Brigham Bucks

Brigham Bucks is the Seminary incentive program used by Seminary Mom, but you can use them for Seminary, Primary reverence incentives, youth activities, and much more.  Last year I used tickets for our March Madness auction, but this year I am using these bucks because tickets are just too expensive for my class of 16.  I'm hoping to laminate and reuse these Brigham Bucks next year.

Make Your Own "Brass" Plates

Make your own brass plates

I did this activity with my CTR 8 class years ago. It's a fun craft that helps students really think about why certain things are included in the scriptures and to practice writing their testimony.

Gather Your Materials


For this craft, you'll need

  • Scissors that you don't mind cutting metal with
  • copper flashing
  • sharp edge (counter top or piece of wood with right edges)
  • a pair of pliers
  • a piece of scrap 2x4
  • a large nail, craft stick, or pencil with the sharpened tip broken off

The Prayer Bucket

A veteran Seminary teacher told me about this method of choosing prayers for class that helps avoid having the same few kids volunteer to pray each day. I have used a similar method in Young Womens classes, too, and it works beautifully.

You'll need :
- a wooden Popsicle-style craft stick for every person in your class (plus some extras in case you get move-ins)
- red and green paint or markers
- a container to hold the completed items

I went to Walmart and bought the wide craft sticks and some green and red paint. The cool little bucket came from Target and it cost around $2.50. (You could, of course, mark one end with a black marker or something if you didn't have paint.)

Please also note that this list is not yet grouped by book (Bible, BoM, etc). That is actually a pretty technically tricky exercise, and one that I'm not up to right now. Books are listed out of order.

What to do with old Camp and Scout T-Shirts (Sew and No-Sew T-Shirt Bags)

Can someone help me locate an article?

CAN ANYONE HELP ME?? In the january 2010 Ensign issue, in the back there was a comment by an unknown woman about her incarcerated husband. She gave no year or month of this article. It was in reference of her incarcerated spouse. I have a problem in my fMILY AND NEED IT DESPERATLY....

Splitting Students into Teams to Learn the Gospel

Seminary Mom likes to split her classes into groups for gospel learning. Here's how she taught 3 Nephi 11 over the course of two days, while splitting into groups for researching the scripture topic:

Today was a special day as we began our study of 3 Nephi 11, the crowning moment in the Book of Mormon.

I know that the suggested teaching schedule recommends teaching 3 Nephi 11 in one day. But we are also to pray and consider the needs of our students as we approach our teaching schedule.

Are you Paying Attention?

Display a picture of a bird and a quarter. Then tell the following story:

Two men were walking down a busy city street. The one asked the other, "Listen to that bird." "I don't hear a bird," the other replied. "No, you must listen harder." The second individual listened very carefully and after a few seconds, he finally heard the bird amongst the hustle of the street.

The first individual asked, "Do you think THEY hear the bird?" The second man looked around at the rushing pedestrians racing past them. "No, probably not." "Now watch this." The first gentleman flipped a quarter, allowing it to fall to the ground. Scads of people stopped and looked for the fallen coin. "Amazing," came the reply of the second man.

The Importance of Following Directions

Then to give a break from the reading (and to rouse the sleepy-headed students), I passed out a "3-Minute Test." This was a quick little quiz to test "obedience" and precision to directions.

You can easily make your own. Start off by announcing that they are to read through the entire test before doing anything. But then have a series of at least 20 "commandments", like writing their name on the paper, standing and twirling in a circle, answering a math problem in the corner of the page, etc. THEN have as the final direction on the page (number 20 or so), "Do none of the above."

Scripture, Scripture, Who Has the Scripture

SCRIPTURE SCRIPTURE, WHO HAS THE SCRIPTURE?

Announce to the class that we're playing a game called, "Scripture, Scripture, Who Has the Scripture?" Someone has hidden essential clues to eternal life and we are the detectives, finding those clues. On the chalkboard/whiteboard, prior to class, print on the board the key words to the scripture masteries that need review. Then cover the word clues with a series of cut-out black footprints.

At the end of the black footprints, there is one gold key taped to the board.

Rather than playing this in teams (as I sorely discovered), have them play as a class as a whole.

A Spiritual Feast - Using a multi-day scripture teaching theme

Seminary Mom used lunch sacks to emphasize the importance of the material in 3 Nephi -- truly a spiritual feast. Kids in her class added notecards to their lunch sacks each day during the lesson to add to their feast. It's a great example of how to carry a theme over multiple days for lesson continuity. Below is her description of how it worked.

This theme could be adapted to a number of lesson types, including Family Home Evening and even Sunday lessons or Mutual.
