  • {Sharing Time} Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ Love Me -
    ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING: Have the pianist play the first two notes of a song that teaches about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ’s love for us, and have the children guess the song. Add one note at a time until the children guess correctly. Sing the song together and then discuss what the song teaches about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ’s love for us. List the children’s ideas on the board. Repeat with each song. Consider using the following songs: “My Heavenly Father Loves Me” (CS, 228–29), “Thanks to Our Father” (CS, 20), “I Feel My Savior’s Love” (CS, 74–75), and “I Am a Child of God” (CS, 2–3).


    ENCOURAGE APPLICATION: Give each child a piece of paper and have them draw one way they know that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love them. You may want to refer the children to the ideas you listed on the board in the activity above. Tape the pictures together, and display them in a roller box (see TNGC, 178–79) or unroll them as you would a scroll. As the children watch, have the pianist play one of the songs listed above.


    ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING AND APPLICATION: Write some examples of ways that Heavenly Father shows His love for us and ways we show our love for Him on separate pieces of paper. Put the pieces of paper in a container, and have a child pull them out one at a time. Read each one aloud. If it is something that shows Heavenly Father’s love for us, have the children stretch one arm upward. If it shows our love for Heavenly Father, have them put their hands over their heart.

    I am sharing some fun ideas that you can use over the next 2 weeks for Sharing Time. I used a great idea from this month's Friend as one of the activities. To read the whole article click HERE.

    {Sharing Time} Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ Love Me

    Before Primary cut out a large heart. You can leave the heart as is or you can write:

    ‘How do you know Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love you?’

    Just like the ‘Encourage Understanding’ in the outline, pick a song and have the pianist play the first few notes of the song. Keep adding notes until a child guesses what the song is.

    Explain to the children that there are many songs that teach us about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ’s love for us.


    Show the children the heart that you have cut out and tell them that you are going to play ‘Hot & Cold’. One child will go out of the room while another child hides the heart.

    The child that is out of the room will come into the room. The remaining children will begin singing a song (preferably the one you played at the beginning). As the child gets closer to the heart have the children sing louder and as they move further from the heart have them sing quietly.


    Once the child finds the heart have them share a way that they know Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ love them.

    Write the answer on the board and then pick a new child to hunt for a heart.


    Another Idea:

    You could cut out several hearts and leave them blank. As the children answer how they know Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ love them, write the answer on the heart. String the hearts onto a ribbon or string to make a heart banner. After all the children have had a turn, hang up the hearts somewhere in the Primary room for all the children to see.


    Remind the children that our Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ love them very much.


    Encourage Understanding & Application

    I was looking through this month’s Friend and saw an idea that would be great for this section of the Sharing Time Outline. You could do the above idea for the 3rd week and save this idea for the 4th week.


    Write 4-5 examples of ways that Heavenly Father shows His love for us and ways we show our love for Him on separate pieces of paper.

    Create a Punch-A-Box {picture below} and place each piece of paper inside the cups of the punch-a-box. Click HERE to read how to make a Punch-A-Box.

    Invite a child up to the front and have them punch a box and read the slip of paper aloud.

    If it is something that shows Heavenly Father’s love for us, have the children stretch one arm upward. If it shows our love for Heavenly Father, have them put their hands over their heart.


    Helping Hands
    Explain to the children that when Jesus was on the earth, He loved and served everyone. We

    can follow His example today and show our love for Jesus by serving others.


    In this month’s Friend they had a challenge for all the children. They are collecting ‘helping hands’ and are asking all the children to help them out. Here is what it says in The Friend:


    “How many helping hands can we collect this year? Do

    a good deed and help us find out!

    1.   Trace your hand on a piece of paper and cut it out.


    2. Write about how you followed Jesus by serving someone—or

    about how someone served you. It can be something big or small.”


    Explain to the children that today they are going to make some helping hands and send them to The Friend.


    You will need pieces of paper and crayons/markers for each child...and some adult helpers. :)


    Have the children trace their hands and write some service that they have done.

    Once everyone is finished have a few children share what their helping hand says.


    Remind the children that our Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ love us and that we can show our love for them by serving others.

    So to solve these issues and to learn each child’s name we have decided to use ‘Helper Sticks’.

    Supplies Needed:
    - White Full Sheet Sticker Paper
    (I found mine at my local Office Store, but you can also find it on Amazon).
    -Jumbo Popsicle Sticks
    - Scissors (I used my Silhouette to do the cutting)
    - Marker
    - Jar or Small Can

    {Primary} Primary Helper Sticks

    As I said above, I used my Silhouette Cutter to cut out my labels. I created the labels using the Silhouette software, printed them out onto the sticker paper and then had the machine cut them. 

    If you don't have a Silhouette, no worries!

    First you will need to create what you want your labels to look like OR
    you can use the ones I created.
    Click on the link below to download and print out my Popsicle Stick labels. They will look exactly like the ones pictured above, but the name box is blank. I did leave the 'visitor' one as is.

    {There are 14 labels per sheet}

    Once you have printed out all the labels that you need your next job will be to cut them out.
    Using scissors, cut around each label. Cut, Cut, Cut, until all labels are done.

    Now, get your popsicle sticks and apply each of the stickers onto the sticks. 

    {Primary} Primary Helper Sticks

    After each of the stickers are on the sticks get a marker and label each stick with each of the children's names.

    Finally, get a jar or a cute container and place your fun 'Helper Sticks' inside!
    We have 2 buckets for our Primary. We use one as a 'Pick Me' and then the other is for 'Already Picked'. This helps us to know that everyone has had a turn. It may not happen in one week, but by having the 2 buckets we can know who was picked as a helper last week and be able to pick those that might not have helped.

    Sharing Time Idea from 2014 Outline

    IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE:Ask the children: “Have you ever waited for something special to happen? Did it seem like a long time to wait? How did you feel when it finally happened?” Give the children an opportunity to share the feelings they had. Explain that since the time of Adam and Eve, our Father in Heaven promised that a very important event would take place. Righteous people looked forward anxiously to this event. Softly whisper to a small group of children, “The Son of God was born on earth.” Have them whisper the sentence to the other children, and then ask all of the children to whisper it together.


    ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING(sharing a story and singing a song): Ask the children to share what they know about Jesus’s birth (see Luke 2:1–20). Fill in the story with details the children don’t mention. Sing “Stars Were Gleaming” (CS, 37), and invite the children to imagine what the shepherds felt when they heard the angels sing. Encourage application (making a Christmas card): Give each child a piece of paper and a pencil or crayons. Help them fold the paper like a greeting card. Invite them to make a Christmas card for their family by drawing pictures of the birth of Jesus Christ. On the front, have them write “The Son of God Was Born on Earth.”


    Sharing Time Idea from Little LDS Ideas

    I have used this idea for Sharing Time, FHE, Christmas Eve lesson...and the children always enjoy it.



    {Sharing Time} December 2014: The Son of God was Born on Earth

    You will need a nativity set (the Fisher Price ones are great for this) or use a ‘build your own’ picture of a nativity. You can find a great one on Green Jell-o with Carrots, found HERE (they have a few different ones, so look around).


    Begin by doing the Identify Doctrine activity.

    Ask the children: “Have you ever waited for something special to happen? Did it seem like a long time to wait? How did you feel when it finally happened?” Give the children an opportunity to share the feelings they had. Explain that since the time of Adam and Eve, our Father in Heaven promised that a very important event would take place. Righteous people looked forward anxiously to this event. Softly whisper to a small group of children, “The Son of God was born on earth.” Have them whisper the sentence to the other children, and then ask all of the children to whisper it together.

    During this time of year we give and receive gifts, hear wonderful music, see a man in a big red suit with his little reindeer, etc., etc.....but Christmas is actually a very special time. Tell them that we were given a great gift and that is why we celebrate Christmas.

    Show the children the stable, and tell them that today they are going to learn about the Birth of Jesus Christ. Have the children repeat:

    “The Son of God Was Born on Earth.”


    There are different ways you can do this activity.


    1.    Have the stable on a table at the front of the room, and the remaining pieces in a bag or another container, to the side. As you read the story from Luke, invite a child up to find the piece that was read in that verse.

    At the end you will have every piece of your nativity set up.


    2.    Place each piece of the nativity inside of a box and tie a bow around the box. Then add a number to each box. Just make sure you number the boxes correctly. You will want them numbered in the order they appear in the scripture. Begin reading verse by verse. When you are about to read about box #1 invite the child who has #1 to open the box. As you read the scripture (or another child read) invite the child to come to the front and have them add their piece to the nativity.


    3.    You could also have the scripture reference along with the piece wrapped inside of a box. Number the boxes. Begin by choosing a child to come to the front and pick box #1. Have them open the box and find the scripture reference. Have them read it aloud, and then show the piece to everyone. Have them add the piece to the nativity.


    4.    You could combine Singing Time & Sharing Time by doing the activity this way: Have your nativity set wrapped into individual boxes. Begin with box #1 (have the nativity piece and the scripture inside the box). Tell the children that they will sing the song and pass the gift around. When the music stops they must stop passing the gift. Whoever is holding the gift when the music stops, will get to open the gift.

    Invite the child to the front of the room to open the gift. Have them read the scripture and then show the piece to everyone. Then have them add it to the nativity.


    5.    Baby Jesus: You could leave Jesus for the very last. Have the last child open the gift with baby Jesus inside. You could then explain WHY Jesus is our greatest gift. Using the pictures from the Gospel Art Kit you could quickly go through some of the major events during Christ’s life. Explain to the children that Jesus was sent to Earth and that He was sent here for us.

Invite the children to think of songs that help them remember Jesus Christ. Sing a few of these songs together. Following each song, have a child remove a piece of paper from the picture. Repeat until all the pieces are removed. Discuss how the children in the picture may have made right choices following their experience with Jesus. Remind the children that when they remember Jesus they will want to choose the right. Ask them to name some things they can do to remember Jesus in their daily activities.

Explain that the people were able to choose the right because they remembered something very special.

    Have a small box wrapped like a gift. Explain to the children that the people in the scriptures remembered something very special. That very special something isn’t something that you can buy at a store. The special something is a gift from our Heavenly Father and He gave this special gift to the whole world. The gift was His own Son, Jesus Christ, who came to the earth to be our Savior.

    Jesus showed us the way to live so that we can return to our Heavenly Father.

    Invite the children to say together, 
    “Remembering Jesus Christ helps me choose the right.


    Before Primary get some other small boxes that you can use as gifts.

    You will also need to make a copy or print out a picture of Christ blessing the Nephite children. Cut the picture into several puzzle pieces.


     In each of the small gifts place a puzzle piece. You could also include a piece of paper with a question. Some of the pieces of paper could say:

    “Pick a song that reminds you of Jesus Christ.”

    or

    “What can you do to remember Jesus Christ daily?”

    or

    Come up with some scenarios


    Place the items in each of the boxes and wrap them like a gift.

    For your Sharing Time, place each of the gifts on a table at the front of the room. Invite a child up to the front and have them pick a gift. Have the child unwrap the gift to reveal the puzzle piece. Have them place the puzzle piece where they think it goes (you could have them do this on a chalkboard or bulletin board). Then ask them the question that is in the box. If it’s a song have the children sing the song, if it’s a question have them answer the question. Then continue with the next gift.


    After all the gifts have been opened and the puzzle is all put together discuss how the children in the picture may have made right choices following their experience with Jesus.

    Remind the children that when they remember Jesus they will want to choose the right. Ask a few children to name some things they can do to remember Jesus in their daily activities.


    Encourage the children to think of Jesus often throughout their daily activities. You could even ask them to think of something that they will do. Have them write it down and tell them that that can be their gift to Jesus Christ.

    ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING(matching scriptures with pictures): Write the following scripture references on the board:
    Around the room, place pictures depicting the events described in the scriptures (GAB 30, 47, 56, 57, and 59). Tell the children that the sacrament is a time to remember how much Jesus Christ loves us and all that He did for us. Ask a child to read one of the scriptures. Ask another child to choose a related picture and bring it to the front of the room. Repeat with the other scriptures.


    ENCOURAGE APPLICATION(playing a memory game): Place on a table items such as a picture of Christ in Gethsemane, a picture of the Last Supper, a piece of bread, a sacrament cup, sacrament trays, scriptures, and a hymnbook. Invite the children to briefly look at the items, and then cover them. Ask the children to work in groups to write down the items they remember seeing. Let the children explain how each item can help them remember Jesus Christ during the sacrament.



    Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

    I love the idea given in the outline. It’s simple, but something the children will enjoy. I’m not going to share anything too fantastic today...just another option for the ‘Encourage Understanding’ and the 'Encourage Application' sections. Enjoy!


    Sacrament Punch

    In the outline the children will hear different scriptures and then pick which picture belongs to that picture. For this I thought it would be fun to bring in the good ol’ Punch-a-Box!


    {Sharing Time} The Sacrament is a Time to Remember Jesus Christ.

    I have come a long way from the original Punch-A-Box I first created...the Punch-A-Boxes I now use are simple (which is wonderful!).

    Using a foam board, hot glue the number of plastic cups needed.
    For this idea you will need 5 cups. You could throw in a few extra cups and add some scenarios of different types of behavior during Sacrament. You could have the children do a ‘thumbs up’ for ways we should act during Sacrament or a ‘thumbs down’ for irreverent behavior.

    Ex: I was teasing my sister during Sacrament (thumbs down).
    I read The Friend during Sacrament (thumbs up).

    Now, on pieces of paper type/write the scripture references listed above. If you decide to add some scenarios be sure to type/write those onto pieces of paper as well.


    Once your cups are glued to your foam board, place each of your pieces of paper inside of a cup.


    {Sharing Time} The Sacrament is a Time to Remember Jesus Christ.


    Next, get some tissue paper and cut large square pieces (just make sure they’re large enough to fit over the mouth of the cup). Get a rubber-band and place the rubber-band around the tissue paper and the mouth of the cup.


    To Play!

    Around the room, place pictures depicting the events described in the scriptures (GAB 30, 47, 56, 57, and 59). Tell the children that the sacrament is a time to remember how much Jesus Christ loves us and all that He did for us.

    Show the children your Punch-A-Box and explain that today they are going to be playing ‘Sacrament Punch’. Tell the children that inside each of these cups are different scriptures references. Show them the pictures around the room (or you can have them posted on a chalkboard) and explain that each scripture matches one of the pictures.

    The children will take turns coming to the front to ‘punch’ & retrieve a scripture. The scripture will be read aloud and then the child will have to decide which picture it belongs to.


    I created some little tags that you could have the child place on the picture that they pick after they have read their scripture.

    Here is what they look like:

    Sacrament I Spy
    Here’s another option for the ‘Encourage Application’ idea. It’s very similar but with just a little change. Hope you like it.


    Place several different items on a table such as:


    a Picture of Christ in Gethsemane

    a Picture of the Last Supper

    a Piece of Bread

    a Sacrament Cup

    Sacrament Trays

    Scriptures

    a Hymnbook

    Have the items covered with a towel or small blanket. Explain to the children that underneath the blanket are different items that we might see/use during the Sacrament.

    Explain that you are going to invite one child up (you could even invite 2-3) to the front. You will uncover the items on the table for 15-20 seconds and let them look at the items. Then you will cover the items again and remove one item. You will then uncover the items once again for a short amount of time and see if they can guess which item is missing.

    Once they have guessed which item is missing show the item to the other Primary children. Then invite the child to explain how that particular item can help them remember Jesus Christ during the Sacrament.


    These are simple ideas, but they are fun and will help the children to learn the importance of the Sacrament and hopefully help them to learn that Sacrament is a time to remember Jesus Christ.

Ask the child to walk around. Discuss how hanging on to bad feelings will drag us down. Explain that when we forgive people who hurt us, we let those bad feelings go. Let the child untie the sock. Ask the children to say, “Forgiveness brings peace.”


    Encourage understanding(hearing scripture stories): Several days in advance, ask leaders or teachers to be prepared to share one of the following scripture stories about forgiveness:


    1. Jesus forgives on the cross (see Luke 23:13–34).

    2. Nephi forgives his brothers (see 1 Nephi 7:6–21).

    3. Joseph forgives his brothers (see Genesis 37; 41–45).

    Divide the children into three groups. Send each group to a different part of the room (see “Stations,” TNGC, 179), where a leader or teacher will briefly discuss the scripture story he or she prepared to share. After each group has visited each station, sing the first verse of “Help Me, Dear Father” (CS, 99).

    First you will need to Print out a 'Tom' (printable found HERE) and cut out some feathers. I just used some scrapbook paper and cut out some feathers.

    On each of Tom's feathers write one of the scripture stories from the scripture references given in the outline. If you have more than 3 feathers you could write down different scripture references that talk about forgiveness and/or scenarios that the children can answer what they would do in that situation:

    “Your brother called you a name and it really hurt your feelings.”

    “Your friend said that she didn’t like you anymore.”

    Something like that.


    I LOVE the 'Identify the Doctrine' activity found in the outline, so I would use that as your opening. After you have done the activity and discussed forgiveness...show the children ‘Tom’ and tell them that today Tom is going to help during Sharing Time.

    Tell the children that on the back of Tom’s feathers are different scripture stories, scriptures, scenarios, etc. They are going to take turns 'plucking' a feather from Tom and discussing whatever is on the back of each feather.


    A Different Way to Play:

    Who Am I:For this idea you will need to come up with 3-4 clues for each scripture story. Have the clues written/typed on separate pieces of paper.


     The child that ‘plucks’ a feather will be giving the remaining primary children clues to get them to guess who the person is.


    On the back of each feather have one of the names from the scripture stories in the outline (Nephi, Joseph, Jesus Christ). Have the child show you which name they picked and then have them read the clues one at a time. Have the children raise their hand when they think they know who the person is.

    After the children have guessed correctly discuss the scripture story.



    And that's it! Two easy ideas for you to pick from for your Sharing Time this Sunday.

    Sharing Time Idea from the Primary Outline
    IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE(revealing a picture): Prepare word strips with words from the sentence “Repentance is a change of mind and heart” written on each one. Use the word strips to cover a picture of the Anti-Nephi-Lehies burying their weapons. Ask a few children to remove the word strips and place them in the correct order on the board. Ask the children to read the sentence together, using actions to emphasize the words mind and heart.


    ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING(listening to a scripture story): Tell the children that there was a group of people in the Book of Mormon who had a change of heart. Tell the following story (see Alma 24): “Ammon taught a group of Lamanites about the gospel. They had been wicked people, but they believed what Ammon taught them and had a change of heart. They wanted to join the Church, so they repented of their sins, promised they would not fight, and buried their weapons of war. They changed their name to the Anti-Nephi-Lehies and became a hardworking, righteous people.”


    ENCOURAGE APPLICATION (burying “swords” and singing): Give each child a piece of paper. Ask the children to draw a picture of a sword and then write a wrong choice on their swords (such as “fighting with my brother” or “telling a lie”). Ask the children to share ways they can choose the right and then “bury” their swords by crumpling their papers or throwing them away. Sing “Repentance” (CS, 98).

    Begin your Sharing Time using the ideas from the 'Identify the Doctrine' & the 'Encourage Understanding sections of the Primary Outline.

    After you have discussed the story of the Anti-Nephi-Lehies explain to the children that you will be playing 'Will You Bury Your Sword'.

    Download and print my 'Will You Bury Your Sword' matching cards (link below) and attach them to a poster-board, bulletin board, or chalkboard.
    Show the children the cards and explain that on the back of the cards are different 'wrong choice' phrases. The children will take turns flipping over cards to reveal the wrong choices. Once a match is found invite the child to share ways they can choose the right (right the wrong) and then “bury” their swords by crumpling their papers, throwing them away, or have them place them in a box with a hole in the top.

     After all matches have been found, bear your testimony to the children. Invite them to remember the Anti-Nephi-Lehies and remind them that even though we make mistakes we can choose to 'bury our swords' and repent and promise to not do it again.

    I love the ‘Identify the Doctrine’ idea given in the outline. I also thought it might be fun to have the actual objects there hidden in a bag or underneath boxes.

    Invite some children up to the front and ask them to imagine they are far from home and need to communicate with their family. Have them look at the hidden items, and discuss how they help us communicate with others. Talk about the different ways we communicate with each other.

    Explain that when we came to earth, we left our heavenly home, but we can still communicate with our Heavenly Father. Ask the children, “How can we communicate with Heavenly Father?” Show the children several pictures of children and families praying. Explain that each picture shows reverent communication— praying with love and respect—to Heavenly Father. Ask the children to say, “Prayer is reverent communication with Heavenly Father.”


    Today we are going to talk about prayer. Did you know there are certain words that we should use when we pray?

    Today we are going to learn all about them.


    PB&J Prayer Sandwich

     Today I have a great Prayer Sharing Time that the children will enjoy. You will be making a PB & J while talking about prayer. Enjoy!

    {Sharing Time} Prayer is Reverent Communication With Heavenly Father

    Tell the children that today you are going to be making a PB&J Prayer Sandwich.

    Show the children the first piece of bread. Ask them ‘How do we begin our prayers? The first piece of bread is for 'Dear Heavenly Father’.

    Lay the piece of bread on a plate and have everyone repeat ‘Dear Heavenly Father’.

    Now, ask if anyone knows what comes next.


    The Jelly! Use the jelly to represent: 'We Thank Thee.’

    But instead of putting on a lot of jelly just put on a tiny little glob.

    Ask the children if that is enough. They’ll obviously say NO!

    Explain that when we pray we need to remember to thank Heavenly Father for ALL of our many blessings. We want Heavenly Father to know that we appreciate all that He has given to us, so we need to remember to Thank Him.

    To help the children know some things that they can be thankful for I decided to do a little activity.

    I found pictures of several different things that we might be thankful for and printed them out.


    {Sharing Time} Prayer is Reverent Communication With Heavenly Father

    {Thanks Nikki from Melonheadz for your great clipart! I just google searched for the others and there’s a few that aren’t in the picture.}


    I am going to attach them to a poster-board with ‘We Thank Thee’ at the top. I am going to cover up the pictures and tell the children that underneath are pictures of things that we can be thankful for.

    I am going to reveal the pictures for 2-3 seconds and then cover them up again.

    I will then call on a child to see if he/she remembers what one of the pictures was.

    If they name one, I will take it off the poster-board and show it to the children and discuss why we are thankful for that particular item.

    Then I will repeat for a few more pictures. As we talk about each picture I will add more jelly to the sandwich.


    The next step in our PB&J Sandwich is the PB!

     The peanut butter represents: 'We Ask Thee'. I will do the same activity that I did with the Jelly.


    And the last part of our PB&J Prayer sandwich is the piece of bread which represents: 'In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen'.

    You could then close with a song about prayer or a short story from 'The Friend'. Encourage the children to think about what they will say before they pray each day and then bear your testimony.


    I am excited for this Sharing Time. I think it's going to be alot of fun AND it will help the children to learn how to pray.

    Sharing Time Idea from 2014 Sharing Time Outline


    IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE(memorizing a scripture): Write on the board “If ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.” Have the children read it aloud together several times, and then erase all but the first letter of each word. Ask the children to recite it again. Erase the letters one at a time until the children can repeat the scripture from memory.


    ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING(hearing a scripture story): Ask the children to describe how they know when it is nighttime. Show a picture of Samuel the Lamanite and explain that he prophesied that on the night Jesus Christ would be born, the sun would go down but it would not get dark. Invite the children to retell the events from Helaman 16 and 3 Nephi 1:1–13 (you may want to ask a few children in advance to be prepared to share this story). Ask the children to recite the scripture they memorized, and ask them how the Nephite believers showed faith. Ask the children what they think happened to the believers. Invite a child to read 3 Nephi 1:15, 19. Testify of the importance of faith.



    Sharing Time Idea from Little LDS Ideas

    {Here is an idea I have shared before. Read through it and change it up to fit your needs. The beginning is a little long, but the activity would be a great one! Parts of this idea came from The Friend; Jan. 1999; Sharing Time: Faith in Jesus Christ }


    {Sharing Time} “If Ye Have Faith Ye Hope For Things Which Are Not Seen, Which Are True” (Alma 32:21)

    Idea

    What does it mean to have faith? Alma says that “if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true” (Alma 32:21). We have faith when we believe and trust in something that is real and true even though we have not seen it for ourselves.


    What does it mean to have faith in Jesus Christ? To have faith in Jesus Christ means that although we have not seen Him, we believe that He lives and loves us and that we trust Him. When we read the scriptures, we can learn about Him. When we listen to the prophets, we can understand what we can do to follow Him. When we pray in faith for help to choose the right, we can know that our prayers will be answered. When we listen to the whisperings of the Holy Ghost, we can feel Him close to us and know that He loves us.

    Show the children some seeds. Ask the children if anyone knows what they are. Then ask them the 3 questions from the outline: "What can these seeds become?" "How do you know these seeds will grow?" "What must we do to make them grow?" Discuss the seeds and how they grow with the children. Then explain to the children that Faith is like a seed. You could ask the children how Faith is like a seed.


    How does our faith in Jesus Christ grow? Alma tells us that the word of God is like a seed. We show our faith when we plant a seed in the earth. We then nurture it by keeping the weeds away, by giving it water and plant food, and by making sure that it has sunshine. If it is a good seed, it will begin to swell and grow.


    When we believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ, we plant true words of God in our hearts. We nurture this kind of seed by praying, by listening to the prophets, by keeping the commandments, and by responding to the promptings of the Holy Ghost. As we do this, the seed of truth will grow within our hearts. Then we will know that Jesus Christ is happy with our efforts.


    Alma says that if we continue to nourish the word of God by our faith, it will grow as large as a tree and bring forth fruit. This means that our faith in Jesus Christ will grow strong and bring blessings for us and for others. What joy that brings! We have faith in Jesus Christ when we believe Him, trust Him, obey Him, and follow Him.


    Help the children memorize Alma 32:21: “If ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.”

    After the children have memorized the scripture show a picture of Samuel the Lamanite and explain that he prophesied that on the night Jesus Christ would be born, the sun would go down but it would not get dark. Tell the story to the children and discuss it.

      
    Activity

    Assemble some gardening aids (small bag of fertilizer, trowel, watering can, picture of sun, etc.), and put them into a box or bag. Have children pick an item and tell one thing we can do to nurture the word of God by our faith in Jesus Christ (believe, keep the commandments, pray, etc.). Label each item with a word suggested by the child. Display pictures of trees in various stages. Help the children realize that this is an ongoing process.


    **Another idea: you could attach pictures to each gardening tool for Jr. Primary and scripture references for Sr. Primary that talk about the different ways we can nurture/help our seed grow (Prayer, Scriptures, Baptism, etc.). Have the children tell you what the picture is and then discuss how that helps our seed to grow and have the older children find the scripture and read it and then tell you what it is.
