Sometimes it’s hard to come up with ideas to promote modesty in our young women that don’t involve bashing them. Sister Tanner asked leaders in the Fall 2004 Leadership talk, Let the Fire of the Covenant Burn in Your Hearts, to stop teaching modesty by using the bad example, rather, we should “teach the good by showing the good.”

Modest by Design has a annual fashion show to promote their modest formals. We took our young women to this show today, and it was FABULOUS!

You can participate in the modest fashion show regardless of where you live by designing and submitting a modest dress design in their annual competition held October-November. Girls (or groups of them) may submit dress designs along with an essay about modesty — winners and runners-up receive gift certificates to the store, and the Grand Prize is having your dress design made by the Modest by Design team, along with all the accessories!!! (Among the winners at today’s competition was a girl from Japan!) You can read more at their website:

This would make a GREAT Personal Progress 10-hour project, or a great combined activity, or even a mutual activity idea. I especially like the fact that an essay is required with each entry — that makes the girls think about why modesty is so important, and it follows the pattern set in the Personal Progress books:

    1) Make a goal.
    2) Take action to achieve that goal.
    3) Report on what you learned.

Hope this is of use to some of you!

I’ve just added a new Teaching Modesty article to the Young Women’s section. It has activity ideas, object lessons, articles, visual aids, quotes, and links to sites that sell modest clothing and modest formals.
