From a post I wrote on a newsgroup:
I can understand the problem — I mean — when teachers are using a cute handout instead of the lesson materials provided by the church, there’s lots of potential problems, including doctrinal ones.
But you’re right, every handout sent home doesn’t have to come straight from the Friend. The handouts found in the Friend may not support the emphasis we are inspired to place on a lesson (though often they do).
At any rate you may like this link: I Will Follow … Me
It’s the Sharing Time Planning Worksheet from the I Will Follow Me booklet. You’ll notice there’s no mention of the Friend. Nor is there any mention of the Friend in the I Will Follow Me lesson plan. Instead, scripture references and several lessons from the Primary manuals are used as the resources for lesson planning. Those materials should be the basis of every lesson, not just the Friend. The Friend is just a list of helpful suggestions for teachers who may struggle with putting together a lesson from those materials.
We do and MUST stick very closely to the materials provided by the church for doctrinal safety during lesson presentations, but using an inspired handout or coloring sheet from a CD or book is fine in most
cases.
