Young Women in Excellence and Skits for Recognition Night

I'm compiling some Young Women in Excellence / Recognition Night programs here. Do you have LDS Young Women scripts or ideas? Share them here, and they'll automatically get added to the list below!

From the New Handbook

Young Women in Excellence is an event in which young women are recognized for the good things they are doing. It is a celebration of Personal Progress. Each young woman shares a value experience or value project she has completed during the year that exhibits excellence. Her presentation may include talents and skills she has developed through her Personal Progress goals. Young Women leaders invite parents to attend.

At the beginning of the year, leaders encourage each young woman to give serious thought to the values she might focus on for this event. She may work with a family member, another young woman, or others on the projects, which may take several months to complete.

This event is usually held during Mutual at the ward level, but it may be held at the stake level. Adult leaders include the young women in planning it. The date and plans for the event should be announced early in the year. (Church Handbook of Instructions: Young Women in Excellence, 10.8.4)

YWIE FAQ

Do you have questions about how to plan this activity? Here are some tips:

What is the purpose of YWIE?

YWIE is a celebration of the Personal Progress program. During this meeting young women share the projects or experiences they've had with personal progress during this year. Those young women who have completed the program could be asked to help encourage others by sharing their testimony and experience with the program.

This is also a good time to introduce parents to the Honor Bee and encourage mothers to earn Personal Progress Awards with their daughters.

When is Young Women in Excellence held?

If your unit is able to hold regular mutual/weekly activities, YWIE is typically held during that regular meeting. Other units plan it for a time convenient for their members. Typically this meeting is held in Autumn for calendaring reasons. New Beginnings is held at the beginning of the year.

Who attends YWIE?

The new handbook states Young Women ages 12 and up at the time of the Activity and their parents. No other specific direction is given, but I'm sure other people (guest speakers, children, priesthood leaders, etc.) may also be invited. This isn't a ward activity open to everyone, however.

User-submitted YWIE ideas

Ants Activity / Leadership Training

Kim A. says, "I attached a program I compiled for a mutual night activity, it could be adopted to be a YW New Beginnings."

Uses an ant theme like "excell-ants" or "obedie-ants" to teach valuable leadership characteristics. I think this would make a good leadership lesson theme or could possibly be adapted for YW in Excellence.

Beehive / Bee Headband Craft

Reese Dixon's Bee Hairband is my favorite of her headband ideas! "...Beehives are right on that cusp where you can still get away with something pretty cute. Which is a good thing, because I could not come up with a way to make a beehive fashionable. Versions of this ribbon bee are floating around the internet all over the place, but here's how I made mine...."

Her "crowning" idea would make a fun YW in Excellence.

Free LDS Sheet Music - Believe in Me by Mary Noble Cavenee

Beautiful music that could be used for camp, YWIE, New Beginnings, or other activity. "I was asked to find a song for our Stake Young Women’s 2009 camp theme: 'Believe in Me' last December. I thought I would find an EFY song or Hymn… but felt impressed when they asked me in January of what I was going to do…I told them: 'I think I am going to write a song'... "

This collection of ideas uses a frog theme and has lots of cute ideas for food and handouts. Also includes quotes and a leadership lesson.

I think this might be altered for a cute Enrichment Activity, too.

How to Pass off a Value Experience at YW in Excellence

Personal Progress Value Experience Individual Worth 7 is especially good for Young Women in Excellence. Read it below:

Individual Worth 7:

Heavenly Father has given you special gifts. Read 1 Corinthians 12:4–12; 13; Moroni 7:12–13; 10:8–18; and Doctrine and Covenants 46:11–26. Ask a family member, a Young Women leader, and a friend to write down positive qualities the Lord has given you. List your gifts in your journal, and write how you can continue to develop these gifts and use them to serve your family and others.

How to implement it...

STEP ONE: For a mutual activity, invite the girls to write one positive quality God has given each of their classmates.

New Beginnings Flower Headband Craft - Mia Maids

Reese Dixon came up with this super cute idea for making an easy, inexpensive headband for the YW in her group.

"When I was only responsible for the laurels, I came up with a little something to make for them to welcome advancing Mia Maids into our class. Now that I'm responsible for everyone, I had to come up with something to welcome advancing Beehives into the Mia Maid class, and primary girls into the Beehive class. ... "

New Beginnings Headband Craft - Laurels

Reese Dixon shares her idea on how to make a Laurel-themed headband: "...I decided that when the girls in my ward turn 16 and enter my class, we should have a little ceremony in opening exercises where we crown them with a laurel wreath and then all the rest of the Laurels give them hugs and air kisses.

"Souper" Young Women

I created this label to go around an empty can. It's a little bit long to fit around a standard Campbells soup can. A vegetable can works better. We used it for our Young Women in Excellence program with the theme of "Souper" Young Women. We filled the can with treats and a wooden spoon tied with a red and white gingham bow and added a message on the spoon that said "Stay "stirred up" about Personal Progress. It will warm your soul when you accomplish your goals." We served homemade soup and rolls to the girls and parents.

What Makes You Beautiful

I am sure you have seen at least one of these videos made by a few young men groups across the nation, in response to President Thomas S. Monson saying that "every woman deserves to be told she's beautiful."*I would love to see a music video like this made by an Elder's Quorm or High Priest Group.  President Monson did say "every woman"... he did not specify age, right?  ;)*Original inspiration: Citrus Heights Young Men*The same group of young men made this video, as commissioned, for girls camp. :)*Colorado Spring North Young Men

Wizard of Oz Young Women in Excellence

We did a Wizard of Oz "there's no place like our Heavenly Home" themed Young Women in Excellence program. We used hot air balloon centerpieces, flying monkey placemats, melted witch cupcakes and punch, ding dongs, and a rainbow of fruit. We used tissue paper pompoms in rainbow colors above the values for the Personal Progress projects, with a yellow brick road, etc. My blog has more details:

Question Oct 28 2013

Young Women in Excellence

I am having trouble accessing the files under the Young Women in Excellence tab.  When I click on the link, it takes me to a page which gives handbook instructions on how to hold YWIE, but nothing else.  I am specifically looking for files I saw about a week ago relating to "The Worth of Soles."

Thanks.

Young Women In Excellence - Seek the Sweet

The young women in our ward were REALLY excited about our theme for YW in excellence this year. We decided upon "Seek the Sweet"...A "Candy Theme" that focused on all things "sweet" to the young and their lives. For the program each of the girls talked about the "Sweetness of the Young Woman Values" (For instance, one girl spoke on the "sweetness of faith" one girl spoke on the "sweetness of virtue", and so on.) After the girls had shared their experiences, I wrapped up the evening by talking about 3 thing we can do as YW to "Seek the Sweet". 1.

YWIE Everything I Need to Know About Life I Learned in YW

Kim A. shared this cute idea that I think is perfect for YWIE. The girls dress up in school girl attire -- pig tails and black and white uniform clothing. The room is decorated like a class room, and the girls' displays were of the same theme with explanations written on that second grade lined paper.

YWIE Garden of Girls

Kim A says, "This could be used for a New Beginnings or a Young Women In Excellence. We decorated with a garden theme, brought in a birdbath, garden arch and lots of ivy and silk flowers everywhere. We also did the usual thing of dragging in the ficus trees from the foyer into our room. 2 weeks before we called and asked each father (or mother) to please think of what flower best fit their daughter and to explain on an index card why. This took a lot of reminding but the end result was so worth it!

We recently had a wonderful

We recently had a wonderful YWIE night. We had a Young Women in Excellenc Bowl. We got T-shirts in each value color, and made jersey's for each girl. We made a football field with a green table cloth and masking tape for the goal lines. In between the goal post was a huge picture of the temple. When the girls were introduced, they broke through a huge paper sign. Each girl was announced as if in a starting line up, and ran up and down giving each other high fives. Decorations were penants in the value colors, pom poms, football equipment. The young women leaders dressed as coaches and cheerleaders, and the bishop was the referee. We then had a talk that tied it all together, comparing the game of football, to the game of life. Each time you accomplish a goal, you get a first down. We had foam #1 hands, penants, and pom poms for the parents to wave. The girls were told their parents were there biggest fans. For refreshments, we served chips and dip, popcorn, nuts, and soda. We really had a great night.
