{Sharing Time} Repentance brings Forgiveness

Introduce the doctrine: Invite the children to open their scriptures and read Doctrine and Covenants 58:42–43. Ask them to identify what happens when we repent of our sins. (If possible, invite the children to mark these verses in their scriptures.) Briefly tell the children about Enos (see Enos 1:1–4), and have a child read Enos 1:5–8. Testify that the Atonement of Christ makes it possible for us to be forgiven of our sins.

Encourage understanding: Explain that people who have repented and have been forgiven of their sins have a desire to serve God. Divide the children into three groups, and give each group one of the following pictures and scripture references: Alma baptizing in the Waters of Mormon (Mosiah 17:2–4; 18:1–17); Jonah (Jonah 1–3); the Anti-Nephi-Lehies burying their swords (Alma 23:4–18; 24:6–19). Explain that these stories tell about people who repented of their sins and served the Lord. Ask each group to review the scriptures and prepare and present a role play showing how these people repented and then served the Lord (by teaching the gospel, serving a mission, and refusing to fight).

I really love this visual that my husband did for a FHE just a couple weeks ago on repentance and I’d like to share with you!

It’s time to raid your kitchen!

First you’ll need 4 separate bowls (nothing fancy). I would also like recommend a cookie sheet to minimize the accidental mess that may happen.

In 2 of these bowls you will need “sticky items”. My husband used food colored yogurt and caramel syrup.
In 1 bowl put crushed cereal or crackers. My husband used crushed cereal.
In the last bowl put in plain water.

Begin the lesson with a story about a sin. Here’s what my husband did:

Sammy and his mom were at the store and he saw a candy that was one of his favorites. He asked his mom if he could have it, she said “not this time, Sammy”. Sammy wanted it so bad so he grabbed it and put it into his pocket when his mom wasn’t looking. (Dip your hand into one of your sticky items) On the way home, Sammy was sitting in his seat and couldn’t wait to eat his candy. As soon as he gets home he runs to his room and starts eating the candy. His mom knocks on his door and comes in to ask for his help unloading the car. Mom sees the candy on Sammy’s bed and asks where he got it from. Sammy says that he got it from school. (Dip your hand in the other sticky item)
*You can mention how after you’ve put your hand into your 2nd item that the first sticky is still there and now in the second one.
After mom left Sammy grinned to himself  “I got away with it!” The next time Sammy and his mom went to the store he stole two candy bars. (Dip hand into the dry item)
* How would you feel after not making these choices like Sammy? How can Sammy become clean again after making these mistakes?

It is through the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the repentance process that Sammy and us are able to be forgiven of our mistakes.  (Wash off hand in the water)

Here’s the Jumbo Cut-outs for the 3 scripture stories in the encourage portion of the outline: Alma & the Waters, Jonah, and the Anti-Nephi-Lehies and I’ve made them into a bundle for a great price!
Glue/tape the pieces on sticks for a fun way to retell the story. When you divide the Primary give an envelope with the scripture references and the story pieces. When the kids present the stories let them use the pieces to share the stories with the rest of the Primary.

{Sharing Time} Through The Atonement Of Jesus Christ, All Mankind May Be Saved. (Part 2)

Sharing Time Idea from the 2015 Outline

Encourage application:Invite the children to read Alma 7:11–12 and look for what Jesus has done for us. Ask a few children to share what they found. Tell the children that Jesus understands when we feel hurt, sad, afraid, or sick. He can help us overcome these things. Write the following statements on the board:
I am grateful for the Savior because ___________.

The Savior will help me to ___________.

Invite a few children to share how they would finish these sentences, or have all of the children share their answers with the person sitting next to them.

Encourage understanding:Tell the children that there are many stories in the scriptures of people who were blessed because of the Atonement. Share a few of these stories. Possible stories include Alma the Younger (see Alma 36:5–27), Paul (see Acts 8:1–3; 9:1–20), and Enos (see Enos 1:1–8). After telling a story, review it with the children. Toss a crumpled piece of paper to one child and ask him or her to say one thing about the story. Have the child toss the paper back to you. Continue until the children have mentioned most of the important details from the story. Share your testimony about the Atonement.

Sharing Time Idea from Little LDS Ideas

Weeks 2 & 3 in February share the same Sharing Time topic. I decided to split the idea given in the outline into 2 parts. To view my first Sharing Time idea (part 1) just click HERE. Today I am sharing Part 2.
For this Sharing Time idea I created a popsicle ‘pick’ game that I think the children will enjoy.


Sharing Time Preparation:
Before Primary download and cut out my popsicle stick toppers. There are 6 total (2 pages). On the front of each circle you will see the topic of the week:

“Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all mankind may be saved.”

On the back of the circles are the two phrases from the outline:

I am grateful for the Savior because ___________.

The Savior will help me to ___________.

and the 3 scriptures from the outline:

Alma the Younger (see Alma 36:5–27)

Paul (see Acts 8:1–3; 9:1–20)

Enos (see Enos 1:1–8)

 After you have cut out each circle you will attach them to a popsicle stick. Glue one popsicle stick to one of the backs of the circles and then place another circle on top.
  

Place each of the 6 popsicles sticks in a jar or container.
You will also need a picture from the Gospel Art Kit of each person that they will be learning about {Alma, Paul, Enos}.

And one more item….you will need to create a large die. A square box would be great. Just cover with paper and label each side with a number or dots (1-6).
You can always use a small die from a game, but the children always enjoy rolling a big one. :)


 Sharing Time:
Begin by asking if anyone remembers what they learned last week. You could recite the 3rdArticle of Faith again or just ask what they remember.
After you have discusses last week’s Sharing Time, read Alma 7:11-12. Invite the children to listen for what Jesus has done for us. Have them raise their hand, stand up, thumbs up, etc. when they hear an answer. Ask a few children to share what they found. You can write the answers on a chalkboard, to help the children remember.

Tell the children that Jesus understands when we feel hurt, sad, afraid, or sick. He can help us overcome these things.

Show the children your container of popsicle sticks. Explain to the children that on the back of each stick is a question or a scripture reference. They will be rolling a die to determine which popsicle stick they will choose.

Invite the first child up to the front and have them roll the die. Then have them pick the appropriate stick that matches the number on the die. The #6 popsicle stick can say ‘Roll Again’ or ‘Your Choice’ or some other fun phrase for the children to do.

If the child lands on one of the ‘finish the phrase’… Invite him/her to share how they would finish the sentence.

If they land on one with a scripture reference have them hold the picture and read the story/scripture about that particular person.

Another idea:You could also give them a few clues to read aloud. Have the other children guess who it is. Once the person has been guessed correctly read the scripture story.

To go along with the outline: After telling the story, review it with the children. Toss a bean bag or a small ball (you could even toss a ‘smartie’ and call them ‘scripture smarties’) to one child and ask him or her to say one thing about the story. Have the child toss the ball/bean bag back to you.

Continue until all the popsicles sticks have been chosen.

Share your testimony about the Atonement.

Sharing Time Idea from the 2015 Outline

Introduce the doctrine:Write the third article of faith on the board and invite the children to repeat it with you a few times. Briefly explain any words the children do not understand. (For example, the Atonement is what Jesus did to make it possible for us to repent and return to God.) Erase one or two words and say it together again. Repeat to help the children memorize it.

Encourage understanding:Tell the following story and invite the children to stand and act it out with you. “A man was walking along a road (walk in place). He fell into a deep hole (sit down). He tried and tried but could not get out (pretend to try to get out). He called for help (quietly call for help). Another man was walking on the same road. He heard the man cry for help (quietly cry for help again). He lowered a ladder down into the hole. The man climbed the ladder out of the hole (pretend to climb up a ladder). The man was saved.” Discuss how the man might have felt when he was in the hole and then when he was rescued. Tell the children that when we do wrong or sin, it is like falling into a deep hole that we cannot get out of by ourselves. Show a picture of Jesus and tell the children that just as someone helped the man out of the hole, Jesus Christ can help and save us so that we can return to live with our Heavenly Father again.

Sharing Time Idea from Little LDS Ideas
I decided to split the idea in the outline into 2 separate posts, one for this week and one for next week (I will post in the next day or so). Here is my idea for the first half for this week. Enjoy!


Begin your Sharing Time by telling the children the story from the outline (man falling into the hole). Ask the children how the man felt when he was in the hole and how he felt when he was rescued


Show the children a poster/sign of the 3rd Article of Faith and read it together.
Explain that when we do wrong/sin, it is like falling into a deep hole that we cannot get out by ourselves.

Forgiving Feet

Object Lesson:

At the front of the room have several pairs of shoes. Inside each of the shoes place some small pebbles. On the toe of each shoe have a scenario

          Example: Your Mother asked you to take out the garbage. You didn’t want to, so you ignored her. She asked you again and you yelled at her.
Invite a child up to the front and have them pick a pair of shoes. Have the child put the shoes on and walk around a little bit. Ask them how the shoes feel. They may say it hurts and isn’t very comfortable. Explain that when we make a mistake or sin it’s like the pebble in the shoe. Next, read the scenario aloud.

After you have read the scenario ask the child if there is someone that could help us remove the pebble/repent and be forgiven of our sin.

Show a picture of Jesus Christ. Just like the man in the story that helped the other man out of the hole in the story we heard before, Jesus Christ can help and save us so that we can return to live with our Heavenly Father again.

Have them remove the pebble, and explain that repenting and receiving Heavenly Father’s forgiveness is like removing the pebble from our shoe.  Explain that because of Jesus Christ, we can repent and receive forgiveness of our sins. 

Another Idea:
Instead of having several pairs of shoes just have one pair of shoes at the front of the room. Invite a child up to the front and have them put the shoes on (this time without pebbles). Have them share how the shoes feel.
Then have them take the shoes off and share a scenario of a time that they did wrong and add a few pebbles into the shoes. Have the child put the shoes on and walk around and share how it feels. Then have them take the shoes off again.
Once again share another scenario and add a few more pebbles.
Repeat as many times as you would like.

After you have shared several scenarios ask the child(ren) how or who can help get the ‘pebbles’ out of your shoes. Show the picture of Christ and explain that through Jesus Christ we are able to repent and be forgiven.
Have an empty jar and have the child pour the pebbles into it.

Show the children the jar of pebbles from the shoes. Bear testimony of the importance of the atonement and repentance. Tell the children if they don’t want to walk around with pebbles in their shoes, then they need to remember to repent.
