While preparing to speak at a CES fireside being held at Brigham Young University’s Marriott Center on February 7, 1993, Hunter was confronted by Cody Judy, who rushed onto the rostrum and threatened Hunter and the audience of 15,000–17,000. Judy carried a briefcase that he claimed contained a bomb and held what appeared to be a detonator-like device. Judy demanded that Hunter read a three-page document that supposedly detailed God’s plan for Judy to lead the church, which Hunter refused to do. The audience spontaneously sang “We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet”, during which students from the audience, and then security personnel, overtook Judy. After Judy was taken away, Hunter delivered his prepared remarks, a talk entitled “An Anchor to the Souls of Men.
I was at the Marriott Center that day. Any one else? Any one that was in Rexburg to share what happened there? Great idea for D&C 28!I remember watching the devotion by satellite in Pennsylvania. Right after Judy started yelling, the screen went blank. A few minutes later the feed came back on as if nothing happened. Of course ‘back in the day’ we had to wait several days before one of us figured out word of mouth what had happened. Crazy….1I was in Rexburg that day. We were watching the broadcast. There was background noise like shouting and President Hunter’s eyes shifted to his side like he was seeing something. Then the screen just went black. My husband and I both remember the congregation singing We Thank Thee Oh God for a Prophet. I think we sang more than that. We had no idea what was occurring in Provo but we stayed. We did find out the next morning but you knew SOMETHING occurred. It was actually a testimony builder because I remember the student response in provo and rexburg being the same or very similar. For President Hunter to deliver his message cooly was a marvel indeed.1
