I am a new CTR 6 Teacher. I am a 59 year old single male and have had very little patience with children.. Over 20 years ago, I taught this same age group and my class consisted of 6 wonderful girls. I loved teaching that class and knew that I had a special class. I learned as much from them as they learned from me.
Now my class consists of 3 boys and 3 girls and I find it to be a huge challenge. Adding boys to the mix makes it a whole new ball game. The three girls are little angels, one of the boys is a 6 year old angel that seems to be very mature and very intelligent for his age. The other two boys are a different story. Neither of them wants to listen or participate in the lesson. They just want to crawl around on the floor and play games and be disruptive.
I can control one of the boys by telling him that I am going to get his Dad. That REALLY gets his attention and his behavior improves greatly (this bothers me because he appears to be very scared). The Mother of Boy 2 has told me to tell him that if he doesn't behave, I will tell his Mother and he won't get a treat after Church. I tried that and it didn't make a difference. In any case, I don't believe I should threaten them. Fear is not a good learning tool. Can anyone give me some tips on how to effectively get them to sit still, listen and participate in the class.
I have tried talking real quiet but that didn't work because the two boys made too much noise for anyone else to hear me unless I talk at a normal volume.
My co-teacher has tried holding the most disruptive boy in his lap and the kid fights to get away to the point of almost damaging my co-teachers clothing.
