General Conference Traditions and Culture

Here's what some members do during General Conference

Pre-Conference Temple Trip

The Rock Hill Ward in Virginia holds two temple trips each year, each on the Friday evening before General Conference weekend. A few weeks before the event youth leaders collect a list of young men and young women who are able to babysit that weekend. The list is shared with adults in the unit. On the day of the trip, those who are in the area meet at the church building a few hours before the scheduled session to carpool up together to rendezvous with those members who commute into Washington, DC. After the session those who are interested meet at a local restaurant for a late dinner and socializing. Because there are only two of these events each year, the high priest group leader is able to publicize the event very well and member turnout is huge -- there are generally 50 or more members on each temple trip.

Eliminate an Extra Trip to the Church for Broadcasts

- Our branch in Mississippi covered an area of over 5 counties, and many members drove quite some distance to attend meetings only available by satellite. The Philadelphia Branch tapes the General Relief Society and Young Women broadcasts and shows them during the April or October Priesthood meetings. Consequently, husbands and wives make just one trip for their broadcasts. Couple that with a potluck dinner for a great evening.

Male Bonding / Ice Cream

- Many men in our area go out for ice cream after the priesthood session at Carl's Frozen Custard -- what a reward for making the trip to the stake center!

Female Bonding

When I lived in Logan, Utah, women went shopping during the Priesthood session at their local LDS book store. Several others held chick flick parties where women and girls would watch movies and have ice cream sundaes while the men and boys were out.

King Benjamin Tent

Taken from the story in Mosiah 2 about the meeting, some members pitch tents with the opening facing toward the television or radio. Great fun for kids! See the post on Making Conference Memorable at Mormon Momma. One family elaborated on the tent theme by letting the kids decorate boxes to use as "tents" during Family Home Evening.

Rotate 72-hour Kit Food

Check the food in your 72 hour kit during conference to see if it needs to be rotated.

Memorize the names of Apostles

One family uses General Conference time to memorize the names of the 12 Apostles by singing them to the tune of Ten Little Indians. "Monson, Eyring, Uchtdorf, Packer - Perry, Nelson, Oaks and Ballard - Anderson, Scott, Hales, Holland - Christensen, Cook and Bednar."

Scrapbooking / Food / Crafting

Many families like to scrapbook, craft, quilt, or eat special foods during General Conference. You can read about some of them at Segullah and about Cinnamon Rolls at the Low Family. You can get general conference recipes, too! Please share your general conference traditions in the comments section below! Tweeting General Conference

Hundreds of LDS Church members tweet about their experiences during LDS General Conference, including me. Remember, if you tweet conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, include the tag #ldsconf so that others following conference can see your tweets.
