Great And Abominable Church 1 Nephi 12-13

As a child I loved to watch Rudolph on TV. The Abominable snowman scared me to death! The thought of running into him terrified me.

Jump ahead a few years and when I first heard the phrase: “Great and Abominable Church” I had visions of something terrifying. Something that would prevent me from getting back to my Heavenly Father.

1 Nephi 13: 1-4,6 Nephi saw a group forming the latter-day Gentiles. This group was designed to take men off course. Keeping them from salvation. Satan is the great mastermind behind this group.

Elder Bruce R. McConkie of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said: “The titles church of the devil and great and abominable church are used to identify all … organizations of whatever name or nature—whether political, philosophical, educational, economic, social, fraternal, civic, or religious—which are designed to take men on a course that leads away from God and his laws and thus from salvation in the kingdom of God” (Mormon Doctrine,2nd ed. [1966], 137–38).The Lord has ensured that His work will go forward in spite of efforts by the great and abominable church.

1 Nephi 13:12: talks about Columbus coming to America
1 Nephi 13:13 tells us that the Pilgrims sailed to America seeking religious freedom
1 Nephi 13:14 Native Americans are driven from their lands
1 Nephi 13:15 Gentiles prosper in America
1 Nephi 13:16-19 Although outnumbered by mother England, American revolutionary armies are victorious!

1 Nephi 13:20-24 Nephi saw that the early American colonists carried a book with them.
This book had many plain and precious things removed from it. 1 Nephi 13:29

Again in his wisdom and love for each of us, The Lord brought forth other books in the latter days. These books would restore the plain and precious truths that were lost:

The Book of Mormon
The Doctrine and Covenants
The Pearl of Great Price
The Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible
