Time Is Now

*
Snow White did not know who she was serving to begin with. She only knew that there was a need. As the Seven Dwarfs came to know her, as she cared for and served them, a relationship of friendship and love grew. Even Grumpy. :)
*
Possible Resources – For Strength of Youth: Service, Personal Progress: Good Works

*
4. The Huntsman – Integrity
*

Your Once Upon A Time Is Now

*
The Huntsman was given the task to find Snow White and kill her -bringing her heart back to the Queen in a box as proof. Knowing that he would most likely be killed if he did not complete the task, made the choice to let not only let Snow White live, but tell her of the Queen’s evil intentions.
*
Possible ResourcesFor Strength of Youth: Honesty and Integrity, Personal Progress: Integrity

*
5. Apples – Media/Entertainment
*

Your Once Upon A Time Is Now

*
The Evil Queen offered Snow White an apple promising, “One bite and all your dreams will come true”. There are baskets and baskets of both good and bad apples presented to us on a daily basis.

Note: Just for fun, there was a basket of apples for the girl to snack on at this “stop” on their journey.
*
Possible ResourcesFor Strength of Youth: Entertainment and Media, Personal Progress: Choice and Accountability
*

6. Glass Coffin – Atonement
*

Your Once Upon A Time Is Now

*
Snow White went into a sleeping death after taking a bite of the poisoned apple. Only true loves kiss would break the curse. When we find ourselves in situations where our spirits are sleeping, it is through the love of our Savior that we are awaken.
*
Possible ResourcesFor Strength of Youth: Repentance, Personal Progress: Faith, the song My Story by Lex de Azevedo, Please Take My Pain Away

*
Fireside Discussion and Wrap-Up
*

Your Once Upon A Time Is Now

*
The journey ended back at the bonfire. We discussed their journey here on earth and the many different paths and “stops” along the way. One of those being the temple. We talked about those things they have, which combined, create a wonderful map: the scriptures, words of the prophets, their patriarchal blessings, for strength of youth, personal progress, prayer and personal revelation. Their companions on this journey – their parents, family, good friends and leaders.  And their compass – the Holy Ghost.
*
Gift
Each girl was given a Scrabble tile necklace with a photo of the Salt Lake Temple – a reminder. :)

Highlights:

  • All Camp Activity – The first day of camp each girl was given a punch card. Throughout the week, if they chose to do so, they could work on Personal Progress and memorize a daily scripture. Little did they know that come Friday, each punch of the card would give them more ammunition for the flour war – which was held secret – on Friday. After the flour war was over and the winners were announced one of the YCL2 (seniors) had everyone gather in and sit down. She did a wonderful wrapping up the flour war and explaining the importance of being prepared to “defeat the dragon” – working on personal progress, scripture study, prayer, etc.

That would be Rock Canyon, which is located behind the Provo Temple.**I found this beautiful photo taken by Ashley. You can find her at Little Talks.*I used to spend a lot of time in that canyon, both alone…
