This would have been great for #dandc58 26-28. Can anyone think of another section this could apply since I am past that section? #compassion #judgement #service
This could go well with #DandC81…where we are talking about the role of the First Presidency or Stake Presidency and Bishoprics and then it talks about presidency callings throughout the ward…maybe I’m stretching it, but when these people are put into these callings, do we support them and help them with their calling? Or do we only support those that we like? We are called upon to sustain these leaders within our wards and stakes, but do we truly support them when they need us to? Also for counselors to support the Bishop and help him do his calling in the best way possible. And for any presidency to have the help they need from their counselors in helping them do their calling the best way possible…DandC81:5 “Wherefore, be faithful; stand in the office which I have appointed unto you; succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees.” Thank you for posting this video…I think I will use it for this lesson.

The conference talk, “Are We Not All Beggars” came to mind when I watched this video. www.lds.org/general-conference/2014/10/are-we-not-all-beggars?lang=eng

I almost couldn’t finish watching it, made me extremely sad. :(
I felt the same way!

Susan Kendrick thank you for the idea to use this for section 81. I used it today with the last section in the lesson manual about helping the poor. I started with this video and the kids had a hard time watching it. They were whispering about why no one was helping the homeless man. Then we focused a discussion on the lesson ideas for v 4-5. We then watched www.lds.org/general-conference/2014/10/are-we-not-all-beggars?lang=eng . The spirit was so strong and after we talked about what our impressions were while watching the video. One student who has been really struggling commented that he felt the spirit when Elder H was testifying of the importance of helping one another and at that moment he understood why the youth were asked to participate in service projects. It was such a huge win today. A student who was struggling, felt the spirit, recognized what he was feeling and then bore testimony of that in front of the other students… Boom!

{Primary} Teacher Birthday Gifts

When I served in the Primary Presidency several years ago the President found ‘coupons’ to give to the teachers on their birthday.
The coupons were for a ‘Sunday Off’ so that they could go to Relief Society/Priesthood.

Well, I’m back in Primary and asked the President if we could do something similar for our wonderful teachers.
Today I would like to share what I created for our teachers.

{Primary} Teacher Birthday Gifts

I began by searching for ideas on Pinterest (gotta love Pinterest!). I was on the search for Birthday Gift ideas for the teachers as well as ‘Thank You’ ideas for substitutes (post & printables to come soon).
As I was scrolling through Pinterest I came across a cute printable (found HERE) for a Kit Kat bar. The printable was for school teachers and it wrapped around the entire bar, but I liked the phrase on the printable ‘You Deserve a Break’.

I decided to use the ‘Kit Kat’ idea along with the coupon for our gifts.

{Primary} Teacher Birthday Gifts

I saw a few different versions of the ‘coupon’ on Pinterest, here is one teacher appreciation coupon on Sugardoodle. I decided to change a few things, so I got to work creating my own coupon and a tag for the Kit Kat.

Here is the finished product! What do you think?
{Primary} Teacher Birthday Gifts

I had some clear plastic boxes that I thought would work great. I decided to use the Kit Kat miniatures and added a few to the box and then wrapped the box with some twine (ribbon or string would work great too). I punched a hole in the ‘Need a Break’ tag and tied that on to the string. Then I slipped the coupon underneath the string.

You could also buy the full size candy bars and place the coupon on top and tie some string/ribbon around it and add the tag.
No matter what you do I’m sure your Primary teachers will love it! Because who wouldn’t like chocolate and a Sunday off?!?

Today I am sharing my Teacher Coupon Printables with you!
Just click the links below to download & print.

And to all you amazing primary teachers out there…Thank you for all you do.

“No greater responsibility can rest upon any man [or woman],

than to be a teacher of God’s Children.”

{Pres. David O. McKay}

You may feel like your calling isn’t as great or as important as some other callings, but I think yours is the greatest. :)

Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a wonderful day!

New Beginnings 2015- Embark Airlines

By JOLLY ROGERS Our New Beginnings theme was “Embark Airlines” – this idea of a pretend flight has been used in a variety of ways in different organizations over the years, and others have done this same thing this year to go along with our youth theme, so I am borrowing heavily from many sources that I can’t pinpoint. New Beginnings 2015- Embark Airlines

Our New Beginnings theme was “Embark Airlines” – this idea of a pretend flight has been used in a variety of ways in different organizations over the years, and others have done this same thing this year to go along with our youth theme, so I am borrowing heavily from many sources that I can’t pinpoint. Basically, we put on a fake airplane flight in our chapel overflow room. All current YW participated and all 11 year old girls who turn 12 this year and their parents were invited to attend. Everyone was excited to do something out of the ordinary for New Beginnings this year!

We sent personalized airline ticket invitations to each incoming beehive. I also posted this advertisement on Facebook.

New Beginnings 2015- Embark Airlines

The YW were very involved in the planning. All class presidency members became flight-attendants. They planned all of this themselves (how they would look like flight attendants, who had which assignments, etc). Our girls decided to wear scarves, make name tags, and wear black skirts or pants so that they all looked uniform. One girl took “tickets” at the door and passed out programs. Another girl passed out YW theme cards, FTSOY books, and barf-bags that we had made (brown paper sacks that said “barf bag” – just for fun, but they could also use them to carry home their handouts). Another girl demonstrated the emergency procedures. The others passed out the refreshments (peanuts & water that we had decorated and assembled during the previous Mutual).

Here are some of our flight attendants and a close-up of the name tags. Sorry, I don’t have any of these saved to share with you, but I made everything on picmonkey site, like I always do and its very easy to create your own printables and/or postables.

Chairs were arranged in the overflow like an airplane would be, with a row down the middle. My Counselor and I sat up in the front (facing the group) and acted as pilot & co-pilot. I used a microphone to sound more “legit” as I conducted from the “cockpit”. See my script at the bottom of this post.

Although all of the other young women were passengers, we assigned all of them at least one job as well. Here is the program we used (most of the blanks were filled by non-class-presidency-member yw because the flight attendants were busy with their duties):

Thank you for flying Embark Airlines! We hope you will enjoy embarking in the service of God and serving him with all your heart, might, mind, and strength!

  • For the In-Flight Entertainment, we had asked some of the current YW to come forward and share their favorite Mutual activity, Sunday lesson, or just their favorite thing about YW in general.
  • For the Introduction to the 2015 youth theme, I printed portions of the youth theme scripture (Doctrine & Covenants 4:2) on different pieces of paper. The Beehive Class came up and were handed the stack of papers and times to see how fast they could work as a group to put the papers in the right order (16 seconds!). When they were done, we all read the scripture together out loud.
  • The In-Flight Movie “O Ye that Embark” is available on lds.org in the youth section here. It is the 2015 youth theme song video. Its only about 4 minutes long, but its really powerful.
  • Also, NOT LISTED IN THE PROGRAM that we handed out, we had a surprise (planned) late-arrival of a YW with large amounts of luggage who (comically) kept trying to stow her bags in the (non-existent)overheard compartments or shove them under peoples seats. This was just for fun and was a big hit.
See the script below for full details of the program…..

FLIGHT SCRIPT (# indicates a pause because of a presentation, or just a pause for effect):

Good evening passengers. This is your captain speaking. On behalf of myself and my co-pilot ___________________, I’d like to welcome everyone to Embark Airlines, where we will be traveling nonstop to New Beginnings, departing in just a few minutes…

#

ladies and gentlemen, it seems that we have a late arrival – a passenger from a connecting flight is running down the fairway, so we’re going to stop for her – and that will mean a short delay in our departure, but we will be getting underway in just a few minutes…

# (pause while late-passenger enters & performs)

If the flight attendants could please prepare the cabin for departure, we have one brief announcement. if you look to the right of the plane, you’ll see that ______________________(insert any YW announcements here) ______________________

Before we take off, we will begin with an in-flight opening song “Put your Shoulder to the Wheel”. __________________ will be our chorister, followed by a prayer given by _______________. After the song and prayer, please relax and enjoy the rest of the flight.

#

Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the flight crew I ask that you please direct your attention to the the flight attendants as we review the emergency procedures. Should the cabin experience sudden pressure loss, stay calm and listen for instructions from the cabin crew. Oxygen masks will drop down from above your seat. Place the mask over your mouth and nose, like this. Pull the strap to tighten it. If you are traveling with small children, make sure that your own mask is on first before helping your children. In the unlikely event of an emergency landing and evacuation, leave your carry-on items behind. We ask that you make sure that all carry-on luggage is stowed away safely during the flight. Most importantly, Please remember to keep your heart, might, mind and strength in the upright and locked position.

If you are a first-time flier, please refer to your pink YW theme handout. At this time, I am turning off the fasten seat belts sign so that everyone may stand and join us in reciting the YW Theme. Flight attendants, please lead the passengers in reciting the YW theme.

#

The captain is turning on the fasten seatbelts sign, Please return to your seats.

#

At this time, we invite  ___________________ to come to the front of the aircraft to introduce our first-time fliers.

#

Next, we invite _____________________________ to come to the front of the aircraft to introduce our frequent fliers.

#

Ladies and gentlemen, we ask that you remain seated as our flight attendants will be coming through the cabin with a light snack.

#

At this time, we invite ______________   ________________   _____________  ________________   _______________  to come to the front of the aircraft to tell us their favorite thing about being in YW

#

At this time, we invite the current Beehive Class members to present the 2015 youth theme.

#

For tonight’s in-flight movie, we will be showing the short film “O ye that embark”. We hope that you enjoy it.

#

Ladies and gentlemen, please direct your attention to the front of the aircraft for an official statement from the Air-Marshal

#

As we begin our descent back to the _____________________________ Ward Airport,  we’d like to thank you for being part of our New Beginnings Event tonight. We hope that you will enjoy being a part of the Young Womens Organization and all that it has to offer. Not only do we have fun, but we also learn important skills, give meaningful service, and grow our personal testimonies. We hope that you will join us again as soon, as soon as you turn 12.

On behalf of the flight crew, we would know like to wish you a closing prayer by ________________________

{Sharing Time} Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ Love Me

ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING: Have the pianist play the first two notes of a song that teaches about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ’s love for us, and have the children guess the song. Add one note at a time until the children guess correctly. Sing the song together and then discuss what the song teaches about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ’s love for us. List the children’s ideas on the board. Repeat with each song. Consider using the following songs: “My Heavenly Father Loves Me” (CS, 228–29), “Thanks to Our Father” (CS, 20), “I Feel My Savior’s Love” (CS, 74–75), and “I Am a Child of God” (CS, 2–3).

ENCOURAGE APPLICATION: Give each child a piece of paper and have them draw one way they know that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love them. You may want to refer the children to the ideas you listed on the board in the activity above. Tape the pictures together, and display them in a roller box (see TNGC, 178–79) or unroll them as you would a scroll. As the children watch, have the pianist play one of the songs listed above.

ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING AND APPLICATION: Write some examples of ways that Heavenly Father shows His love for us and ways we show our love for Him on separate pieces of paper. Put the pieces of paper in a container, and have a child pull them out one at a time. Read each one aloud. If it is something that shows Heavenly Father’s love for us, have the children stretch one arm upward. If it shows our love for Heavenly Father, have them put their hands over their heart.

Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

I am sharing some fun ideas that you can use over the next 2 weeks for Sharing Time. I used a great idea from this month’s Friend as one of the activities. To read the whole article click HERE.

Enjoy!
{Sharing Time} Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ Love Me

Before Primary cut out a large heart. You can leave the heart as is or you can write:

‘How do you know Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love you?’

Just like the ‘Encourage Understanding’ in the outline, pick a song and have the pianist play the first few notes of the song. Keep adding notes until a child guesses what the song is.

Explain to the children that there are many songs that teach us about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ’s love for us.

Show the children the heart that you have cut out and tell them that you are going to play ‘Hot & Cold’. One child will go out of the room while another child hides the heart.

The child that is out of the room will come into the room. The remaining children will begin singing a song (preferably the one you played at the beginning). As the child gets closer to the heart have the children sing louder and as they move further from the heart have them sing quietly.

Once the child finds the heart have them share a way that they know Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ love them.

Write the answer on the board and then pick a new child to hunt for a heart.

Another Idea:

You could cut out several hearts and leave them blank. As the children answer how they know Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ love them, write the answer on the heart. String the hearts onto a ribbon or string to make a heart banner. After all the children have had a turn, hang up the hearts somewhere in the Primary room for all the children to see.

Remind the children that our Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ love them very much.

Encourage Understanding & Application

I was looking through this month’s Friend and saw an idea that would be great for this section of the Sharing Time Outline. You could do the above idea for the 3rd week and save this idea for the 4th week.

Write 4-5 examples of ways that Heavenly Father shows His love for us and ways we show our love for Him on separate pieces of paper.
{Sharing Time} Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ Love Me
Create a Punch-A-Box {picture below} and place each piece of paper inside the cups of the punch-a-box. Click HERE to read how to make a Punch-A-Box.
Invite a child up to the front and have them punch a box and read the slip of paper aloud.

If it is something that shows Heavenly Father’s love for us, have the children stretch one arm upward. If it shows our love for Heavenly Father, have them put their hands over their heart.

Helping Hands
Explain to the children that when Jesus was on the earth, He loved and served everyone. We

can follow His example today and show our love for Jesus by serving others.

In this month’s Friend they had a challenge for all the children. They are collecting ‘helping hands’ and are asking all the children to help them out. Here is what it says in The Friend:

“How many helping hands can we collect this year? Do

a good deed and help us find out!

1.   Trace your hand on a piece of paper and cut it out.

2. Write about how you followed Jesus by serving someone—or

about how someone served you. It can be something big or small.”

Explain to the children that today they are going to make some helping hands and send them to The Friend.

You will need pieces of paper and crayons/markers for each child…and some adult helpers. :)

Have the children trace their hands and write some service that they have done.

Once everyone is finished have a few children share what their helping hand says.

Remind the children that our Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ love us and that we can show our love for them by serving others.

I hope you enjoy my Sharing Time ideas for this week as well as the children in your Primary.
Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a wonderful day & a great Sharing Time!
