#1 This makes it more difficult
This makes it more difficult than it needs to be. All they need to get is their FIG to get their knot. The knot is basically a patch which says in essence "This boy earned the religious award that his church promotes", because they aren't supposed to wear the religion-specific award on their uniform.
I always wondered what you were supposed to do with those fancy religious medals hanging on the ribbon (FIG or DTG) because you can't wear them on your uniform (that's why they have the knot), and where else do you wear it? Seems like it should be something more like a plaque or similar ... something made to display, not to wear, but I'm not the boss of such matters.
