I read some fun ideas for communicating with YW using technology today. On all of these, be sure to include YW that don’t have cell phones, email, or whatever by calling them on a landline telephone or sending them a paper copy by snail mail:

    Quote:

I text message them on their phones. Most of he yw in my ward have cell phones and are obssessed with text messaging. So I thought I would text message them to remind them about activities and when I know about things in their lives like a big test I will text them a good luck. The girls love it and a couple of the moms have mentioned it to me that their daughters think it is fun that I text them and that they can text me anytime.

A note on this – you can send text messages from your email address, so a cell phone is not required. This means you can send the same (VERY SHORT) msg to cell phones and email addresses in one shot.

    Quote:

We are starting to use e-mail as another medium for communicating with the girls in our YW program. It is not an ‘instead of’… it is an ‘in addition to’. Besides alerting/reminding them about activities etc., I want to send them something fun or thought-provoking each week as a cyber-hug/we’re thinking about you type of thing. Just something simple… not anything really elaborate.

    Quote:

I have the girls fill in a questionaire a few times a year to update their phone numbers, email addresses and how often they check their email. With cell phones, I also ask if they can get text messages, for when I want to send a note or reminder.

    Quote:

Just be careful to make sure that you email ALL the girls, or a group of them plus some other leaders or parents. Never send an email to just one girl without copying to at least one more adult. For the same reasons that Scouts have two-deep leadership – just to be safe.

This raises two good points: 1) Be careful and selective about what you send and 2) Include parents. If you send reminders, also send to parent(s)’s emails, too, so that parents can make arrangements for transportation or scheduling. It also helps when parents know what is going on and can ask follow up questions, or they may even plan a follow-up FHE to reinforce lessons taught at firesides, mutual, and other activites.
