Christmas Ideas for Seminary

  • 2017 Mutual Theme Bracelet

Below are some ideas teachers have shared for your Seminary class at Christmas-time.

“real” Lamination - Downloaded from: http://primarynotes29.blogspot.com/2014/02/real-lamination.html So, for over a year I was doing what I call “faux lamination” and using packing tape to cover my items. It worked, and is a viable option when you don’t have access to a laminator. But guess what I got for Christmas?  A home laminator!!!  Guilty confession… I love it! Free […]
{Sharing Time} December 2014: The Son of God was Born on Earth -
Sharing Time Idea from 2014 Outline

IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE:Ask the children: “Have you ever waited for something special to happen? Did it seem like a long time to wait? How did you feel when it finally happened?” Give the children an opportunity to share the feelings they had. Explain that since the time of Adam and Eve, our Father in Heaven promised that a very important event would take place. Righteous people looked forward anxiously to this event. Softly whisper to a small group of children, “The Son of God was born on earth.” Have them whisper the sentence to the other children, and then ask all of the children to whisper it together.

ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING(sharing a story and singing a song): Ask the children to share what they know about Jesus’s birth (see Luke 2:1–20). Fill in the story with details the children don’t mention. Sing “Stars Were Gleaming” (CS, 37), and invite the children to imagine what the shepherds felt when they heard the angels sing. Encourage application (making a Christmas card): Give each child a piece of paper and a pencil or crayons. Help them fold the paper like a greeting card. Invite them to make a Christmas card for their family by drawing pictures of the birth of Jesus Christ. On the front, have them write “The Son of God Was Born on Earth.”

Sharing Time Idea from Little LDS Ideas

I have used this idea for Sharing Time, FHE, Christmas Eve lesson...and the children always enjoy it.

{Sharing Time} December 2014: The Son of God was Born on Earth

You will need a nativity set (the Fisher Price ones are great for this) or use a ‘build your own’ picture of a nativity. You can find a great one on Green Jell-o with Carrots, found HERE (they have a few different ones, so look around).

Begin by doing the Identify Doctrine activity.

Ask the children: “Have you ever waited for something special to happen? Did it seem like a long time to wait? How did you feel when it finally happened?” Give the children an opportunity to share the feelings they had. Explain that since the time of Adam and Eve, our Father in Heaven promised that a very important event would take place. Righteous people looked forward anxiously to this event. Softly whisper to a small group of children, “The Son of God was born on earth.” Have them whisper the sentence to the other children, and then ask all of the children to whisper it together.

During this time of year we give and receive gifts, hear wonderful music, see a man in a big red suit with his little reindeer, etc., etc.....but Christmas is actually a very special time. Tell them that we were given a great gift and that is why we celebrate Christmas.

Show the children the stable, and tell them that today they are going to learn about the Birth of Jesus Christ. Have the children repeat:

“The Son of God Was Born on Earth.”

There are different ways you can do this activity.

1.    Have the stable on a table at the front of the room, and the remaining pieces in a bag or another container, to the side. As you read the story from Luke, invite a child up to find the piece that was read in that verse.

At the end you will have every piece of your nativity set up.

2.    Place each piece of the nativity inside of a box and tie a bow around the box. Then add a number to each box. Just make sure you number the boxes correctly. You will want them numbered in the order they appear in the scripture. Begin reading verse by verse. When you are about to read about box #1 invite the child who has #1 to open the box. As you read the scripture (or another child read) invite the child to come to the front and have them add their piece to the nativity.

3.    You could also have the scripture reference along with the piece wrapped inside of a box. Number the boxes. Begin by choosing a child to come to the front and pick box #1. Have them open the box and find the scripture reference. Have them read it aloud, and then show the piece to everyone. Have them add the piece to the nativity.

4.    You could combine Singing Time & Sharing Time by doing the activity this way: Have your nativity set wrapped into individual boxes. Begin with box #1 (have the nativity piece and the scripture inside the box). Tell the children that they will sing the song and pass the gift around. When the music stops they must stop passing the gift. Whoever is holding the gift when the music stops, will get to open the gift.

Invite the child to the front of the room to open the gift. Have them read the scripture and then show the piece to everyone. Then have them add it to the nativity.

5.    Baby Jesus: You could leave Jesus for the very last. Have the last child open the gift with baby Jesus inside. You could then explain WHY Jesus is our greatest gift. Using the pictures from the Gospel Art Kit you could quickly go through some of the major events during Christ’s life. Explain to the children that Jesus was sent to Earth and that He was sent here for us.

And that's it! I hope you enjoy the ideas I have shared for this week.
I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas.
Thanks for stopping by!

10,000 visitors? - AWStats says Mormon Share had over 10,000 visitors on Saturday, and nearly 8,000 on Sunday. I’m a little suspicious of those results. 2011 Mutual Theme Subway Art -

I wanted something special to give our young women at our Christmas lesson. Each year we give them something that reflects the next year’s mutual theme. The 2011 mutual theme is the 13th Article of Faith so I thought it would be really cool to go with the latest craze and turn the key words […]

Christmas Visitors -
Christmas Visitors
I'm so excited about our plans for Primary next week. We are welcoming some special visitors for a combined Sharing Time and Singing Time. We will hear from wise men, the inn keeper, shepherds, angels and Mary as they share their experience surrounding the Savior's birth. Each person will provide their own simple costume and share a 1 - 2 minute narrative of who they are, what they did and how they felt about their experience with the Savior's birth. Some will sing songs and sometimes we will sing with them.

I think this has the potential to be a powerful experience for the kids especially if the visitors allow it to be a little personal and share their feelings. I've been amazed so far at how willing the adults are to participate!

We'll have only one visitor (or group of visitors) at a time and the visitors will move in and out of the room during the transition songs the children sing.  Here's my agenda:

Wise Men –

Children          See the Joy  CD
Inn Keeper –
Children          Away in a Manger p. 42
Angels –        One angel explains and then a heavenly host joins to sing: Joy to the World  hymn #201  (children join in on chorus)
Children       Picture a Christmas  p. 50
Shepherd –    The First Noel  hymn # 213  (Children join in on chorus)
Children          Stars Were Gleaming  p. 37
Mary –          Mary’s Lullaby  p. 44
Children          Could I Hold the Baby sheet music

Merry Christmas!
Come Let Us Adore Him: Advent Calendar - This Advent Calendar first appeared in the December 1989 New Era. I have resurrected it, so to speak, and created a new document that could be used by Home/Visit Teachers, families, youth leaders, Priesthood, Relief Society or Seminary instructors. This is a very cool calendar. It doesn’t have the little doors that we often associate […]
Could I Hold the Baby? - I have fallen in love with this sweet Christmas song, "Could I Hold the Baby?" written by Rachel Mecham Goates. I heard about it on the Yahoo Group "Primusic" a year or two ago and although I can't verify this information, I read that the song was a ru...

Dreaded Thirteens - I’m really not the superstitious type, but wow, twenty thirteen has proved a bad year for us.  Also age thirteen was a bad one for our son, though I suppose that’s to be expected: ah, middle school.  But wow, this has been a lame few months.  I’m just plain tired. Primary Talks Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ strengthens me and my family - Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding (Prov. 2:5). Families Are Forever – Primary 2014 Theme - I'm sitting near my Christmas tree, sighing with happiness, but wondering why I haven't put up any Christmas printables on this blog this year...I guess Thanksgiving got the best of me! I was so blessed to be able to spend the holiday weekend with my family, especially my husband. He has been so overwhelmed with school and work this semester, so it was an amazing break for both of us and I soaked up every possible minute by his side. (You can check out last year's Christmas printables by clicking here.) I do hope to get at least one or two Christmas quotes up, but we'll have to see...time is running short!

Interestingly enough, I have gotten numerous requests for me to do a print of next year's Primary theme, so I thought I'd take a whack at it. I love the theme of "Families are Forever" because I love the testimony I have of my family being together for eternity. It is the only thing that keeps me going on the hard days and through the trials. I know my family will be my family forever, and it brings me immense peace.

During this Christmas season, I am especially grateful for my Savior and His plan of mercy that allows our families to be sealed in the temple and to remain a unit after this life. He is so kind and so loving and I feel blessed to worship Him and celebrate His birth.

There are 3 color versions available of this print, and one set has "Primary 2014" and the other set has a blank ribbon. Feel free to use whichever works best for your Primary or your family. I hope you like them!

Happy Holidays!

What experiences have you had that have strengthened your testimony of a forever family?

I love to offer my LDS Printables free of charge, but I can only offer so much of my time for free. I try to put generic files up on my site so that most people can use them without needing modifications. Having said that, if you would like to have a print customized with a different temple, names, labels (ie. Primary President, Primary Secretary, etc.), or different colors, you can check out this listing here on my Etsy shop for details. I will only charge for the time I spend on your requests. Lesson 30/Manual 1 -

So many fun things to do with this lesson. I got some great ideas from Sugardoodle, some of my favorites are:

First was this great handout idea about doing all you "can".
She made a label and attached it to a soup can. I would take it one step further and make that can into a treat can. I've done these cans before as a Visiting teaching treat for my ladies.
here is the can I made
Lesson 30/Manual 1
and here's where I learned to do them.
What you do is cut off the bottom of the can and empty and clean it out then refill it with treats and reseal the bottom back on. Be sure to use pop top cans and for the lesson I would find the small cans, like lunch snack size.
The label from Sugardoodle read:
Do all the GOOD you can
By all the MEANS you can
In all the WAYS you can
To all the PEOPLE you can
At all the TIMES you can
For as LONG as you can

Helping comes in CANS not in CAN’TS
May your cupboard be filled with CANS!!

* Updated 7/26/12~ I've created a can label that should fit the small fruit cans. If it's too big just trim to fit, too small and you can back it with a solid paper first.
Lesson 30/Manual 1

you can download it here
* update~ I've added a new label because the white writing is too hard to see when you print them out.

I also found a great little story about service from This 'n' That
The story goes:
One day a man said to God, “God, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like.

God showed the man two doors. Inside the first one, in the middle of the room, was a large round table with a large pot of stew. It smelled delicious and made the man’s mouth water, but the people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths.

The man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering. God said, "You have seen Hell."

Behind the second door, the room appeared exactly the same. There was the large round table with the large pot of wonderful stew that made the man's mouth water. The people had the same long-handled spoons, but they were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking.

The man said, "I don't understand."

God smiled. “It is simple,” He said, “Love only requires one skill. These people learned early to feed one another. Those who are hungry are greedy people, and they think only of themselves.

It would be cute to attach this little parable to a cute wooden spoon. I found some ideas for decorating a wooden spoon.

Tape off the handle and paint stripes
Lesson 30/Manual 1

Just dip the handles in bright colors.
Lesson 30/Manual 1

you could also use some ribbon and twirl it around the handle. This is a spoon I made for a Christmas treat and you could see that you could attach the story and maybe a little treat.
Lesson 30/Manual 1

A great object lesson on how we give our service, is it with a grudge or with a smile?

Lesson 30/Manual 1

Display nice cake. Ask who would like a piece. Sometimes no one will take a piece as they smell a rat! I'll then cut a nice piece for one of the leaders - given on the china with a nice napkin and fork. They usually tell me how tasty it is and then the girls all want a piece. I then slash a hunk of cake off ;and toss it in the paper napkin squishing it a bit and handing it over without a smile. The object is how it's how we serve not what we serve. The cake is the same cake but tasted so much better when served in a kind thoughtful, manner.

I've actually seen this done and it leaves a big impact.

There was also this great idea of leaving a calling card after you've done an act of service.
I've made up a card you can print out and give a few to the girls to leave behind after they've done a good deed.
Lesson 30/Manual 1

you can download this card here

I also have found some great sites with ideas for service.

This one has 52 great ideas. I would print out the list and give it to the girls with the sneaky service calling cards.
Lesson 30/Manual 1

This one was more geared toward Christmas time but you could adapt some of her ideas
Lesson 30/Manual 1

I always like to break up the lesson a bit with a video so they can hear someone else testify to what it is I'm trying to teach. This is a great video by Pres. Monson that I would use.

Definitely read the additional resources on the side bar of the lesson, so many good talks to take from.

Hope I was helpful and please don't feel you need to do it all just take what works for you.

Have a wonderful lesson!

*if you have trouble downloading my printables please email me at the email address on my sidebar and I would be happy to get them to you directly. : )

Lesson Plans: November 2014 - -To go with the week 1 theme of faith, teach the song "Faith"
-The Sharing Time plan for the first week involves teaching the story of Samuel the Lamanite.  Reinforce this message and get a jump on Christmas by teaching "Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus."
-The second week Sharing Time theme is "Prayer is reverent communication with Heavenly Father."  Explain what reverence means by teaching "Reverence is Love" or teach about Prayer by reviewing the songs "A Child's Prayer" or "Children All Over the World."
-Review types of prayer with this activity.
-During Sharing Time on the third week, children will learn the story of the Anti-Nephi-Lehis (Ammonites).  Continue this story by talking about the Stripling Warriors.  Then teach a song which mentions them, such as "Holding Hands Around the World," "I am a Stripling Warrior," or "We'll Bring the World His Truth."

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

I don't know about you, but I am getting into the Christmas spirit.  And with only a few weeks left in the year, I'm sure some of you are into Christmas songs full-swing.  If not, don't stress!  It's never too late to teach a new song for the holidays!  I LOVE this song that was published in The Friend a couple of years ago.  It's catchy, they lyrics are simple, and you can teach it really easily with the flip chart or just a few props (or combine the chart with props, which is what I would do.  But that's just me!).

Here is the sheet music.
Here is the flip chart.

Here are a few things you could use:

Box labeled "Ornaments" - keep all of your items in the box, to stay organized!
Small Christmas tree (to place the ornaments on, of course)
Candy cane
Picture of shepherds (p. 4 in flip chart)
Angel tree topper
Silver star (if you don't have one, just cover a cardboard star with foil)
Picture of star of Bethlehem (p. 8 in flip chart)
Package wrapped in red paper
Picture of Savior
Evergreen sprig or bough (pass around so they can feel and smell it)
Jesus in the manger piece from a nativity scene

This may not be the most appropriate song for a Sacrament Meeting number, but it is a great one for the kids to learn to connect a few secular symbols with gospel meaning, especially tying into the Savior.  Let me know how it goes!

What songs are you teaching for Christmas?  Any fun plans?
